Steelers Had Monday Meeting With FSU Draft Prospects WR Kelvin Benjamin And RB Devonta Freeman

The Pittsburgh Steelers had a lot of representation at the Tuesday Florida State Pro Day and they reportedly spent a lot of time with two offensive players while there.

According to FSU running back Devonta Freeman, he and wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin had a great business meeting/dinner Monday night with Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert, head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

The Steelers are obviously attracted to Florida State players and they certainly could use another wide receiver and running back in the draft this year.

According to Rob Rang of CBS Sports, Benjamin enjoyed a “pretty good positional workout overall on Tuesday,” but did drop two passes, though one was characterized as a “bad ball.”

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Kevin Gobleck

Man Kelvin Benjamin is a big kid, and i’d love to see him in a Steelers uniform too!

  • Kevin Gobleck

    Wouldn’t mind having Freeman either!

  • steeltown

Well we sure as hell need both WR and RB

It sure seems that the FO is interested in Benjamin, they met with him at the combine and have now had a business meeting/dinner with him at the pro day, but of course if history tells us anything meeting with prospects doesnt mean they’ll be drafted

  • Kevin Gobleck

But if we take them to dinner it increases their chances like with Bell

  • cp72

Took Leveon Bell to dinner last year!!

  • cp72

I watched a bunch of FSU games this year. Freeman runs angry. He was a very underrated piece of that national championship team.

  • StrengthOfVictory

If Benjamin is the Steelers WR pick in this draft, I’ll be smiling. Freeman at RB, too. Let’s see if we can finally let the offense do the driving!

  • Kevin Gobleck

How is his speed would you say?

  • Kevin Gobleck

Those two would make this offense 10 times better!

  • dkoy85

A trade back for Benjamin would be nice. We could certainly use the draft spots. The Panthers might be very desperate for a trade up to grab a top WR. Anybody know what picks that would reward the Steelers?

  • StrengthOfVictory

Assuming Benjamin is one of the Steelers top prospects, they might not take the risk of trading back. They took no chances with Bell. I said “Wow” out loud when they drafted him in the second round (seemed early), but they wanted him. Assuming KB is “supposed” to go in the 20s, the Steelers may be perfectly happy nabbing him at 15. Just a thought.

  • cp72

I don’t know his exact time, but it’s safe to say no one will confuse him with Dri Archer. If I had to speculate I’d say he’s 4.55-4.6 guy. The two things I recall being impressed by was his tenacity and he caught the ball really well.

  • steeltown

He’s 4.5 guy, not a burner, but he’s a good hard runner and durable

  • Doug Sawyer

Benjamin our top pick…a great back in the 5th would be Storm Johnson from UCF… Storm has Pittsburgh written all over him

  • steelster

yes, but Benjamin is falling in mock drafts and more and more experts are saying he will be a second or third round pick. I think the steelers are looking at him because he might fall to them in the second round.

  • Doug Sawyer

they loved Bell and my guess is they love Benjamin

  • steeltown

Yea but with all of the holes we have I still think they go BPA, whether its WR, CB, LB or DL

  • StrengthOfVictory

Perhaps, but you know as well as I do that “projections” mean very little. It only matters that a team walks away from the draft with the players they want…ones that will help that team win.

  • harding36

I can’t see Benjamin getting out of round one. I’d trade back and take either Benjamin or Jordan Mathews.

  • steelster

because he fumbled 7 times last year, yes just like mendenhall.

  • StrengthOfVictory

Yes. I also like Matthews. Agreed.

  • steelster

ebron, Matthews, adams and lee would be better picks than this guy.

  • Steelers12328882

What expert said he’d be a 3rd rd. pick?

  • Derick L Young

LOL and Dwyer. Remeber that Cleveland game

  • StarSpangledSteeler

Nobody has him as a 3rd.

  • steelster

It may yes, not sure if they took jones to dinner last year ?

  • steelster

just some comments after he finished last in the cone drill.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

Yeah but what does the “best” player really mean?

You have to take positional value into account. A DL who can occupy blockers does not equate to a shut down CB. An ILB who can stuff the run does not equate to an OLB who can sack the QB.

WR is an impact position. If you’re picking a DL or ILB at 1.15 they better SCREAM “PRO-BOWLER”. And I don’t think any of these guys do.

I know you really like CJ Mosely. You may list him as the “best” but Mel Kiper just dropped him down to 1.21 because of health/injury concerns. Others are questioning his pure speed and strength (as it pertains to a top 15 pick).

Just my opinion but I think the Steelers are looking at the BIPA. Best IMPACT player available.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

I love the awkward group hug pose.

  • steeltown

BPA is based off of the their draft board and however they perceive the players and/or rank them. Their ranking is going to be different than others, just like on this site for example some people like Dennard some don’t.

I like Mosely but I don’t “really” like him, honestly I dont think we need to draft ILB at all this year.

  • Addison

They took aurther brown out to dinner too. I worry about Benjamin drop and not coming back for the ball. Bens style

  • Steve

Coming back for the ball is taught in the pros along with two feet inbown. Benjamin will be a RZ threat although he is not a speed burner. Kyle – Like the Thomas RB pick from Oregon. Can run back kicks and catch out of the backfield.

  • http://batman-news.com MC

I agree. I’d be ecstatic with Benjamin if they traded down and landed him. I think i’d be midly content if they just took him at 15.

  • ilamarca

I’m starting to like Benjamin more and more. WRs dont get much bigger than 6’5 242 and thats something you cant teach. Him and AB are exact oposites and should compliment each other well. The drops will be fixed and he doesnt have to be a burner.

  • falconsaftey43

Anyone else feel like the Steelers are making it to obvious who they are targeting? Seems if a team covets one of the top 2 or 3 CB or WR, and he’s there at 14, they know they need to trade up ahead of us.

  • Steven Ledbetter

Benjamin is not a 15 pick. He’s slow and drops passes. However, Evans could be another Johnson and if the Steelers could land him that would be the best situation. Benjamin in the 2nd round sounds right. I think Ebron might be their best pick if Evans isn’t available.

  • Addison

Plus he’s 25 I think. Does he play like he’s baby megatron does he play like he’s big… I’m no scout just here say. I’m not down on him just think there might be better at 15. Trade down and I’m all for it.

  • Shannon Stephenson

It is obvious we are going HB in this draft

  • Steve

Benjamin was 23 in Feb. My pick for #1 would be WR Lee from USC who ran a 4.4 at the combine is 5-11 192lbs. A lot like a BIG WR or TE like Benjamin or Ebron.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

I think any mock that lands us: Kelvin Benjamin, Stan Jean Baptiste, and Pierre Desir, will be considered a success in years to come. (If we can get Fuller instead of SJB all the better but I think he’ll be gone).

I can appreciate you sticking with Benjamin. The fact is nobody KNOWS where he will be drafted. What if some rival team takes him at 1.17? That means somebody thought his value was higher. I can tell you this, if Benjamin produces 15 TD catches/yr in the NFL (like he did last year at USC) he’s worth every bit of 1.15. Even if he’s a little slower than ideal and drops some passes.

With the release of Woodley, I do believe a pass rushing OLB has risen upward on our “needs list”. If the first 3 rounds fell: tall WR/CB/LB (in any value order) most fans would be happy.

  • RedCarpetDefense

Got me a chuckle outta that one…nice

  • Sid

I have this feeling if ebron and evans are off the board the steelers will trade down to around 18-20 and a 2. They get benjamin at 18-20 and use their 2 2s to get back into rd 1 at around 28 and pick Kyle Fuller (CB) from VaTech. They can then focus on DL and DL in 3 (comp pics) and I suspect they get a comp in 4 for Mendenhall.. so they will have 2 4s… where they can go TE, OLB. RB in 5, ILB in 6 and a punter in 7.

Also post 1 june they sign j. harrison and velasco.

  • Brian Tollini

You could say this about every NFL team, the Steelers aren’t doing anything the other 31 teams aren’t doing….no worries.

  • Brian Tollini

    1. Darqueze Dennard CB Mich. St
    2. Jordan Matthews WR Vandy
    3. Troy Niklas TE Notre Dame
    4. Taylor Hart DE Oregon
    5. Devon Kinnard OLB USC
    6. LaDarius Perkins RB Miss St.
    7. Dex McDougle CB Maryland

  • Don

Maybe he’s falling in mocks, but it only takes one team to buck the trend and ruin your plans. If you really want a guy, you can’t get too cute about when to draft him.

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

Im not on the benjamin for our first pick group BUT if the cbs are off the board i wouldn’t be upset as long as we grab one or two with the next 2/3 picks and i would not be upset if they reach for who they like thats what i’ve been saying all along

  • Chalie Macc

Im not a fan of Benjamin… But that group pic almosts cements him as Steelers Nation no.1 pick

  • dkoy85

I’d love the trade back for Benjamin and trade up for Fuller- who I like a lot. However, it’s looking like as things get closer to the draft Benjamin will work his way up. After his pro day the NFL Network guys were putting him with the Ravens at 1.17. His height and wing span will have teams (maybe Steelers) reaching for him.

  • Kevin Gobleck

I’m not sure i only knew of bell

  • shawn

so hes a relief to bell … not change of pace then ?

  • shawn

All those are definitely better receivers than Benj … but i wouldnt say a better pick … Benj value as a big target and mismatch in RZ shouldn’t go unnoticed and thats why i think he creates a lot of value … although at 15 i would take Ebron as a no brainier .. but if they do happen to trade back .. i think Benj would be a good target for them !
