Steelers New RB LeGarrette Blount Gets Two-Year Contract Worth $4 Million Max

According to a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Pittsburgh Steelers gave running back LeGarrette Blount a two-year, $4 million contract on Friday.

While we still don’t know the full breakdown of the contract, it is being reported that Blount received a $950,000 signing bonus. In addition, Blount also has NLTBE incentive of $150,000 in 2014 that he can earn if he gains 800 or more rushing yards in 2014.

I’m just guessing, but if the Steelers gave Blount a $850,000 base salary in 2014, his cap charge this year would only be $1.325 million. That would leave a $2 million base salary in 2015 and perhaps a $50,000 roster bonus. That would total the deal out at $4 million.

So after displacement that leaves the team with around 500 k in cap space?

  • SteelersDepot

Based on my guess, they would have $221,934

  • CW

So the team is pretty much done until June 2nd on signing anyone without another restructure or resigning.

  • steelster

    most likely, yes.

Good deal. With the other top RB’s already gone, I figured that the Steelers would have to slightly over pay to get Blount locked up. $2M/year is a little more than James Starks and Darren McFadden received. They may have over paid by $200K, but that’s what happens when the market has dried up.

  • SteelersDepot

You are forgetting about displacement. Might still have room for another veteran one-year qualifying contract.

  • Jason Vancil

So, do the Steelers draft a RB at all in April? A speed guy? Dri Archer, James White, Davonta Freeman or maybe The Black Mamba?

  • CW

True. I did forget about that.

  • PA2AK

given the trend and reality of needed 2-3 quality RB’s to carry the load over a season…it is still very probable. the only clarity becomes what type of back they may target…smaller/shiftier back.

  • Zach Bolen

Depends on how they feel about LSH.

  • Brian Tollini

LaDarius Perkins out of Mississippi St. would be my choice….round 6ish.

  • cp72

I agree think Perkins is very underrated.

  • cp72

Any idea of the projection to sign the draft class?

  • CrazyTerry

Why do they all the Steelers cheap? NE is the cheapest organization among top teams. I can’t believe NE was willing to pay 2.5M to E Sanders at one point. THis is a decent deal if Blount does not fumble.

  • Addison

It’s amazing what $10 million can do. This is deffinetly a different steelers team this year.

  • lefnor

2 million per year? He has a good agent…
    Doesn’t worth half of that.

  • Matt Manzo

I saw somewhere that it was 3.5mil.
    But I have no source.

  • Douglas Andrews

Good signing quality proven backup to Bell. Not a bad offseason

  • AzheDraven

Can we draft that crazy guy that left the combine? LOL,

  • steeltown

I kind of figured when it was a 2yr deal that it would be somewhere around $4MIL with maybe $1MIL guaranteed, its close to the deal Cam Thomas was offered, barring any unforeseen change of course and factor the incentives. I think the money will be well spent.

  • PA2AK

Not worth $1mil a year? By what sane reasoning?

  • Henry

the Woodley 8 mill will give them more than enough. Will have enough leftover to sign Kiesel and/or Harrison.

  • Jeff Anoble

You have to figure the Ravens were waiting in the wings with Ray Rice being in deep trouble. I knew from the beginning we wouldn’t be getting him at a minimum offer of one year.

  • lefnor

He is big and slow. The main reason of his good y/c was the Patriots’ very effective ZBS and the huge holes they opened for him. With Beachum and Foster on the left side, that won’t be the case in Pittsburgh.

  • PA2AK

We’ll have to wait and see how our OL does…will they continue the marked improvement of last year, or will there be regression with Munchack?
Pats OL is very good…but Blount has some big play ability…and I guess all those big plays must have come against 5.0 40yrd DBS that couldn’t catch him. Still you don’t think not being worth $1mil/year is a stretch?

  • lefnor

I think he is an Anthony Dixon type and caliber RB, who signed a three-year 3,5 million deal with Buffalo.
James Starks also would have been a better FA pickup imo with his two-year 3,17 million deal.
But I think Blount will be a good, AFC North style complimentary back but a little bit too expensive.
