Steelers Re-sign Free Agent TE Michael Palmer

The Pittsburgh Steelers have re-signed another one of their unrestricted free agents on Friday as tight end Michael Palmer has agreed to a one-year deal.

Palmer, who was claimed off waives by the Steelers from the Seattle Seahawks last year during training camp, played in all 16 games last season. On offense he played 49 snaps and recorded one catch for eight yards. Palmer’s biggest contribution was as a special teams player.

Contract details were not released but the deal is believed to be for the minimum with a reduced cap charge.

Good. He may or may not make the roster, pending the upcoming draft or a turn around from Paulson and his lowly blocking skills, but this is good cheap signing

  • AndyR34

I was worried he might get away also! LOL

  • PA2AK

As soon as they say that Paulson isn’t on the team, I’ll be happy with the TE situation.

I’m fully aware that Palmer is a 4th string camp body at best, but I think this signing speaks to the Steelers feelings toward drafting Ebron in the 1st. I think they’re content with Miller, Spaeth and Paulson, while bringing in lower level FAs, or possibly a late round pick, for camp competition.

Now, we just need to sign Carrington ASAP, so we can focus on CBs, WRs and RBs in the draft. Let’s be honest, we could use two of each in a perfect world. I bet we also draft a DE “tweener” in the later rounds as an OLB project as well. There’s a certain controversial DE from Missouri who might fit that bill in the 5th or 6th round.

I did not mind the Palmer signing last year and thought he was serviceable but good grief man…lets get some help in our real problem areas instead of signing chumps that are just bodies.

Cross TE off the draft list.

not at all. Palmer is very easy to cut. Paulson as well.

  • SteelersDepot

Palmer is a camp body, that is it. Read nothing into him re-signing.

  • Jollyrob68

I would of liked them to go after Ed Dixon and see what they could do with him.

  • Steelers58

The steelers will draft a tight end in the middle rounds. He will be a blocking te first then a receiver

  • Superdriller316

Yup. I’m all for A. Lynch from Georgia

  • Jason Vancil

  • I will be sure to alert Big Whoop Magazine

  • Seriously? He is a bum aka tackling dummy

  • Ed Dickson=a slightly more talented David Johnson why? In line plodder, with no pass catching ability

  • Jeff Anoble

Why the need for this resigning now ? He or someone like him won’t be around come June? That’s half a million taken away from luring someone here that will actually make the roster.

  • SteelersDepot

$215,000 of cap space at most was used in this signing and that is if Palmer got the $65K signing bonus

  • Kenneth Wilt

This is the Steelers MO. They won’t avoid taking a TE due to the signing, but also won’t feel the need to go out and get one either. I would be okay with Miller, Spaeth, and one of Palmer/Paulson at the teams TEs as long as Heath stays healthy. If that doesn’t happen, then I would want an upgrade.

When they draft the kid out of ND Palmer and Paulson are gone …

  • PA2AK

Steelers seem to finally be able to look forward instead of scrambling to handle their cap situation and finding immediate plugs. With that said, how long is Spaeth going to be around? I don’t see them re-signing Paulson when his contract is up. That means they are in easy position to either draft an immediate contributor in Ebron, or wait and pick up a later round guy to develop. I don’t think this shows them being content with what they have by any means. Just an easy move to put them in a safe position.

Mind. Blown. Superbowl here we come!

  • Madi

Ok, just making sure. You never know around here.

  • PA2AK

I’m sure the Art just popped bottles and Dan needs a change of pants too…that was the whole point behind this signing!

  • J&LSteeler

Please, no. The only circus I want to see come to town is the Ringling Brothers.

  • PA2AK

not to mention that dude is just SLOOOOOOW

  • Toddy Bravo

I’m actually indifferent as to whether we draft Sam or not, although he couldn’t be much worse than Bruce Davis in the 3rd round in 2008. For the record, any apprehension I may have is due to his skills and not the obvious reason. I couldn’t care less about that. If the media wants to make a circus of it, that’s their fault. That said, Woodley was a slow DE coming out of Michigan too. Sam’s resume is at least as good as Woodley’s was. However, I was never a big fan of Woodley’s either, which is why I’m hesitant with Sam. I always thought he was too slow and Sam has a similar body type, production and credentials.
