Steelers Bring LB Demarcus Lawrence, RB Jerick McKinnon In For Thursday Pre Draft Visits

The Pittsburgh Steelers are entertaining a few more pre draft visitors on Thursday as an outside linebacker prospect and running back are in town.

According to Scott Brown of ESPN.com, Boise State linebacker Demarcus Lawrence and Georgia Southern running back Jerick McKinnon are both visiting Steelers today.

Lawrence, who measured in at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine at just under 6’3″, is considered a second-round prospect. He led the Mountain West in 2013 with 20.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks as a defensive end. Several scouts see Lawrence as a 3-4 outside linebacker at the NFL level.

McKinnon, who measured in at the combine at just under 5’9″, reportedly ran a 4.41 40-yard dash time while in Indianapolis. He was Georgia Southern’s leading rusher in 2013 with his second consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season and he averaged 6.5 yards per game in final season with 12 rushing touchdowns and four passing touchdowns.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

Excellent. KcKinnon would be 1 of my picks, hopefully in the 6th, as he can do so many things (Run, catch and pass) that even if he’s only on the field occasionally, the opponents would be scrambling to figure out what play might be coming. Trick plays, options, returns. Interesting.

Lawrence has a lot of guys excited. I don’t understand why.

I am a Georgia Southern student and have seen Mckinnon play up close for the past few years. He didn’t play much QB in 2013 but he was a solid runner. He hits the hole hard. In 2012 when he played nearly full time QB he rarely made a bad decision on when to pitch and when to keep while running the triple option. So he seems like he has a good head on his shoulders.

His accuracy is so so. But he can hit a wide open receiver even on the run. So, trick plays would probably need to be run flawlessly for them to work with him at the helm.

Mckinnon is an interesting prospect, terrific athlete and very physical, good mid-late Rd value

    I don’t understand Lawerence as a rnd 2 either?
I’m also intrigued by McKinnon, someone on here said awhile ago that we should watch out for him and I like everything I hear about him!
I really want our 3rd string RB to be able to do more than just run fast. I want him to play special teams or trick plays or something!

  • Toddy Bravo

I have to give some props to someone on here who was talking up McKinnon as a late round RB possibility about a month ago. Can’t remember who it was, but good call.

I do like a fast, compact RB who hits the hole decisively. Any idea about his ball security and receiving skills? Any work on special teams?

  • steeltown

I think Demarcus Lawrence is legit.. wouldnt take him 46th overall though

  • Superdriller316

    Halfback pass!!!

I’m president of the jerrick mckinnion fan club…I believe he is one of the rbs in this draft what are perfect compliments to Le Backfield

  • Toddy Bravo

lol. Le Backfield. I see what you did there.

He only caught three passes last season, and to be honest the QB throwing to our receivers and running backs was far from a true passer. Not only that, we run the triple option down here so I would be shocked if he was targeted more than five times. So the jury is out on his receiving skill at the moment. His ball security was a little iffy. He did have a few fumbles. As I remember it most were the result of bobbling pitches.

Been a big fan of McKinnon. Triangle numbers pop at you. His ten yard split was as fast as Dri Archer’s.

  • Steve

McKinnon can block, throw, catch, run. Ran a 4.41 in the 40. Has good moves. He did get caught from behind but ran out of gas. Lawrence either had a bad game in the one above, but he sure didn’t show much. Was blown out, didn’t use his hand much, missed a few tackles, was not able to shed his block numerous times.

  • Matt Manzo

Great. Now I gotta go rewatch the film. Too many prospects to watch this year! With all this extra time we should know as much as the FO by draft day!

  • blackandgoldBullion

He is not proto typical so he might be had as late as the 6th, I believe. Perhaps wishful thinking on my part.

  • steeltown

It just seems like he has good pass rush ability, long limbs and good short area quickness and burst and uses his hands well.

Similar stats to Woodley coming out of college

  • Toddy Bravo

Take it for what it’s worth, but the popular rankings sites have him as a 4-5 rounder. Like you, I also thought he might be a project considering he was an option QB in college, but I came away really impressed with his tape. He often took handoffs as a RB and displayed good speed and surprising power. I’d be pleased with him in the 5th round, probably no earlier than that though.

  • Matt Manzo

He does seem more explosive than Jeffcoat!

  • Lewis

I like Lawrence. Not worth the 15, but if he’s there in the 2nd I guess it wouldnt be the worst pick. This video doesn’t make him look impressive at all though. He’s stood up, cut down, no where near the play in most of the highlights.
