Steelers Hosting Duke CB Ross Cockrell For A Tuesday Pre Draft Visit

The Pittsburgh Steelers are hosting another defensive back for a pre draft visit on Tuesday as Duke cornerback Ross Cockrell is in town, according to Bob Labriola of Steelers Digest.

Cockrell, who measured in at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine right at 6’0″, ran a 40-yard dash time of 4.56 while in Indianapolis. However, at his Pro day, Cockrell reportedly lowered that time considerably.

It’s also interesting to note that Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert was reportedly present for the Duke Pro Day.

During his final two seasons at Duke, Cockrell registered eight interceptions while leading the ACC with five interceptions in his junior season.

The Steelers are also expected to host Virginia Tech cornerback Kyle Fuller for a pre draft visit later on this week.

Cockrell is expected to be drafted in the third or fourth round according to several draftnik projections.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

I REALLY like this kid and can really see him in a Steelers uniform.

I agree if the price is right….hope he’s still there in the 4th rd like your mock draft!

I think the Steelers will take two CB’s. A top corner in the 1st/2nd round and a mid round guy.

Cockrell, E. J. Gaines and Colvin (knee injury) would be nice selections in rounds 4-6.

    Agreed

  • steeltown

This is the perfect mid Rd project defensive back

  • SteelersDepot

Just speculating, but I think Colbert has a thing for Ross.

    Agree!

This guy excites me! I’m doing my happy dance right now!

  • Bill Sechrengost

Gee, maybe they’re going to take three CB’s in the draft.

thats my thinking …. 2 high (1st – 4th rounds ) and one late like colvin in the 6th … our hit rate is not high with DBs so picking 3 would be a smart move

  • shawn

Looks intriguing for 4th rnd or later … dont quite see him as a possible #1 or #2 CB … but could possibly be a good nickel or dime guy which we surely need. I am in the minority here and i realise most are high on Gay, but i am not … i think we need to upgrade ASAP on our nickel and dime backs which are becoming almost as important as starters in todays NFL … I’m really hoping we transition away from Gay after this year by upgrading our DBs by picking up 3 quality DBs in this draft !

I don’t like his play. He is average in everything. Not too explosive and not too physical. I don’t see the upside.
I like Terrance Mitchell, Walt Aikens or Dontae Johnson much more in the 4-6th rounds.

  • Matt Manzo

Gay seems to be better when we don’t count on him. And that doesn’t make me feel confident in him. We do need a lot of new CBs.
Gay has been fine and played well but we need playmakers. I’m hoping Shark can start making plays and that Mitchell does too. That way there’s not so much pressure on the rookies.

  • RW

He doesn’t have the speed to cover the leagues top WRs, but he could develop into a solid #2 or slot defender, for sure.

Probably won’t be there when the Steelers make their 4th round pick. Too expensive for our current 3rd round pick. Do you think the Steelers will do another trade in the early 4th round for him? We should get at least another 3rd and 4th round compensatory pick for losing Ziggy Hood and Emanuel Sanders…

  • steelster

Are these benjamins highlights or crockwells ?

  • tim

I wasn’t impressed by THIS game…I mean, he had some stats…forced fumble, maybe pass defense d, a taxkle or 2 but….he gets blown out in run support and and didnt drop his shoulder to tackle, he dropped his head and missed a tackle or two….there are better CB’s to be had out there guys…

  • shawn

i have hopes in Shark and Mitchell making plays as well & I fully expect us to have 2 additional quality CBs after the draft … maybe another safety as well!
