Steelers Sign WR Darrius Heyward-Bey

The Pittsburgh Steelers visit Wednesday with Indianapolis Colts free agent wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey must have went well as it is now being reported that he’s signed a one-year contract with the team.

While details of the contract are unknown at this time, one would think that the former first-round draft pick of the Oakland Raiders signed for the veteran minimum.

Heyward-Bey had a miserable season last year with the Colts and it included him dropping nine passes. The Maryland product still has youth and speed on his side, however, and he will now compete for a spot on the Steelers 53 man roster in training camp.

The signing of Heyward-Bey shouldn’t affect the Steelers draft plans at all when it comes to drafting a wide receiver. If anything, his signing gives the Steelers a layer of experienced depth should they not be able to draft a wide receiver to their liking in the early rounds.

Heyward-Bey is the second outside free agent wide receiver that the Steelers have signed this offseason as former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Lance Moore was signed a short time ago to replace Jerricho Cotchery, who signed as a free agent with the Carolina Panthers.
