TCU CB Jason Verrett Has A Pre Draft Visit Scheduled With Steelers

TCU cornerback Jason Verrett is considered by many to be the fifth-best cornerback in this year’s draft class and he is yet another player that is scheduled to have a visit in April with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In a Tuesday evening interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Verrett told Alex Marvez that he is currently slated to be in Pittsburgh on April 13th.

Verrett, who measured in at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine at 5094 and 189 pounds, also told Marvez that he had surgery in March to repair a torn Labrum and that his recovery time is slated to be three months. The young cornerback expects, however, to be ready for training camp.

In 2013, Verrett registered two interceptions, 14 pass breakups and one forced fumble to go along with 39 total tackles.

Verrett’s lack of size makes him a prime candidate to play in the slot, but it could also prevent him from being drafted in the first two rounds as well. He’s not a great tackler and that could also hurt his overall draft stock.

The Steelers are bringing in quite a few cornerbacks for pre draft visits this offseason and a few more names are sure to surface in the month of April. On Wednesday, the Steelers hosted top-rated Michigan State cornerback Darqueze Dennard.

He’d be a great nickel CB, some have him going in the 1st Rd… personally I wouldnt draft a projected slot CB in the 1st Rd, he seems like 2nd Rder to me, very good athlete though

  • shawn

thats exactly how i feel … would be a great nickel back but not worth a 1st or a 2nd … we need a starting CB for those rounds … if he fell to 3rd would be all in !

  • Craig Ressler

    Yeah, no thanks.

  • Doug Sawyer

If he had surgery…that’s a red flag…way too many CB’s available to take him in the top two spots with that risk

I think he can be a #2 CB opposite Cortez. Is he small? Somewhat – he is 5’10”. However, he has a 39′ vertical and runs 4.4. Verrett has great hips and nice ball skills as well. I think he is the best all-around CB in the draft…minus his height of course.

If he could be had in the 2nd round, I would be elated.

And he is in the same mold as Tim Jennings and Antoine Winfield…
I like his first round selection much better than picking Dennard who is stiff and has little upside.
Verrett can be a #1 CB, I absolutley don’t care about his size. His mirroring ability is just outstanding.

  • Craig Ressler

Might be, but if we are talking in the 1st, I’d much rather have another player. That’s me personally.

Did u see him at the combine. This kid is an amazing athlete. Fluid hips can turn and run.
Too bad he isn’t three inches taller

  • StarSpangledSteeler

I thought I was the only one. As far as all around “cover” skills go, I also think Varrett is the best CB in the draft.

By that I mean, he has the quickest feet, the quickest change of direction, the quickest reaction, the best eyes, and the stickiest legal technique.

If he was three inches taller and ten pounds heavier he’s easily a top 10 pick. Easily. But therein lies the problem. How do you expect him to cover these tall WR’s deep down the field? It’ll be a Willie Gay scenario time after time after time. I don’t know. Maybe 2.15?

He’s my favorite of the “small” CBs!

When I watched the film I didn’t notice the missed tackles. But I did see him flying around like a missile at times! It seems he wants to hit, maybe just needs coaching on wrapping up? I like that better than “afraid of contact”!
