The Terrible Podcast – Talking NFL Draft With Dave-Te Thomas Episode

terriblepodcast

Season 4, Episode 94 of The Terrible Podcast is up and with co-host David Todd out of action on this Monday, I am pleased to be joined by Dave-Te Thomas from Scouting Services.

If you have listened to the podcast over the years, you know that it is hard to summarize an interview with Thomas. I throw out the name players and positions to him and he talks about him. As usual, we bounce all over the place and while you won’t agree with everything he has to say, you can’t deny how opinionated he is.

Hold on tight, because this is one fast moving hour of NFL Draft talk that has a Pittsburgh Steelers slant to it.

Thanks for listening and don’t forget to call or email with questions or comments and please pass us along to your friends!

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • JayBirdDC

Dave is so in on Benjamin. Please no. Bust potential all over him. Work ethic, weight, and drops. Not at 15 please.

  • Douglas Ruby

Dave-Te is great. He cracked me up 4-5 times. He knows his stuff. Listen to this podcast.

  • Doug Sawyer

    nope…do not agree

  • JayBirdDC

All I have to say about that is if you were in a race with a pregnant woman, you would come in third. Best Dave-Te comment. I will agree to disagree.

  • Doug Sawyer

well he pretty much showered Benjamin with praise …so what are you not hearing?…it’s not some new ideal that Benjamin would be used in a quasi TE/WR fashion but his redzone production is why Pittsburgh WILL take him number 1

  • JayBirdDC

I’m hearing him say he ranked him as 5th on his WR board, behind Watkins, Evans, Beckham, and someone else.

  • Doug Sawyer

added is that Beckham brings nothing to the table that Wheaton doesn’t already possess …If Pittsburgh wants a return man they can land DeAngelo Thomas later in the draft rather than risk injury to our top pick

  • Doug Sawyer

yes…you are…but those are in terms of pure WR…Benjamin is not that and Pittsburgh does not need that …the Steelers need a different dimension to their receiving game

  • Doug Sawyer

If Pittsburgh goes into a 4 WR set Brown and Wheaton the Y and X and Benjamin and Moore in the slots….that combination of size and speed on the field would be devastating

  • JayBirdDC

I agree and those are all good points. My main concern is the risk factors of Benjamin (age, weight, drops, work ethic) and at 15, I would air on the side of picking someone with less upside but who is more established now rather more upside/downside (which I see Benjamin as). I think the Steelers depth issues don’t give them the luxury to miss at 15.

  • srdan

Best CB prospect in 10 years? c’mon maaaaaaaan

  • 804Stiller

When Dave-Te said Dennard thrives in zone and the Steeler play more man, I was thrown off some. I thought the opposite. Although, I know Ike did a lot of press work. Also, Barr being better than Mack. I’m not a pro scout nor do I play one on TV but I think Barr could be the bust out of those two.

  • chris ward

Great Podcast, always interesting to listen to David-Te and his thoughts on draft prospects.

  • Weiss Chad

I agree on no to beckam .I agree on Thomas.tottally disagree w Benjamin .to many red flags drops, weight ,meetings, and now the system..Second rd maybe only cause potential.too much risk for 1.15

  • Weiss Chad

18 catches given up out of 118 attempts for 104 yards all year .I agree a hundred percent it’s more like 15-20 yrs

  • Weiss Chad

Best podcast I ever listened too!!

  • StarSpangledSteeler

Yeah, that was the one comment i had to roll my eyes about. Dennard is better than Revis? Better than Patterson? I think not.

  • Spencer Krick

Dave-Te is awesome, love listening to him talk shop.

  • falconsaftey43

So small tightends are bad and he can’t stand Ebron’s drops. But move Benjamin to TE at about the same size as Ebron (actually a little lighter in the pants with half the athletic ability) with his drops and he’ll be an all pro? Not sure I follow that one.

  • Cols714

That was a strange interview. The guy has opinions, that’s for sure. Has anyone ever checked his track record over time?

  • Jason Brant

Never heard of Blake Annen before. His measurables are insane. I’d love to get him with a late pick.

  • SteelersDepot

Yeah, I caught him on that. I think he was confusing his style with someone else. Maybe Roby.

  • SteelersDepot

I nominate you for the job. Please report back.

  • srdan

    Lol

  • srdan

    Lol c’mon maaaaaaan

  • Iron Cadet

    I’d be happy to make a 50
Dollar bet right now that Pittsburgh doesn’t take him at 1:15

  • harding36

That was great. Thanks, Dave. My thoughts: (1) Thomas isn’t the only scout who is in love with Beckham. I don’t really get it, but the pro’s seem to be all over this guy; (2) Man, I hope someone in front of the Steelers likes Barr as much as Thomas does; (3) I will be shocked if the Steelers take Donald. They’re not changing their defense for one player. But I hope he’s right about that Dallas/Detroit deal, since Detroit is probably interested in Dennard. (4) The Rams taking Shazier at 13 overall makes a lot of sense. Good to hear a professional scout like Shazier as much as I do. (5) Anyone who says that Thomas doesn’t like KB wasn’t listening to the same interview I was. For all the KB haters, what more do you need? Seriously. One of the best in the business just said that, right now, he’d only take one guy — Calvin Johnson — over Benjamin in the red zone. That sealed it for me. Benjamin at 1.15 just makes so much sense.

  • http://batman-news.com MC

I’m glad Dave feels the same about Benjamin as i.
If you take a guy who is coming out of college at 240 pounds as a WR and he’s known to not be the most motivated, you risk him showing up to a trainign camp overweight and his size will be useless if he can’t get a release or seperation from a good NFL caliber CB.
At 15 i’m not comfortable taking a WR with drop problems and a questionable attitude.
Take Dennard, Shazier or Donald. If they end up with Benjamin it better be after a trade down.

  • nicolaisim

Agree with Date-Te Thomas – get Aaron Donald!

  • nicolaisim

As a prospect.. yeah probably, certainly has the numbers to back it up.
Ultimately he won’t be Revis or Peterson, but you could settle for less and still get an elite cornerback. Let’s see.

  • nicolaisim

Thanks for the podcast Dave. Really good job getting through the prospect.
Did Dave-Te say that Donte Moncrief has small but great hands?
-Wasn’t his drops and bocy control the big knock on him?

  • GoSteelerz

Just saw a hightlight video of him in a game against Purdue. Good hands and an excellent blocker. If nobody is really looking at him, he could be a real nice mid to late round pick.

  • dkoy85

Probably a good thing if he doesnt turn out better than Revis or Peterson… we sure as hell cant afford a $100million CB ;-)

  • Brandon James

That is so scary to think about. Wheaton who can stretch the field, brown who has the route running ability and quickness to run those intermediate routes with Moore shifty in the slot, and a Tall Draft pick looking for mismatches. It is the perfect combination of receivers.

  • Skinny Merlino

Isn’t this the guy that said Eddie lacy was gonna be a bust last yr even though he still could he played damn well this year….is this guy usually on point with his take on players? His constant use of horrible jokes makes him hard to listen to good podcast none the less

  • Skinny Merlino

Remember when the goofs 90 espn years ago said Aaron curry was the safest pick in the draft lol somebody should make a video of all kipers horrible analysis of prospects

  • Hard Row

The difference is Ebron plays small. He plays like a WR. Benjamin plays big and physical more like a TE.

  • http://batman-news.com MC

I would of liked his opinion of Calvin Pryor. I’ve been crushing on that dude cause of his hitting ability. If Dennard, Donald, Shazier arent there at 15 i have no problem with the steelers taking him in the first even though it’s not a need.

  • srdan

What you are saying is that he is on the Andrew Luck and Jadevion Clowney level if he is a once in 10 years prospect. He is not that. I hope we get Dennard, but my expectations are grounded.

  • Cols714

I wouldn’t even know where to start. I wasn’t trying to get a dig in or anything, I was just wondering why we should listen to the guy. That is if his track record indicates he knows what he’s talking about or if he’s mainly blowing smoke.

  • StrengthOfVictory

I’m a bit more inclined to listen closely to Dave-Te when he puts up warnings about why it’s NOT a good idea to take this or that player (Ebron, Bryant). When he starts gushing about the players he likes, however…especially in the case of players he says might be available in the fifth, but he’d take in the third…I find myself a bit more skeptical. Not because I question his eye for talent, but only because I wonder if he might be overstating things just a bit.

  • Randy Neff

He absolutely didn’t say that. He loved Lacy and had him as his #1 RB. He did say prior to the draft, that Jarvis Jones had the biggest bust potential.

  • http://www.nyob.com/ Dr. Doom

I enjoyed that, he was very funny. But good points as well.

  • http://www.nyob.com/ Dr. Doom

No one said you had too.

  • Randy Neff

The drops are concerning with Benjamin. Dave Te said you have to live with the drops if you draft him, because he will make other plays. My problem is if the season is on the line and its 4th and 10 and he is he your primary target. Will Ben trust him ? If he can perfect the back shoulder fade and not drop the ball, he is a keeper. But Dave Te doesn’t like him outside.

  • Doug Sawyer

If he was used like Thomas on the Broncos …I don’t see what the difference is…Thomas is 6’3 235…bring in a Benjamin @6’5 245…that doesn’t matter. No one is talking about Thomas’s weight so why Benjamin?Any talk of laziness is old news that Benjamin himself brought up…he spoke openly about not being mature and having bad habits but further explained that he has since changed…that is the difference you see between his Freshman and Sophomore seasons.

Which is also a factor,he has had a small window in which to show his ability but in that time has grown immensely
his upside is fantastic ..his proven redzone production is a fact(something the Steelers direly need) He could fill the role of TE/WR that is now the new direction the NFL is heading in…It’s a pass happy league …guys like Benjamin will be in demand and not the traditional TE’s of old

  • Doug Sawyer

You’re going to do a massive face palm on Draft day

  • Doug Sawyer

    watch the youtube video

“Kelvin Benjamin Interview August 19″ this was before the season…the kid has his head on

  • Iron Cadet

Care to make a bet? I’m a Man of my word. Now is your chance to prove how sure you are

  • Brendon Glad

I hope that the Steelers will try to draft a combo of these players at some point. I’m getting fairly discouraged about my Phillip Gaines “sleeper pick” I mentioned in February, as I see now he is slotted at 56 on cbs draft board. Up from NOWHERE 2 months ago on the same board. That stinks. But, I still think that they will hope Evans or Gilbert is available in rd 1, and if not, will select Donald or trade down. Then in round 2, I think Tuitt will be picked if Donald is not, possibly Benjamin if Evans is not…and I think they will hold their breath and wait on Gaines, unfortunately. By round 3, they will need to address CB and will hope Gaines is there (maybe even trading up to the early 3rd if he makes it through the 2nd. Then, if not, they may take Victor Hampton or some other CB in the 3rd. After that, I think they will fill their 6 slots with ILB, TE, S, OT, CB, and WR. I think Cockrell at CB, and Janis at WR will be good value picks if WR and CB aren’t addressed satisfactorily earlier.

  • Rob

Dave, you think you could tell us more about that linebacker from Cincinnati that Dave-TE compared to Levon Kirkland? Is he on the steelers radar?

  • Weiss Chad

Don’t come back to ball, body catches, waits for ball to come down to him.you can’t do that in nfl

  • steelster

How is weight not a big issue with Benjamin. At 240 and 4 percent body fat how is he going to lose weight, He could end up weighing 250 or 255 if he adds some upper body muscle. I hope he scores a lot because he is a huge risk.

  • Matt Pella

Dave, Dave-Te said that 27 NFL teams pay him for his professional opinion. Are the Steelers one of those teams? And if not, do they employ different agencies for their opinions?

  • Matt Manzo

I just watched some film! He looks like a beast. He said if we’re still pissed we didn’t get Burfict that we should draft this guy. Greg Blair. I just can’t find where he’s projected to go?
I’d love to hear what others know about him!

  • Kyle Owens

Dave Te’s Greatest Hits 2014 Edition

    1. Move Kelvin Benjamin to tight end
    2. Eric Ebron is a muff diver
    3. Resign James Harrison
    4. Move C.J. Mosely to OLB
    5. Taylor Lewan is a future felon.

Dave, if I were to tweet this stuff to you, I’d be blocked so fast…

  • Rob

I’m happy someone else is excited about him. A young Levon Kirkland would certainly solve our middle backer problem. I wish Dave would give the Kelvin Benjamin Drum a rest and get to some of these lesser known prospects. Dave-Te really go me excited about a few of them, especially Darques Dennard-not that he’s lesser known. Dave-Te seems to have a good track record. I remember last year he was saying how steadman bailey from West Virginia was the 2nd coming of john stallworth. Everything I’ve read regarding him and the rams say they love him and expect big things this year.

  • Matt Manzo

Yeah. The more guys I get excited about the more I worry they’ll be picked by other teams! I hope we spend our later round picks on some guys that can stick around!

  • Bill

The difference is that Demaryious Thomas looks and runs like Calvin Johnson while Kelvin Benjamin looks like he works at a Waffle House. There is no comparison between the two. Thomas would run circles around Benjamin.

  • Callentown

Dude, are you Benjamin’s agent??? You’re all over this board TELLING people how he’s the man.

What gives? Any other ideas besides this one?

  • Doug Sawyer

It’s a mock discussion you start at the top the number 1 pick and you stay on topic…this pod cast has Dave talking about Benjamin …sorry if that was lost on you
the whole “TE” talk seems to have passed right over your head too…so to be honest I mostly talk about Benjamin when he is the subject at hand in the article I’m commenting on…I also would not be going on about him
If there wasn’t such a ridiculous unfounded dissent at his potential pick at 15

You don’t have to believe me or agree but there are plenty of reasons we very well might take him

  • bonairsfavoriteson

    Dream on Doug.

  • Matthew Suloman

At least he dosentf f’in stutter
