terriblepodcastSeason 4, Episode 95 of The Terrible Podcast is up and co-host David Todd start this show off by talking about the Pittsburgh Steelers signing of punter Adam Podlesh on Wednesday.

The Steelers have had a few more draft hopefuls in for pre draft visits so we go over the list and talk a little bit about the safety position being as they have now brought in three safeties so far for visits. We discuss how this relates to Shamarko Thomas as well.

We move on to talk about my latest mock draft that was released on Wednesday before talking about how the Steelers might consider looking into trading for San Francisco 49ers running back LaMichael James. This turns into another trade-down discussion.

We mop up some loose ends before closing the show by talking about the Wednesday episode of Caught in the Draft that was aired on the NFL Network.

Regarding the safety position… Calvin Pryor? Deone Bucannon? The Steelers aren’t bringing these guys in just for fun. Colbert/Tomlin are seriously considering drafting an early round safety.

If you look at the way NFL offenses are now constructed, you need 3 safeties on the field. Big strong fast guys who can run with these hybrid TE’s. But can also crash down to tackle like LB’s. (Pryor and Bucannon fit that description).

  • srdan

I think safety is not on teh board RD1. Like Dave said, I would be shocked if it went that way. I think what they are doing is covering bases in case one of the safeties start falling. They are not tied to Mitchel beyond two seasons. Pryor will not be there in the second round, but say that he is, you certianly want to know a bit more detail.

But still, I don’t get the reasoning for taking OBJr.

Yes, I would trade our 15th for their 30th and their 3rd. Honestly, LJ is just icing. A third round pick in this draft is worth a lot. And as crazy as it is to talk about trades, I do think that the 49ers are looking to consolidate some picks since their roster is pretty stacked already. The middle of the first makes sense becuase they need corners. And I think the steelers are looking for more picks (i hope so). As crazy as it sounds to be talking about it, its hard to totally discredit it.

Not so much overly thinking this but flip 15th for 30th and get LJ and a 3rd, solves RB situation, can pick up a couple RBs as UDFAs, draft DE Stephon Tuitt Rd 1 or NT Louis Nix depending on who is there at #30 which fixes DL, draft WR in RD 2 (Matthews, Robinson, Moncrief) depending on who is there, then double hit CB in Rd 3. Then use Rds 4 through 7 to hit OLB, ILB, TE, OL, S. Just a thought. Then can debate on signing who to sign after June 1 out of Velasco, The Beard, Steph-Howling, Harrison.

  • Matt Manzo

I like the trade idea with SF but I’d want one of their higher 3rd rounders, not the late one!

And Dave! Did you say you were gonna look into the kid from Cinncinati? Greg Blair? I’d like to know if he he really is the next Burfict?

The 49ers have two 2nd rounders at pick 57 and 61 overall. To move from 15 to 30 is a big jump, and I’d demand one of those 2nd round picks. That would give us picks at 30, 46 and 61. I’d take that.

San Fran trading up is a given. I mentioned it in many, many posts over the last 2 months, and lo and behold, we finally have all kinds of guys talking about it. SF traded up last year in the 1st and I believe they only had to give up an additional 3rd. So if Pittsburgh has SF on speed dial as I suggested, they should not expect the full book value of the 2nd and 3rd additional. In a deep draft such as this they should be able to get the SF 1st and 1 of the 3rd round picks. That’s fine by me because if some amateur like me can figure this out months ago, then all the NFL teams must also be aware of it and many will be looking to trade down.

The reason why this would be perfect right now, despite being very unusual for the Steelers, is because if you at rankings and mocks, the meat of the draft is in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. I truly believe there will be many, many potential starters in those rounds and this potential trade allows the Steelers to pick 4 guys between 1.29 and their 3rd comp.

You will see names such as Tuitt, WR Matthews, and many more of the guys we have all been talking about that will probably be drafted in that range. This will give you 1 extra player. That’s 4 guys that you would expect to start no later than 2015 if it all works out and you have chosen well to begin.

With everyone talking about a 1st rounder that needs to start immediately, I ask you why? Do you expect the Steelers to challenge for the Super Bowl in 2014? I don’t. So if the Steelers choose the players with the most upside potential I would be more than pleased. And if things work out you would definitely have a good core of players that will challenge for championships soon.
