2014 NFL Draft – Day Three Discussion Thread

The third and final day of the 2014 NFL Draft is about to get underway and the Pittsburgh Steelers are currently scheduled to make six more selections on Saturday. Will they address the wide receiver and cornerback positions in the next two rounds or will they go elsewhere?

Let this thread serve as the discussion thread for day three so feel free to discuss the previous picks already made by the Steelers and other teams as well as the picks you think the black and gold should make over the course of the next several hours.

As always, I only ask that you stay away from personal attacks as I really don’t have time to babysit the comments. Have fun and there will be plenty of more post on the way.

  • Weiss Chad

This draft is all it’s been made out to be.unreal how deep this draft is

  • Weiss Chad

There goes Watkins :(..not liking this 2 cbs first two picks.make a four and six to move up for desir

  • westcoasteeler

Man. I think the Steelers liked Breeland.

  • dgh57

NO!, 2 more CBs off the board already!

  • Steelers12328882

Jalen Sanders was just drafted and he was linked to the Steelers. If they really wanted Archer then looks like we took him in the right spot.

  • westcoasteeler

I fully expect them to go O line…

  • WilliamSekinger

Slower and weighs even less than Archer

  • nato762

    Ellington was a maybe too….

  • cp72

How brilliant would Aaron Colvin be in the 5th. Whomever we draft is learning for a year anyway.

  • Steelers12328882

Grrrrr Ross Cockrell just went to the Bills. Thought for sure that’s who the Steelers were targeting. Will Desir fall to us?

  • Weiss Chad

This is not going well cockrell,Watkins gone.Desir,EJ Gaines and if one is taken u gotta move up

  • Weiss Chad

Did the forty in 18 steps FYI that’s the same as Calvin johnson

  • Weiss Chad

    Make that three bro.:(

  • Weiss Chad

What’s w all these centers?Didnt know draft was this deep w centers

  • cp72

Have a feeling its Bryant, Jeffcoat, or Desir

  • dgh57

There goes Aaron Colvin to the Jags!!

  • WIINGY

    Steelers going OLB. 🙂

  • cp72

    Chit

  • 20Stoney

    Dislike

  • Dave Bradley

any idea on who we pick?

  • WilliamSekinger

    Martavis Bryant is still there

  • ergomesh

    Daniel McCullers (DT)
HT: 6’7″ WT: 352LBS. I know cB is need but this guys a beast

  • ergomesh

    Rashaad Reynolds cb ?

  • westcoasteeler

    4.34/40!

  • ergomesh

    I like that too

  • cp72

Can’t believe Desir is still around…Colbert doesn’t mind small school corners

  • ergomesh

Like sweed though but faster than moye

  • James Christensen

    Byrant, WR, Clemson.

  • RW

    Nice 🙂

  • WilliamSekinger

    Bingo

  • westcoasteeler

    I love it!

  • 20Stoney

I really got used to Jason LaConfora giving the picks before they went to the podium. Miss it!

  • WilliamSekinger

Guess the Steelers brass just disagrees with everyone else about their CB needs.

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

    M.bryant

  • James Christensen

Watch them take CBs the rest of the way, and hope one hits 😉

  • joeyp

So far all 4 players the Steelers picked I choose in my mock draft (wrong rounds on most) how is everyone else doing?

  • Matt Manzo

I’m stoked for MBryant but surprised we didn’t take Desir and wait for Enunwa or Janis!

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

    Cbs t te olb next

  • taztroy43

    Yes bryant

  • James Christensen

Round 5 targets: Desir, Reynolds, Lawson, Aikens, EJ Gaines.

  • cp72

Well we are not a slow team anymore let’s hope we are a better team.

Is Al Davis making the picks from the grave?

  • James Christensen

I want Branchflower in 6 or 7. Quincy Enunwa could be another target in 6 or 7. We got two picks in 5. I will walk around my neighborhood naked if we don’t take a CB with one of those two picks.

  • westcoasteeler

Wow. Just read on cbssports that Dri Archer is 5’3. Boy what a typo…

  • Weiss Chad

Nice call..I’m worried about the things I keep hearing on this kid.i hope they are wrong.Worried about charector and drops.suprisingly fast for his size.

  • John Noh

Is tight end in the cards for the next pick? Or is CB a higher priority?

  • cp72

Who’s the fastest guy left….I’m putting my money on him.

  • cp72

    You got Shazier? Nice.

  • 20Stoney

Pick is definitely going to up the competition between Moye, Brown, and Bey.

  • David Hosmer

Any chance we trade for Brandon Flowers? Heard he was available.

  • joeyp

I had shazier for the 2nd round. I debated with switching him and Beckham and put went with Beckham in the first and Shazier in the second.

  • David Hosmer

Desir gone to Browns now too

  • joeyp

For all the panic about the Steelers grabbing a CB maybe they figure with the huge number of corners coming into the league this year that means there will be a number of veterans flushed out of other teams for them to add on cheap contracts prior to the start of training camp.

  • cp72

Yup and we get 8 million in cap space in a few weeks.

  • cp72

You know the exciting thing we can still add five more guys.

  • joeyp

    DT, TE, CB, G/T, OLB

  • James Christensen

Yes, and that goes for receivers, too.

  • James Christensen

    That’s the theme for them so far. a 4.4 LB, a 4.2 scatback and a 4.41 WR.

  • westcoasteeler

Next pick will be Jeffcoat if he’s still there

  • cp72

    Think he’s good value here.

  • James Christensen

I’d like to see Rashaad Reynolds, CB.

  • WIINGY

Shaquille Richardson May be the pick.

  • joeyp

hoping for McCullers now for some DT depth

  • joeyp

    Good call

  • James Christensen

    YOu got it right.

  • westcoasteeler

    Nice call

  • James Christensen

They had him in for a visit.

  • westcoasteeler

And nothing was written on him…

  • WIINGY

Yep and I remember Dave-Te liked him.

  • David Hosmer

    Nailed it

  • David Hosmer

What do we want at end of 5? DL, TE, OLB, another CB?

  • 20Stoney

    Good point joeyp.

  • joeyp

Fastest player available would be the house bet this year 🙂

  • westcoasteeler

    Found it

  • Ernest

curious what other CBs are they targeting because Shaq Richardson was the only corner that was brought in for a visit that was available.

  • cp72

I love Jeffcoat with the next pick

  • Ernest

I’m thinking OLB too, Jeffcoat, Gayle, or Hubbard would be nice.

  • westcoasteeler

    Has to be.

  • WIINGY

They brought in Jamea Thomas for a visit and were at the Florida pro day. Although Watkins is probably who they were looking at in Florida.

  • Ernest

forgot about Thomas. I’m putting more stock into the visits over pro days since 4 of 5 picks were in for visits.

  • David Hosmer

    I’d be cool with Jeffcoat

  • nato762

Lache Seatrunk next ?..who will be our third back..we really don’t have one. Great value at this point and he was in for a visit. Archer not for that role I don’t think.

  • westcoasteeler

Jeffcoat first, Seastrunk will be there next round

  • cp72

    Marcus Roberson still there too.

  • James Christensen

    Jeffcoat or Rashaad Reynolds

  • westcoasteeler

Good size, but at 4.61/40 who knows if we like him. I’d be ecstatic w another CB, though. But I think there’s too much value w JJeffcoat. We’ll see right now!

  • joeyp

wonk wonk wonk, not this time sir

  • WIINGY

    Didn’t see that one coming

  • westcoasteeler

    Alright! A versatile Olineman.

  • Ernest

alright, three more picks. In any order CB/S, OLB, and DT.

  • David Hosmer

If they feel they need a true RB3, Storm Johnson from UCF would be a steal later too. Dude can play.

  • nato762

just go value the rest of the way..

  • Dave Bradley

    Zack Kerr DT Deleware…6th rd?

  • David Hosmer

    How about that TE Blanchflower?

  • joeyp

Still hoping for Barrett, Shaquil OLB, B. Annen TE and the best available talent of CB/DT

  • scottbb

    I’d like Exum

  • joeyp

Ideally I would like Exum or McCullers with the next pick then Barrett with the second this round and Annen in the 7th.

  • joeyp

    there goes Exum

  • scottbb

    or not ughhhhhhhhhh

  • Dave Bradley

this kid is still available amazing Kelcy Quarles

  • westcoasteeler

    There goes Lache

  • scottbb

yup. dang. the last 2 rds haven’t worked out well imo

  • westcoasteeler

Still have Jeffcoat and Roberson out there

  • Ernest

    jeffcoat or gayle

  • scottbb

    there goes gaines

  • Ernest

    zumwalt is good too

  • scottbb

jeffcoat would be phenomenal at this point, no?

  • scottbb

    nailed it

  • Dave Bradley

well that through my theory of drafting for speed out the window

  • Wing t

    Zumwalt baby. Look out baby

  • Dave Bradley

Think we draft a NT? who do we draft next?

  • westcoasteeler

    Huntington Beach bad boy!

  • westcoasteeler

    Jimea Thomas would be cool

  • westcoasteeler

    Although Robersons bigger…

  • Ernest

Beau Allen could be next pick…only DT left that visited.

  • Dave Bradley

I am thinking NT. Don’t know why. I have been wrong with every Position pick so far. Thomas maybe a litlte small. I wonder why Marcus Roberson is still on the board?

  • Dave Bradley

389 Beau Allen DT Wisconsin Sr 6-3 333––<sweet

  • westcoasteeler

I’d be stoked w a NT. I wonder why he AND Jeffcoat are falling?

  • Ernest

So is Shazier playing outside and zumwalt playing inside because I thought they are both ILB?

  • NW86

    Maybe TE? NT? DB?

  • Dave Bradley

NE drafted Thomas with pick 206

  • CuldesacBill

It seems like there are still quite a few safeties available. Maybe Dion Bailey USC?

  • Richard Edlin

They are. We can’t have too many ILBs, apparently.

  • John

UMass TE coming if still on board or Wisconsin DL. Yuck.

  • Ernest

i think either Garvin or Wilson get cut

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

    Here comes cb roberson

  • joeyp

    YEAH finally

  • westcoasteeler

    McCullers!!! Whoa!

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

    Is he any good

  • westcoasteeler

They don’t like any corners! They are going shopping.

  • joeyp

This pretty much sums him up… A big-bodied, short-area plugger with some underachiever traits, McCullers has raw tools that could become special if he learns to harness the innate strength in his body and pairs with a DL coach who can refine his mechanics. Up to coach Mitchell to get it out of him.

  • WilliamSekinger

    Mount McCullers!

  • joeyp

looking for TE Annen out of Cincinnati to close it out

  • joeyp

If we can get him to not eat himself out of the league and get interested in developing he could be the next big snack
of course it is just my opinion

  • westcoasteeler

    “Short area plugger”= huge

  • Weiss Chad

They gave an a plus on the pick .I know nothing about this guy honestly

  • joeyp

From what I have seen when he wants it he can dominate 2 to 3 guys at a time. Just wasn’t always consistent. As a true freshman he showed up over 400 lbs. He plays between 350 and 370 now

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

    Thanks for shsring

  • nato762

    Jeff janis still out there…

  • joeyp

no problem we are all hear for the same thing.

  • nato762

    George Atkinson RB

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

Last but not least the pittsburgh steelers select…..

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

    Roberson

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

    Blanchflower te

  • Jason Vancil

I am usually not this positive, but I can’t remember a draft class I have been this happy with in a long time.

  • Jason Vancil

What is wrong with Rashaad Reynolds? I thought this guy was a 3-4th rounder.

  • cp72

If I am a free agent corner I am signing quickly with Pittsburgh.

  • Jason Vancil

Ike, Cortez, Will Gay, Brice McCain, Shaq Richardson. Maybe 1 spot available

  • James Kling

YES. I hope we can snag him as a FA, he’s smart, fundamentally solid, where are the holes in his game?

  • James Kling

I think you & I are the exceptions!

  • Brian Miller

I agree…I think this if the first time in many years I am happy about the draft…

  • Jason Vancil

So be it. I think they got great value.

  • Brian Miller

So if the coaching staff feel that Zumwalt and Shazier are both ILBs, what kind of depth do we have at OLB? That worries me…

  • Jason Vancil

Chris Carter is it as far as guys actually listed as OLB. In other words, not much.

  • steeltown

Arthur Moats, Chris Carter and Vic So’oto… so basically Arthur Moats.

Im alittle surprised that we didn’t select a DE/OLB

  • Jason Vancil

    I Forgot about Moats

  • steeltown

I think they like Antwon Blake

  • WilliamSekinger

NFL network has been on the ‘NFL must be homophobic’ if Sam isn’t drafted. Its really sad. They are actually counting down the last picks in the context of Sam still being available and why hasn’t a team drafted him.

  • Jason Vancil

Jackson Jeffcoat, Rashad Reynolds, etc are better players. Some guys just go undrafted. I can assure anyone it is about his ability. If he were a stud he would be picked regardless of sexual orientation.

  • Jason Vancil

LOL and there ya go. Michael Sam to the Rams.

  • WilliamSekinger

Haha 30 secs after I post Sam is taken. At least I don’t have to hear that storyline for the next month.

  • Jason Vancil

    Jackson Jeffcoat as an UDFA?

  • WilliamSekinger

Crazy right? Still 7 more picks…

  • steeltown

Oh man, could I be that excited for a UDFA???….. yes

  • Brian Miller

Thanks…the fact that Chris Carter is even in the discussion REALLY scares me…

  • Brian Miller

Are you the Steeler’s fan that lives in Seattle? How do you think the Seahawks did in the draft?

  • steeltown

Nope not me.. I don’t know yet, I haven’t really checked on anyone outside our division

  • Matt Manzo

Happy born day hope you enjoy it

  • Richard Edlin

The Dave-Te interview was fun to listen to again. Our second round pick is lazy and our fourth is on his way to jail.

If we’d followed his advice we could have used up multiple picks on guys that are currently unsigned and who nobody else wanted.

Possible priority free agents as per that interview:

Howard Jones (DE), Denicus Allen (OLB), Bennie Fowler (WR), Clarke Annen, Joe Don Duncan, Marchel Jensen and Jordan Najvar (TE), Kelcy Quarles (our “third round pick”, DT), and LaDarius Perkins (RB). To be fair to him, some of those players were projected to go much earlier although many were very likely to be undrafted.

  • Matt Manzo

    Cherry on top!

  • Matt Manzo

I think we’re not afraid of risk anymore!

  • Matthew Suloman

    This was a great draft

  • Richard Edlin

Of these, Howard Jones is signed as a free agent post-draft.

  • Carol Mazzola-Whiteman

What is wrong with the Steelers? We went years without addressing the OL and we suffered. Now we’re going to ignore the CB position. We draft other OLB that we’re going to move inside that wasn’t a major need as CB was. Then we waist a 3rd pick on a RB when WR or other CBcould’ve been had. Another year of waisted talented being selected to sit for a couple years while teams in our conf and div great better. Nice job

  • James Miles

Dan McCullers?????? Are you kidding me???? Don’t you all think Shade tree is tooooooo damn fat to play the position? My God, these are supposed to be well conditioned athletes, not tubby two by fours who can fit through the kitchen door. What a disastrous pick. This Steeler pick makes me sick!!!!!!

  • Matt Manzo

Who are the ten udfas? I only saw Mauro and Jones listed!

  • shawn

    Yup ..

  • shawn

ya that sucked … was hoping to at least get cockrell

  • shawn

Seriously how is that even possible …. he’s almost a foot shorter … that is INSANE .. he has the same stride length … crazy … u forgot to mention that not only is it the same stride length as Calvin Johnson, but it so happens to be the record at the combine for fewest steps for the 40 !

  • shawn

He is actually growing on me now … like the pick … good value … no doubt he is a play maker with explosiveness .. is he super raw YES … and he is far from a complete WR .. but he should make Big Plays from Day one .. think he will fit as a perfect role player ( Big Plays … 3rd/4th Wr to complement our main guys AB & Wheaton … will do a good job of taking pressure off them ) !

  • shawn

would love Brown to win that one …. we would have 2 big guys with one being explosive and one being more of a possession move the chains type …. like it !

  • shawn

lol… true .. i dont want to see him again in another pre season !

  • shawn

Brown will be Browns … that is why sometimes we get caught up & over hyped about talent and forget that character is a big part of a teams fate!

the browns have a nack of finding ways to F$%# everything up … they finally catch a break with the best WR in the league … and now this …

  • Weiss Chad

He is starting to grow on me also. I’m always gonna root for any player in black and gold.If he can even become an impact player 2 yrs from now would be great.Brown,Wheaton,Bryant .i concur

  • Weiss Chad

You don’t take a guy based on a need if u don’t think he is gonna help you. They know they need a cb.They did their homework on just about all of them

  • shawn

initially before the draft I got caught up comparing him to guys like Matthews & Adams which of course he doesnt do favourably … but i think that was a mistake as i should only value him as a big play maker and role guy instead of an all around player ( We needed a Big WR playmaker & we got one … AB & Wheaton will do the heavy lifting so to speak … so no worries on that … plus he was a late 4th round pick .. not 2nd/3rd where he was projected to go …so definitely like the pick now !

  • Weiss Chad

I think they got him at the perfect spot.Im really gonna get as much tape as possible on him and figure it out. I’m glad they went archer then Bryant cause I doubt Archer would have been there if they did it other way around. This lineman from Vanderbilt is growing on me.If you never been flagged for holding, that just shows good technique .His position flexibility sticks out in my mind.

  • shawn

that is a pretty amazing stat ….. 2 holds playing every position in 4 years of starting … very impressive indeed .. not to mention only giving up 7 sacks in the SEC over that time span

  • Weiss Chad

Shmarko is a wild card right now .He can always play cb as he does in sup packages right now if need be

  • Matt Manzo

There’s a lot I like about Zumwalt but I’m confused by the pick? With Shazier and VWilliams and Spence we’ve got some depth.
I thought maybe he’d play OLB but it sounds like the team wants him inside?
Does anyone have a good reason?

  • Weiss Chad

Good follow up.That dude could sell ice to Eskimos in the winter. He has wonderful scouting reports and mad respect to him for that

  • Weiss Chad

I wanna see tape against clowney

  • Weiss Chad

Will take a safety roster spot though
