2014 Steelers 53 Man Roster Prediction – Post Draft

With the 2014 NFL Draft now behind us, it’s time for my first offseason 53 man roster prediction for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to get all of these right, but this is where my head is at after the selection of nine players by the Steelers over the course of the weekend.

In the comments below, tell me the selections you disagree with and which player makes it instead. How many of these 53 are locks?

As you can see, there are several roster spots that are wide open.

Offense (25)

Quarterbacks (3)Ben Roethlisberger, Bruce Gradkowski, Landry Jones

Analysis: This group is pretty easy to nail down.

Running Backs (3)Le’Veon Bell, LeGarrette Blount, Dri Archer

Analysis: These three are givens. Can Alvester Alexander show he is special teams worthy enough to become a fourth?

Fullbacks (1)Will Johnson

Analysis: Hard to bet against Johnson right now.

Wide Receivers (5)Antonio Brown, Markus Wheaton, Lance Moore, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Martavis Bryant

Analysis: Four of these five seem to be set. Can Derek Moye beat out Heyward-Bey on special teams?

Tight Ends (4)Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth, Michael Palmer, Rob Blanchflower

Analysis: Is this the end for David Paulson? Blanchflower needs to show he can stay healthy and can contribute on special teams.

Offensive Line (9)Maurkice Pouncey, David DeCastro, Ramon Foster, Marcus Gilbert, Mike Adams, Kelvin Beachum, Cody Wallace, Nik Embernate, Guy Whimper

Analysis: Wesley Johnson has to show that Whimper is expendable. Embernate has to show that he is healthy and can play both guard spots. Seven of these nine appear to be locks.

Defense (25)

Defensive Lineman (6)Steve McLendon, Cameron Heyward, Cam Thomas, Stephon Tuitt, Nick Williams, Hebron Fangupo

Analysis: Will a seventh be kept? Can Daniel McCullers show enough to make Fangupo expendable? What about Brian Arnfelt? Four of these players are locks and there is a lot of uncertainty past them.

Inside Linebackers (4)Lawrence Timmons, Ryan Shazier, Vince Williams, Jordan Zumwalt

Analysis: Can Sean Spence make it back? Moats can serve as a backup inside guy.

Outside Linebackers (5)Jarvis Jones, Jason Worilds, Chris Carter, Arthur Moats, James Harrison

Analysis: Yeah, I went there with Harrison for now. Where will the depth come from? Even if Zumwalt can play some outside, you really have to wonder about the depth past Jones and Worilds. This is scary. If they don’t sign Harrison, could another currently unsigned free agent with experience be added? Can Joey Porter still play? (kidding)

Cornerbacks (6)Ike Taylor, Cortez Allen, William Gay, Brice McCain, Shaquille Richardson, Antwon Blake

Analysis: Hopefully Richardson makes it. As far as Blake goes, he’s a great special teams player that can probably also play some safety. Can Robert Golden beat him out? Will both he and Blake make it?

Safeties (4)Troy Polamalu, Mike Mitchell, Shamarko Thomas, Will Allen

Analysis: Mike Tomlin loves Allen. Will that love last one more year? Thomas also can function as a slot dime back. Golden is a big wildcard here.

Specialists (3)

Kicker (1)Shaun Suisham

Analysis: Duh, for now!

Punter (1)Brad Wing

Analysis: Wing has to beat out his demons and veteran Adam Podlesh.

Long Snapper (1)Greg Warren

Analysis: I bet against Warren last year and I won’t do it again.

  • steeltown

Think you meant FB Will Johnson

  • ApexSteel

Seeing the potential roster on paper is an extremely ugly experience.

  • srdan

-I think the new DT over fangupo. At the very least he offers situational help in short yardage plays.
-Our receivers look lethal on paper. Mann up!
-We need more competition at corner.
-I agree on the Harrison signing (for the third time?)
-Fingers crossed for Spence. Could be another great addition to situational football

  • srdan

I couldn’t disagree with you more.

  • steeltown

I mostly agree, the ILB and DL position battles are going to interesting, same goes for the Whimper /W.Johnson battle. If C.Thomas can backup McLendon at NT then I would not risk losing Arnfelt and would keep him over Fangupo

  • Paddy

I think they will pick up some more free agents for the Oline as camps break up.

  • Paddy

    It’s scary

  • Paddy

Can they get to 9-7 with that group and sneak into the playoffs?

  • Steelers12328882

Exactly what I was going to say.

  • ApexSteel

All these unproven players make you confident?

  • Rob Erickson

Fangupo is 29 and has yet to get any significant playing time. Unless the challengers are really lacking, they will go with youth and coach them up…you have to consider Fangupo at the top of his game by now sadly

  • Brian Tollini

My dark horse is someone you didn’t mention-Tauren Poole-RB. He is someone I really liked coming out of Tennessee he ran into some injuries in Carolina and never made it far.

  • srdan

It’s probably a personality difference between you and me. I’m an optimist. When I see names that our FO drafted I give them the benefit of the doubt.
What most fans don’t realize is that proven players cost money. Young proven players cost way more. So your choices are:
-Pay young proven FA’s (steelers do one of these players a decade.
-Sign people in their twilight years (Steelers stay away from this unless they were drafted by the organization previously)
-Develop players through the drafting process (cha-ching!!!)

We are young. At one point the hamptons, bens, aarons and hines were young and unproven. Our FO proved that it can mold clay into champions. So to answer your question, yes I’m very excited and confident.

  • Kenneth Wilt

Well, I think for the most part, you identified the players who have the best shot at making the roster. I don’t think Harrison is brought back, but I think it is possible Velasco is given a shot on the Oline after he recovers. I worry about our OLB depth. I don’t like Carter and I don’t think Harrison should be on the list. That leaves Moats and I honestly think that Zumwalt needs to be looked at there. His tape to me shows those kind of skills, but needing to add some bulk to stand up against the run. I could see him being a great pass rusher out of that spot.

  • steeltown

I sort of like him too, but I think he and Alexander will battle it out for a spot on the practice squad, unless maybe we only keep 3TEs this year which would allow us to carry 4RBs

  • Matt Manzo

I agree! I think because Thomas can play DT and DE he will get Woods snaps meaning Fangupo would be inactive all year again. So I think Mcullers has a very good chance of beating out Fangupo. We don’t really need Fangupo. But later we might need Mcullers.

  • srdan

C’mon man. A team that finished the year 8-4 following a dismal start that started running the ball, lost no key free agents got younger and faster.

  • steeltown

Eventually yes I could see that, he’d have to pack on 10-15lbs though

  • steeltown

So you’d rather have guys like Hood, Clark, Sanders and Foote back on roster?

  • chris ward

The OLB depth behind Jarvis and Worilds, is concerning. Makes me nervous if Worilds or Jarvis go down with an injury at some point during the season.

  • srdan

Please remember that this roster is in the hands of maybe the top coaching staff in teh league.

  • steeltown

Im coming around to the notion of bringing in Harrison, as a backup, with Moats

  • joed32

I like Justin Brown as well and maybe more than Moye, better hands.

  • Matt Manzo

No way Carter makes the team! We’ve moved on from everyone else, it’s his time soon. I think we sign another OLB and Carter walks. Or HJones beats him out? Anyone’s better than Carter. I’d rather have Thad Gibson or ARobinson back there!

  • Eric MacLaurin

I would let Allen go rather than lose someone else for his swan song.

Fangupo would also go. McCullers would have to earn it but fango has earned the right to stay home.

I agree Harrison or someone a little better as an OLB BU would be a good idea.

  • shawn

There is no way they would keep 4 TEs and not Spence if he is even remotely able to play !

dont think harrison or fangupo will be on board …

doubt hey ward bey or Moye make it … have a hunch justin brown sneaks in over both of them

Think Isiah green gets the nod over one of the last 3 CBs he has

unfortunately Will Allen & Chris Carter will prob stick … should have taken a late flier on a new FS or OLB

  • dave

It’s not scary, just new. More size and speed.

  • ApexSteel

All I needed was a yes or no, but whatever. I’m not saying they’re going to be good or bad so let’s get that out the way early. I’m saying that the roster looks ugly. It’s full of potential which is always exciting, but it’s also dangerous. We have no idea about a lot how a lot of these player will perform on an NFL field.

  • ApexSteel

    Did I say that?

  • shawn

They were 8-8 last year … on paper we have gotten a lot better … at this point its all about how they gel … but the talent is there … could easily go 10-6 if not better if they start off well … i think the key is that OL and how they come together quickly and if they resume their good play at last seasons end !

  • Eric MacLaurin

You don’t think a 10 year old in a comment section should be so sure he knows more than Tomlin?

You might not know how many hours a day some of these guys spend in a basement researching unqualified opinions to make these dramatic conclusions.

    Show some respect!

  • Eric MacLaurin

Some people get very scared by new things and need to see it work before they can trust it.

  • ApexSteel

    Thank you.

  • Eric MacLaurin

You seem very concerned that the team got rid of their worst players from an 8 and 8 team and replaced them with younger, faster players.

That would seem to indicate you prefer the players who are proven to not be very good over the players that have shown they might be really good but have not yet played a game as a Steeler.

I think a normal person gets excited by the draft.

  • srdan

I think last year I would have told you differently. I was not excited about the talent on our Dline. Heading into the year we were hanging our hat on Hood and Kiesel. Hayward and Mac were the unknowns. I look at those two today, and see a probowler and someone that is very good. Throw in the two freaks they drafted and I could see our Dline being solid once again.
Two years ago we lacked speed, everywhere. Last year we lacked speed in the secondary. That was addressed by Mitchel and hopefully one of the corners steps up.
Last year we were hurt by tightends. This year we have someone that was born to cover tightends in the NFL.
Since Plax left we have had not red zone WR presence. The draft analysts say that Bryant may have been the steal of the draft. I take it with a grain of salt but i can’t help but get excited about him.
Sometimes i’m like a broken record, but ill repeat it again. I considered this offseason a success when Worldis was signed and Woodley released. The rest is icing for me (exaggeration). But some may call 93 unproven and 56 proven.

  • Eric MacLaurin

Just because you don’t know how to extrapolate talent doesn’t mean it can’t be done. The Steelers employ a lot of people that can do that.

You don’t have to trust them but to act like it is impossible to do just because you can’t is incorrect.

  • Bill Sechrengost

I agree with the number of players per position except I think they will have 7 DL and 5 CB’s. I think McCain will not make the team and that Arnfelt will make the team. As always, injuries will play a part in the final decisions. Someone could surprise, too, like Josh Mauro. I also worry about the depth at both OLB and CB. If one of our starters gets hurt at those positions, it will be tough.

  • srdan

But as a clarification, I am not only referring to Tomlin. Munchak and Haley were both head coaches. Butler maybe the most sought after DC in the league every year. Mann and Mitchel are regarded as some of the best at what they do. Oh and that old DC walking around the halls of the Southside facility reading The Night before Christmas.

  • ApexSteel

I don’t see how you can to that conclusion… I said the roster looked ugly on paper. Then made a comment about how we have a lot of unproven players. I’m not going to say we’re better or worse because I haven’t seen them play. But the roster, when I’m looking at the NAMES(not the measurables or the film) looks ugly. I’m sorry that i’m not ready to call Shazier the Defensive Rookie of the Year before he even stretched at rookie mini camp.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

Guy Whimper is 6’5″, 315 pounds, and has very limited mobility and versatility.
Wesley Johnson is 6’5″ 300 pounds, with great mobility and versatility.
It makes no sense to keep Whimper unless Johnson falls on face in camp.

My early prognostication on D-Line is that we keep 7 guys.
    Tuitt – McLendon – Heyward – Thomas – Arnfelt – Williams – McCullers
In my opinion you don’t keep Fangupo over McCullers. It’s about upside.

Hopefully Podlesh beats out Wing. But I don’t care. May the best man win.

I have no idea what they’re doing at LB. We are stacked at ILB and very VERY thin at OLB. Besides that I agree with the rest of the prediction.

  • blackandgoldBullion

Barring a slew of injuries, I disagree slightly. Moye and Spence can no longer go on the practice squad. Make or break for them. If Moye put on 10 pounds of muscle in the off season, he will be able to outmuscle the DB’s and might make it. Justin Brown to the practice squad. Moye and Heyward-Bey battle it out.

I hope Whimper gets beat out by anybody.

Carter will get cut, even if they have to resort to signing someone after the last cuts in September, as there are always some decent players that are cut and can be signed on the cheap. The FO better save some money for that. Harrison is still an outside shot, but maybe one of the new guys shows enough position flexibility that they end up keeping 6 ILB’s.

    Bye-bye Fangupo. Hello Man-Mountain McCullers.

McCain gets cut as they may only keep 9 DB’s. Why? Because with Shazier’s speed you will see less dime and quarters. That extra spot goes to an OLB off the street or Harrison.

Arnfelt makes it or some one will scoop him up off the practice squad. Nick Williams goes to the practice squad because he should be safe there coming off the big injury.

And there’s still tons of stuff up in the air.

  • ApexSteel

What part of “It’s full of potential which is always exciting, but it’s also dangerous. We have no idea about how a lot of these players will perform on an NFL field.” led you to believe that I think it’s impossible? Take your Yinzer glasses off and read what I said.

  • Jacob Dixon

How about we keep one of our best special teamers in Robert Golden

  • John C

Looks about right with Wesley Johnson and McCullers on practice squad…..I sure hope there is room for Spence, Williams and Zumwalt….maybe Zumwalt as OLB depth and cut Carter. Also, would really like to see Moye step up but doesn’t seem like the team has a lot of faith in him.

  • steeltown

I agree with the Spence comment, especially considering W.Johnson could play TE in a pinch. Im not sure Green makes the 53man as much as I like him, he is not known for his special teams play, he seems more destined for the PS again

  • dennisdoubleday

I don’t think Chris Carter makes it again; Zumwalt and Shazier have position versatility for depth. I hope Spence makes it, but I doubt it. I doubt they bring Harrison back; looks like they’ve decided to break into a new era.

Arnfelt and McCullers will both be kept, over Fangupo.

  • Jeff Anoble

If Heyward Bey has any drops in pre-season that will be it for him.

All McCullers has to do to make the team is walk through the front door. (if he can fit) No way will they give up on that size, strength (27 bench) and he has speed (5.3- 40). This I think will be a huge hit of a pick for us. Fangupo is going to be 29 years old this summer.

I think Wesley Johnson is a hand picked Munchak pick. His versatility and surprise play will have him on the roster. I think this is a better Kelvin Benjamin.

God if Chris Carter ends up on this roster one more time…..Try anyone there and they will be better then him. Terrance Garvin, even Zumwalt. Anyone. Howard Jones step it up, a opportunity really exists.

  • Bradys_Dad

The only change I’d see as a real possibility is that McCullers beats out Fangupo for a spot. Maybe not. Maybe McCullers makes it to the practice squad assuming no one grabs him.

  • Eric Green

I would say your 80% correct with your predictions , Id go a little different way in few positions
This is what I see panning out by September

    1. Sean spence > jordan Zumwalt (spence- better special teams player, could get on field for sub packages if he can still cover)
    2. Wesley johnson> guy whimper ( wesley is a better fit for zone blocking scheme I believe)

    3. Brian Arnfelt > Nick Williams ( Arnfelt takes that next stride in yr 2 and shares snaps with stephon)
4.Daniel mcCullers > Fangupo ( I believe they keep McCullers if he shows he can keep his weight down and stay healthy over camp ,view him as upside project)
    5. I think Chris carter days are over
    6. I do believe we sign Harrison for a year (I WOULD!)

  • steeltown

No you didn’t. I think we have a nice mix of youth and experience

  • Mark Petraglia

I think Fangupo and Whimper will not make the team. I also question if Adams makes it unless it is at right tackle. I am excited about the new makeup of this team and think they will create a new defense to help combat the lack of depth at the outside linebacker position.

  • Kevin Gobleck

I mostly agree expect i say Chris Carter will finally get cut and Zumwalt can serve as both LB’s as moats which with could also then open up a spot for Spence, I’ll also say that McCullers will beat out Fangupo, and that Johnson beats out Whimper

  • steeltown

If you would have told me at the end of last season that we would have LeGarrette Blount and Dri Archer backing up Le’Veon Bell next year, I would not have believed you for a second… I still dont really believe it

    Agreed…Go Steelers!

  • Where’s the dude that was pimping Stedman Bailey? Just got popped for violating the substance abuse policy.

    QB-Easy Call
    RB-Another Easy Call
WR-Brown, Wheaton, Moore, Bryant, Moye *Heyward Bey-is nothing but a decoy*
    TE-Miller, Spaeth, Palmer, Blanchflower
OL-Bye Whimpie, we hardly knew ye
    DL-Fanguapo-see ya!

    P-Podlesh simply veteran.

    Everyone else agree with you.

  • Relax, they had to get younger at some point.

  • So, you would rather they have the over the hill gang like Oakland?

  • ApexSteel

I swear to God it’s like you guys don’t even read what people say. I’m not in anyway making a guess as to how the team will perform and I’m not saying I want the team to be older. I just said there is a lot of unproven talent on the team. That’s it. I don’t get how that turned into “WHERE ARE ALL MY 30+ players?”

  • Danny Delouize

    Chris Carter stinks…

  • Danny Delouize

They also need to get another kicker…Atleast bring in a decent one to compete with Sean Shushi..

  • Danny Delouize

This roster looks a little light on special team players…

  • Danny Delouize

All they really lost this offseason is dead weight players…

  • Danny Delouize

i thought whimpers play last season wasn’t that bad..

  • Krankor

ApexSteel: Well, *I*, at least, get what you’re saying. I had the same experience. There’s just an awful lot of question marks. They may all work out great, and nobody is pointing a finger at any in particular and saying they *won’t* be great. But there’s a lot of risk there. A good example is outside ‘backer: Worilds and Jones had *better* be great– and injury free– because there’s really *nothing* behind them.

  • D.j. Hoy

I don’t know how Spence would be the odd man out. The dude had the physical tools to do so in his rookie year and he has had 2 years to learn the defense in meetings. As long as his knee can hold up (I’m assuming it will since he got the green light during the regular season) I think he will be Shazier’s main competition for the starting job opposite Timmons.

I can’t wait to visit Latrobe to see these young guys flying around trying to make an impression.

  • Melly

4 TEs? Plz not again!! I don’t want to see Carter on this team. I’d rather they sign Harrison to a 1 yr deal, AND use the position “flexibility” w/ a younger guy to fill the void! I’d rather have potential(McCullers) vs boredom(Fang). I’m rooting hard for Spence and Arnfelt!

  • gene mann

sorry i think Arfeldt has a step up on Williams

Remember when there was talk of making him a Safety? If he has recuperated 100%, there is room on the roster for him to do something. Too much football talent.

If you think seeing the potential roster on paper is an extremely ugly experience, wait until you see the Practice Squad.

  • Agustin-ARG

    Spence + 52
    Make it happen Sean!!

  • Dennis

Out with the old and in with the New (and Young and fast)
Palmer, Whimper, Harrison, Allen, and Fang out
Arfeldt, Wesley Johnson, spence, Golden and McCullers in
Shazier, Moats and Zumwalt can all play OLB.
Not completely sold on McCain making the team maybe Allen gets another year here?

  • Dennis

create a new defense????? Are you out of your mind?????
LBs are the stable of this defense for years nothing is changing. Moats, Shazier and Zumwalt can handle OLB and ILB duties. and Harrison can get signed in an emergency. The only way Carter gets cut is if Harrison signs. Harrison can not play special teams.

  • Dennis

  • Bartholomew Wimer

We should sign RB Ryan Williams. He can keep Dri Archer company in the trainers room!… Seriously though, I hope we sign him and they both stay healthy. They would be some explosive back ups.

  • Rubem Dornas

Is there any NFL team that don’t have a specific Long Snapper? I mean, to me this is a player that could be totally substituted by another player, maybe an OL. Am I becoming crazy or there was a rumor that Beachum was training LS?

  • RedCarpetDefense

Make Fangupo the FB and move Will Johnson to OLB.

  • Jim Mathiot

I predict McCullers makes the team

  • Steelers12328882

    That’s a mature reply.

  • NW86

Hard to put up a real strong argument against those picks this early, and I understand why you are penciling in some of the incumbents until we start hearing more from the rookies in training camp. But if I were predicting this I would have left out Heyward-Bey, Blanchflower, Whimper, Fangupo, Nick Williams, and Harrison, and instead included Justin Brown, Golden (11th DB instead of 4th TE), Wes Johnson, McCullers, Arnfelt, and Spence (5th ILB instead of 5th OLB). Blanchflower and Nick Williams would make the PS.

  • Eric MacLaurin

The part where you said “we have no idea”

Don’t you know what that means? It means you don’t think that we as a group have any idea if the guys can play.

When you say we don’t have any idea what do you think you are allowing for the ability to predict fit and skill level.

  • Mark Davis

Here is my 53 man roster prediction. For Punter and the last WR spot i have many names and i’m not sure who will make it, but i would be happy with any of them.

  • ApexSteel

When I say we have no idea I mean we have no idea. That’s it. And if you do please tell me. If you can give me their snap counts and their stats please do. My God why are you reading so deep into this?

A lot of people had Markus Wheaton the next Mike Wallace and Jarvis Jones as someone who would have more than one sack, but they didn’t. At the same time not too many people had Kelvin Beachum as our eventual starting LT when he was drafted. You never know where exactly your team’s production will come from that’s why the call the draft a gamble. You can make as educated of a guess as you want, but YOU DON’T KNOW.

  • blackandgoldBullion

And just in case Johnson and Brown don’t make it they still have practice squad eligibility

  • Eric MacLaurin

I see. You mean you have no idea what any of his exact numbers will be.

I think the problem is vocabulary. No idea and don’t know have different meanings with no idea meaning you have no idea what the player could do. Not that you don’t know what his exact snap count will be.

If you had said you were worried because you had no idea I wouldn’t have said anything.

When you said you were worried because we have no idea it seemed to indicate that we as a team don’t know if the people we just drafted have the skill we need.

I think the team knows enough to know how these guys fit.

Drafting a player you need to develop is an unknown but not all players require development of skills that make the difference between their success and failure a question.

  • Riverstko

Not bad my list was similar, but instead of Blake i had Golden rather go with 5cbs 5 safeties. Arnett as the 4thDE and McCullers in the middle. Believe me we will need that BIG BODY

  • Jason Vancil

Heres hoping Josh Mauro makes it somehow. At least to the PS.

I think Wesley Johnson makes the team.

Bryant is a lock. He has too much talent, and will get scooped up in a heartbeat. If he went back to Clemson this year he could be a 1st rounder in 15′.

    should of kept Ta’amu.

We are in sub-packages more than the 34. They have lots of options on who they rush out of the nickel. I think they like to run the 2-4-5 with four linebackers, but if say Jarvis gets injured they could switch to a 3-3-5 front. With Heyward and Tuitt being good pass rushers they have versatility. With Hood gone McClendon will be getting snaps in the sub-packages as well. So the 3 man front would be Steve, Heyward, Tuitt with Shazier, Timmons, and Worilds as your backers. Plus, they could run the big nickel with a four man front.

So I’m not too worried about the OLB depth. Yes it would suck for to have Carter in the base D, but were not in it all that much, and the Steelers should practice running the 43 in case that happens. All this talk of players being versatile, it’s time for the coaches to be.

Well 18 receivers were taken in the draft before him. 18! There’s something about him that most teams didn’t like, and although I would agree he’s athletically talented and is probably a lock just because of where he was drafted, there’s no way I would agree he’d be drafted in rd. 1 next year, and I also don’t think the Steelers will just hand him the job over Moye, Brown and possibly DHB.

This was a very deep WR class. Any other year he goes earlier. Just last year cordell Patterson went in the first and he was even more raw than Bryant. bryant isn’t as polished As most of the WRs that came out this year and Sammy Watkins caught a lot of balls. As of now bryant is a one year wonder that is raw. If he went back to school without Watkins being there he would put up some big numbers. Very good chance he would in the 1st in 15′. I was not a fan of taking Bryant this year because most were talking 2nd round. But 4th round makes sense and as for DHB…..please. He’s a castoff that nobody wants. I hope Moye or justin brown make the team over him.

Well I wouldn’t call him a one year wonder. He’s logged stats the last 3 years for Clemson, but he did have great players in his way like Watkins, DeAndre Hopkins, Jaron Brown and Dwayne Allen at TE taking away opportunities from him. Still, you could say any receiver would be taken higher in a draft where’s there’s not such a good group at the position. Doesn’t make him any better of a player then he is. The 19 receiver taken in the draft. Hard to call that a lock even if it is. He’s got his work cut out for him even trying to beat out a castoff receiver like DHB. You can’t compare Patterson either. He’s an offensive weapon and returner as well as a receiver.
