A Five Year Look At Fifth-Round Draft Picks

In response to my Monday post on past fifth-round picks made by the Pittsburgh Steelers during the Kevin Colbert era, a few of you wondered what percentage of all fifth-round picks across the league wind up making their respective teams’ 53 man roster out of training camp.

I went all the way back to 2009 and had a look at every player drafted in the fifth-round to see whether or not they made the final 53 man roster as rookies, and the results are pretty surprising.

From 2009-2013 there were a total of 178 players drafted in the fifth round and 124 of those players (69.7%) wound up making the 53 man roster for the season opener. Only 27 players (15.2%), were waived by the team that drafted them prior to the season opener.

As for the other 27 players, 19 were placed on injured reserve, four were placed on reserve PUP, three were placed on the non football injury list and one, Hall Davis, was traded prior to the first week of the season.

As far as the Steelers fifth-round selections go dating back to 2009, of the eight players they drafted, only one, Terry Hawthorne, was waived outright prior to the start of the season. Six of the remaining seven made the final 53 man roster and the remaining player, Chris Scott, started his rookie season on the reserve PUP list.

This year, the Steelers drafted cornerback Shaquille Richardson and offensive lineman Wesley Johnson in the fifth-round, so odds are good that both will make the final 53 man roster out of training camp baring an injury.

I plan on looking at the sixth-round picks dating back to 2009 as part of my next study.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

That’s a lot of work. Thanks.

Any chance both Wesley Johnson and Guy Whimper make the team? There seems to be 7 locks, so that would mean 9 O-lineman on the 53.

  • Paddy

Dave should be known as “La Machine”

  • shawn

wow … u got a lot of free time on your hand !

  • DoctorNoah

Thanks for the analysis! Glad at least that I could pose an interesting question!

  • shawn

    ya i know … I’m just sayin !

  • Kenneth Wilt

I honestly would be more curious as to how many of these guys made it past year 1. Some teams, especially the really bad ones, almost have no choice but to keep these guys as they are better than what they currently have. The next year when they make an upgrade, how many of them still make it?
