The Chicago Bears were the only team to select a punter during the 2014 NFL Draft and as a result, it looks like punter Drew Butler will be released soon.
Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune reports Sunday afternoon that the Bears plan on cutting Butler now that the rookie camp has wrapped up.
The Bears drafted Miami punter Pat O’Donnell in the sixth-round of last weekend’s draft and with two other punters already on their roster, it looks like Butler will be the odd man out. The Bears other punter currently under contract is Tress Way, who was with the team last year in training camp.
Butler broke into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2012, but after a dismal rookie season, he was released prior to the start of the 2013 season. The Bears signed Butler to a reserve/futures contract back in January.
Butler’s father, Kevin Butler, was the Bears placekicker for 11 seasons from 1985-1995. He was part of the Bears Super Bowl XXÂ winning team as a rookie.
