Steelers Decide Not To Sign Any Of The 20 Players Brought In For Tryouts

By the looks of things, there will not be a 2014 version of Terence Garvin for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

While the Steelers did invite 20 unsigned undrafted players to their rookie minicamp for tryouts that took place over weekend, none impressed enough to warrant being signed, according to Bob Labriola of Steelers Digest.

Last year, Garvin, an undrafted free agent out of West Virginia, was signed to the Steelers 90 man roster after impressing the coaches during his rookie minicamp tryout.

Garvin went on to make the Steelers 53 man roster out of training camp and dressed for 15 games during his rookie season. That feat won’t likely be topped for a long time, if ever.

Does that include the udfas? Guys like HJones, Dorian Bell?

  • CW

No they brought in twenty additional rookies for tryouts. So they had the 9 draftees, the ten UDFAs, and 20 tryout rookies in addition to everyone else at this first activity.

So they aren’t signing Toler… I have to say I’m very disappointed, but I guess he didn’t do enough to get their attention… A shame he looked great in game films… I wonder if they even looked at the tape… smh

  • SteelersDepot

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that somebody looked at his tape.

  • RMSteeler

May be a couple on speed dial for later on if they don’t sign elsewhere. Should be a bunch of vets released after June 1. Should be an interesting second round of free agency. Doubt the Steelers are very active, but it’s been a strange off season so far.

  • GoSteelerz

Well, I can’t imagine what they didn’t like… But hey, they interacted with him personally, perhaps they just didn’t like him on that level…

  • Madi

I don’t like to sound braggy, but I’m actually a friend of a friend of Tomlin’s, and it’s funny you mention Toler because the way I heard it, they almost drafted him in the 7th round, but at the last minute decided he’d be easier to sign undrafted than Branchflower. They really did LOVE his tape, but he’s got some kind of abrasive personality or something (I didn’t get the details), and they figured the best he could do is nickelback anyway, so not worth the risk of locker room problems. Hope that helps.

Glad did not seem to be any big names that seemed promising.I rather see them sign Harrision for backup OLB and Keisel for a rotational guy.

It seems that the competitiveness bar for Steelers camp has finally been raised; with a ton of more boom-or-bust type vets signed during free agency (think 5th round and later risk wise, but with NFL-veteran grit and determination not to get jettisoned from the league already at this stage) to compete against our 10 draft picks (yes, counting Spence), and the now the very unlikely to male the roster UDFA pool.

I think that this will give the team countless vicious camp battles, which will in turn make each one of our 53, stronger, better, faster, and I believe our toughness attitude will emerge again! And of course we have the added luxury for the first time in quite awhile to spend on anybody that makes it to the market before the first game that we’ve been eyeing.

I would love to hear Troy’s thoughts after a couple of practices with all of that new speed on the field in front of him on both sides of the ball.

    Go Steelers!

  • GoSteelerz

It does help… What a shame, he has potential, but can’t get out of his own way… Hope he takes a hard look at himself and makes that adjustment… Then comes back to us to try again…

  • stellarsfan

Can you tell coach Tomlin to accept my friend request on Facebook?

  • nicolaisim

Damn it.. Was hoping for Jake DeMedal to compete in training camp

  • Mike Cardwell

Why? They need to get younger on defense and fast.

  • Mike Cardwell

Unless there is a no brainer No 1 these guys are clueless. I swear they have the worst O’ Line scouts in the NFL. Never have I seen so many busts. Someone eventually has to be accountable.

  • Alberto

Can you ask mike tomlin what really happened with keenan lewis?

  • steeltown

Because they didn’t sign any of these players? We already have 15-16 OL prospects on the 90man roster and 7 or 8 of them are locks

  • Guess Having the best O line coach in the NFL counts for nothing right. SHHH

  • John C

Exactly! I think our OL is pretty solid…expecting big things from these guys this year. The Munchattack!

  • John C

Dude…we are younger and faster on D….have you not been paying attention? Assuming Shazier and Tuitt start our avg age on D will be 26 and that is with Troy and Ike in there as the only players over 30. Also, backup Will Allen is the only other player on D over 30. The O has 6 guys over 30 on the roster assuming both Wimper and Cody Wallace make the team.

  • cencalsteeler

This should actually be great news. The Steelers feel confident with their current list of players and don’t have to reach into the barrel.

  • Shannon Stephenson

With how great of a feat that Garvin did last year he will be fighting for a roster spot this year.

  • Madi

    lol I was just kidding.

  • GoSteelerz

LOL Well it was comforting!!!! I can’t imagine what they didn’t like then, it might have been his personality, because he looked great on film…
