We will likely never know if the Pittsburgh Steelers had Virginia Tech cornerback Kyle Fuller rated higher than Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier, but being has general manager Kevin Colbert decided to pass on Michigan State cornerback Darqueze Dennard to take Shazier with the 15th overall selection in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, it’s a pretty good bet the Buckeye was the target all along.
“Ryan Shazier was someone we valued and valued very highly,” said Colbert during the post selection press conference.
The Steelers need for a young cornerback in this draft is an obvious one, yet Colbert stood by his decision to take the best player available over a need.
“We’re well aware of who we have on our team,” said Colbert. “But when we can add a player of quality, it will override the need at any time.”
In total, five cornerbacks were taken in the first round Thursday night, so it appears as though the Steelers will likely wait until round three or later to address that position.
The Steelers are scheduled to pick 14th overall in round two.
