Steelers Hope Tall WR Martavis Bryant Can Produce Cheap Touchdowns

Rejoice, rejoice, the Pittsburgh Steelers have gotten quarterback Ben Roethlisberger a “tall” wide receiver and he’s reportedly pleased with the Saturday selection of Clemson wide receiver Martavis Bryant in the 2014 NFL Draft.

So why is having a tall wide receiver such a big deal? Wide receivers coach Richard Mann shared his thoughts on the matter Saturday during his post selection press conference

“A lot of times, in my opinion, doesn’t mean I’m always right, you get cheap touchdowns in the red zone,” Mann reasoned. “A lot of times people know where the ball is going to go and there is nothing they can do about it if you got a mismatch. And that’s what we think we have here with the reach that he has, the wingspan. We feel like we can get some cheap touchdowns down there.”

Bryant, who the Steelers managed to select in the fourth round, has 32 5/8-inch arms and a 79-inch wingspan. In addition, his 39-inch vertical jump combined with the fact that he’s nearly 76-inches tall, gives him one heck of a catch radius.

During his three years at Clemson, Bryant only caught 61 passes for 1,354 yards, but 13 of those catches went for touchdowns. Only four of those were in the red zone, however, so he’s still got a lot to prove down in that part of the field. Bryant is confident that he will do just that.

“I bring a big threat in the red zone,” he said. “I’ll do anything they ask me to.”

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

He definitely has one heck of a catch radius … definitely see big plays in his future … not exactly sure how he stacks up in the RZ yet, but I’m sure we will find out soon enough …

I usually hate low % fade patterns in the RZ, but watching him on tape I have a feeling he will get plenty of chances and win his share of them … kind of reminds me (diff style but similar capabilities) of Alvin Harper who was solely a role WR but made a HUGE impact on that dynasty !

Dave had this guy in his first mock draft in round 4. That’s where they got him. RZ could have Bryant with Moye Heath and the other 6’7″ TE. I’m still hungover. Who do you cover and how? Excellent.

  • StrengthOfVictory

Moye has his work cut out for him. He only makes the team in 2014 as a fifth receiver if he beats out DHB and Justin Brown.

  • Rod Hedrick

    I think Moye is done.

  • KP

Why doesn’t Derek Moye get a decent shot too? He’s also 6’5″ and was clocked at a 4.4 at the combine. He also weighs 10 pounds more than Martavis Bryant. Why is he dismissed so much, if he’s similar to Bryant anyways? I haven’t seen enough of Moye to know– just a few games he was out there– so maybe there’s a big talent difference? Because the size and speed are very similar…

And no more practice squad eligibility.

I liked our draft but this part is a bit of a head scratcher to me. He had 60 catches in 3 years?

The reason I give us a B and not an A initially is we passed on a CB in the third to choose Archer ( To high by two rounds minimum in my opinion) and we’re excited to have Bryant who has 60 catches in three years but aren’t about a guy like Jeff Janis who the Packers got in the 7th round? 200 catches, 3000 yards and 31 TD’s in his last TWO years of college. 6’3″ and 219 lbs. He went to a small school but a 4.4 forty is fast for that big of a receiver regardless of the school you went to.

If I’m wrong about this point and only time will tell, I will gladly give our draft an A initially instead of the B I have awarded. Not that a B is a bad thing :)

  • Milliken Steeler

So do I. I think Justin Brown was going to pass him regardless of the Bryant signing anyway. Moye barely beat out Justin despite having a whole year of practice squad experience versus Brown being fresh out of college.

  • steelster

Bryant didn’t have a lot of production because he played behind Deandre Hopkins for 2 years. Hopkins was a first round draft choice. If Bryant would have stayed for his senior year he would have been a first or second round prospect for the 2015 draft. So the steelers got great draft value this year.

I just hope dri archer can get us some good yardage and ben can get bryant on a 10 yard play and he take it to the house so we don’t be relying so much our rz offense

  • Steelers@2010

Thank You! People, give the kid a chance. Obviously the Coaching Staff didn’t feel too comfortable with Moye or Justin Brown. If they did, I’m sure they wouldn’t have waisted a 4th RD pick on Bryant. But I still wish they would have taken Desir with that 3rd pick. Fans, just can’t please us all I guess.

  • Matt Manzo

I think Janis is gonna be great! I wanted him too!
I’m surprised we had a chance to get Desir, And Richardson and still could’ve gotten Janis!
I’m hoping CB doesn’t come back to haunt us!
Anyone able to see into the future and know if a teams gonna cut a CB after this draft?

  • Milliken Steeler

My point exactly Matt. Again, I graded our draft high and Im pleased overall but, we could have gotten someone like Desir AND snatched Janis later who I believe is going to be a stud and future pro bowler for Green Bay. CB is my only concern about our draft:)

Only time will tell, but Ill be watching Jeff closely.

Any posts regarding Derek Moye and his lack of talent are absolutely absurd…..He’s had one full season on an NFL roster with limited reps given to him. It’s a matter of time before his work ethic and skill assets get him more playing time. Everyone needs to realize that the Steelers organization is faithful to their veterans…and Moye will be the first WR to get a crack at the fourth wide receiver spot behind AB, Moore, & Wheaton. I honestly think Moye will be a big contributor to what the Steelers do this season, especially in the Red zone. Bryant will be nothing more than a #5 WR this season…watch and learn as he has a lot of development to undergo.

    -The Steel Curtain has spoken.

  • Matt Manzo

I’m very happy with the draft, but am laughing at how much time I spent scouting CBs! Makes me think the FO didn’t like anyone? Shaq was on my big board so I’m happy about that!

  • shawn

I have a feeling with the additions of Bell, Blount, Munchak & Bryant and a healthy Miller … our RZ production is going to dramatically increase !

  • Brendon Glad

I agree 100% with how WR Coach Richard mann assessed his group. I have solid respect for all of our 5’11” to 6’1″ WRs we’ve run out there in the last 5-6 years, but I tend to think variety is the spice of football, and life. It’s why you want your RB’s to have a mix of power, blocking, receiving skills, and homerun capability. It’s why you want your safeties to have one “cerebral mistake-free” guy like Clark paired with one “Instinctual, ball-hawking, big-play” guy like Troy P. So I’ve always felt like once we hit the red-zone in the last 5 years…we were dealing with a bunch of guys who all were the same. Because at that point Wallace’s deep speed became irrelevant. So you get a bunch of 5’11’-6’1″ guys trying to win, with the back of the end-zone being a significant extra opponent. So I’m glad we are making another attempt to get the fade-route back into the mix effectively. And this is not a dis on Colbert for previous….because he DID try to get that for us with Sweed, and with Burress…but they didn’t work out. So i’m glad we are trying again.

  • Brendon Glad

I like Derek moye, but i think he will be in for a big struggle to make the 2014 Steelers roster. I see it as AB, Wheaton, moore, Bryant, Archer, and then a battle between moye/Heyward-Bey, and Brown for the 6th spot. I think we will keep 6 because I expect Archer to provide RB/WR/KR flexibility, that will allow the Steelers to keep one of those last 3…and thus have 6 WR’s. But moye no longer will have “size” as a separater. I am not a DHB guy, so I think Brown and moye will have a heck of a fight in August.

has any one heard any news from ben about his new tall wr and if they talked yet

  • Steelers12328882

Just to put things in perspective try going back and watching a highlight reel of Limas Sweed at Texas. He sure looks like Bryant.

  • Mike Sweeney

Will definitely be a pleasant fit in Pittsburgh. A player who gets overshadowed by their fellow teammate(Watkins), is a guy, I can’t wait to see. I believe he will be an instant contributor alas Wheaton.

Large WR + underrated QB = 10+ TDs in 2014.
