The Terrible Podcast – Talking First Week Of Steelers 2014 OTA Practices Episode

terriblepodcast

Season 4, Episode 107 of The Terrible Podcast is up and with co-host David Todd now back in the co-host chair, we both go over the news and notes from the Pittsburgh Steelers first set of OTA practices of the 2014 season.

The Steelers have made a few roster moves this week, so we catch up on those transactions in addition to the draft picks that have been signed so far.

Safety Troy Polamalu, cornerback Ike Taylor and rookie running back Dri Archer were all absent from practice this week, so David and I go over the situation with each player. We discuss Archer being accused of blowing off the practices in order to attend the NFLPA Rookie Premier event out in Los Angeles. (Note: This discussion took place prior to being discovered that it was mandatory for Archer to attend the event. Here is an update on that.)

David and I discuss rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier running with the first-team defense right out of the chute and also talk about how there really aren’t many starting spots up for grabs this offseason. We also talk about how defensive end Cam Thomas is currently playing on the left side as opposed to the right and how that worries me.

Center Maurkice Pouncey is back practicing again and that discussion leads to us talking about tackles Mike Adams and Marcus Gilbert. Will Adams be able to turn things around with Mike Munchak now on board? Has Gilbert already reached his ceiling? We address both of those questions during this episode.

David and I also discuss the messed up finger on the right hand of wide receiver Markus Wheaton as well as the comments made by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger earlier this week concerning the Steelers draft.

As usual, a few more talking points are mixed in and discussed during the show that are not mentioned in this recap.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

Dave, I’m glad hear your voice again and also the good news. My thoughts stay with you and your family. Best of luck.

Let me throw this scenario out there…

Our long term starting WR’s going forward = Antonio Brown + Martavis Bryant. That gives us one short quick guy and one fast tall guy.

We assess Lance Moore this year as an experienced slot WR.

We assess Marcus Wheaton this year as a young #3 type WR.

After June 1st cap savings, bring back Santonio Holmes as a veteran back up to either the #1 or #2 WR spots.

That is not bad IMO. Draft a pass catching TE in 2015. That should give Ben enough weapons to carry him through the rest of his career.

Torry Holt had some banged up fingers but that didn’t stop him from catching the ball well.

I’ve kinda feel David Todd sells Worilds a lil short at times. Yes he hasn’t been durable, but when he plays on the side that he played in college he has been productive, not just in 8 games last season but in the season before that as he got something like 5 sacks as a backup.
Last podcast there was mention of a Tackle having to play on a different side and he said it was like writing with the other hand, well im sure its the same for DEs/OLBs having to rush from the side they’re not used to.
I’m not worried about Worilds going into this season, Jones however is a different story. I think Jones will defintely improve from last season but im only seeing around 5 sacks for him, im hoping im wrong though.

Speaking of the oline. What a waste of a hiring that Jack Bicknell Jnr was..

Dave good to have you back, all the best with your fam.

Worldis is very durable for an OLB.

I’m not sure that DT sells him short. I think he is very methodical and he tries to read the tea leaves more than others. If you think about it, there is a reason that the Steelers haven’t yet thrown a long term deal at 93 at 9mil per. And DT is probably in the same boat as teh steelers, “let’s see what happens this eyar”.

I am one that is really high on him. We haven’t seen someone with his level of production since 92 had his DMVP at OLB. He is young, knows the system, and plays the run well.
