With Markus Wheaton Limited, Justin Brown Continues To Get More First-Team Work

With Pittsburgh Steelers second-year wide receiver Markus Wheaton apparently being limited in OTA practices with some sort of injury, fellow second-year wide receiver Justin Brown is receiving more work with the first-team offense.

Last week, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger talked about the progress he’s seen out of the Oklahoma product and Scott Brown of ESPN.com reports Wednesday that Justin Brown impressed during practice.

While Scott Brown intends to go into more detail in a future post on Justin Brown, he did say that last year’s sixth-round draft pick finished off a seven-on-nine drill with a tough touchdown catch in the endzone against two defenders.

Justin Brown spent his entire rookie season on the Steelers practice squad after failing to beat out Derek Moye for a spot on the 53 man roster during training camp. This year, Brown is presumably battling Moye and free agent addition Darrius Heyward-Bey for a spot on this year’s roster.

The upcoming training camp battle between those three players figures to be a great one and it could come down to whichever player can contribute the most on special teams.

As for Wheaton being slowed in practice, Scott Brown says he’s been pretty much been limited to activities where there isn’t much running involved. With that being noted, there’s probably a good chance that he remains limited again on Thursday when the team puts the final wraps on their week of OTA practices.

It’s nice of Justin to keep that spot warm until Martavis puts it together.

This is how you move up………….

Will be interesting to watch Justin Brown in the preseason, sounds like he is a improved player from the OTA reports.

Unless Martavis disappoints this preseason he pretty much has the 4th WR spot. It’s the 5th spot J. Brown is competing for.

training camp this year at WR and ILB is going to be looking like gladiator school

One of the videos from today showed Wheaton running down the field and making a nice catch in the red zone. Didn’t look limited in that drill.

I agree. Like it or not, draft status matters. They aren’t about to cut him. Brown still has to beat out DHB and Moye.

We all have our guesses about who will keep the spot (or if two will). I just hope they all stay through the 4th preseason game.

“Tramp camp”? Sounds interesting, tell me more…

Why is Wheaton “limited”? I didn’t see him on the injury reports.

Well, J. Brown was a 7 round pick & Bryant a 4th round pick – the physic attributes usually speak for the higher pick yes but it says nothing about their possoble development..

Therefore I would they the contributionsand moreover reliability matter the most; just look at 6th round pick Antonio Brown who fastly was trusted more than 3rd round pick E. Sanders 😉

Probably a muscle strain or something very minor. If there was a major or even worrisome problem they’d report it.

  • ApexSteel

It was a joke, but He’s currently the number 2 wideout. Which I’m predicting will eventually be Bryant’s.

This kind of reminds me of another 6th round WR named brown who started making headway and good impressions due to injuries early in the preseason. Hopefully Justin has enough to make this roster in 2014.

    Too funny..

The suspense building as these WRs compete for one roster spot is too much I want to know right now who is going to make the team

I hope this kid makes the squad, nothing against Heyward Bey, but he had his chance.
