2014 Steelers OTA Practices

With Markus Wheaton Limited, Justin Brown Continues To Get More First-Team Work

With Pittsburgh Steelers second-year wide receiver Markus Wheaton apparently being limited in OTA practices with some sort of injury, fellow second-year wide receiver Justin Brown is receiving more work with the first-team offense.

Last week, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger talked about the progress he’s seen out of the Oklahoma product and Scott Brown of ESPN.com reports Wednesday that Justin Brown impressed during practice.

While Scott Brown intends to go into more detail in a future post on Justin Brown, he did say that last year’s sixth-round draft pick finished off a seven-on-nine drill with a tough touchdown catch in the endzone against two defenders.

Justin Brown spent his entire rookie season on the Steelers practice squad after failing to beat out Derek Moye for a spot on the 53 man roster during training camp. This year, Brown is presumably battling Moye and free agent addition Darrius Heyward-Bey for a spot on this year’s roster.

The upcoming training camp battle between those three players figures to be a great one and it could come down to whichever player can contribute the most on special teams.

As for Wheaton being slowed in practice, Scott Brown says he’s been pretty much been limited to activities where there isn’t much running involved. With that being noted, there’s probably a good chance that he remains limited again on Thursday when the team puts the final wraps on their week of OTA practices.
