Pouncey Overrated, Beachum Underrated, According To Pete Prisco

Pete Prisco of CBS Sports resurfaced on Friday with his look at the most overrated and underrated players for every NFL team.

As far as the Pittsburgh Steelers go, Prisco gave the two labels to offensive linemen as he has center Maurkice Pouncey listed as being overrated and left tackle Kelvin Beachum as being underrated.

As far as Pouncey being overrated, Prisco writes:

He is a good player, but he’s not as good as some think and he’s coming off a major injury suffered in Week 1 last season. Yet he is now the highest-paid center in the league. Some don’t think the Steelers missed him last season when he got hurt. I disagree.

Steeler fans have been divided on Pouncey for several seasons now and many probably share in Prisco’s belief. Is he the best center in the league right now? I’m not sure you will hear any sane fan make that proclamation. Can he be? I think he definitely has the potential to be as he’ll only be 25 years old come the start of training camp. With the Steelers expected to run more outside zone in 2014, I think that best fits Pouncey’s playing style and if he can stay healthy, a second first-team All-Pro award could be in his future. This is a big year for him.

As far as Beachum being underrated, Prisco writes:

The Steelers have had line issues for a long time, but Beachum stepped in and played well last season at left tackle. It’s his job now.

Prisco certainly didn’t spend much time on that nugget, but it’s factual. Beachum filled in admirably after Mike Adams failed miserably at the start of the 2013 season. Being as he’s a technician of sorts, his play should stabilize and even improve in 2014 with Mike Munchak now on board as the Steelers offensive line coach.

Do you disagree with Prisco’s choices? If so, who else would you choose to go in either spot?

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

Hard to argue Prisco’s analysis. If anything, Pouncey’s leadership role is not taken into account. And like Dave states, he’s only 25. Plenty of time to continue his improvement, especially with Munch now being the lead teacher. Both he and Beachum should benefit from the Munchak hiring.

i say this all the time about pouncey….just because youre not a perfect player doesnt mean your not really good….the kid came and started and played above par at 22…thats why he’s “overhyped” guys dont do that all the time so of course ppl payed him attention (plus the athleticism didnt hurt). So yeah, he may be overrated at this point a lil bit but ppl talk like the kid is trash…there are arguments that can be made about alot of guys in the league that are “overhyped” but they’re still good…case and point. My favorite young QB is Andrew Luck…id take andrew luck over ANYBODY…except Ben lol but he had a 4-5 week stretch last year that was HISTORICALLY terrible. I mean it was EPIC how bad he was for a couple of weeks….noooooooooooobody seems to notice…nooooooooooooobody seems to talk about it. Why? cuz the kid is still good…his upside is still amazing…hes arguably one of the best young guys at his position with the chance to be THE BEST some day….you could make the very same argument about Pouncey…hes one of the best young guys at his position and has the ability to be THE best…will he do it? I dont know…but this idea that because velasco came in last year (and got hurt btw which is what everyone rips Pouncey for) and played OK that means pouncey is somehow trash…no hes not…ppl just have this attitude that if youre not everything your nothing…and ppl just like to slight the kid becaue him and his brother did a very stupid thing with the Hernendez situation…being critical of the kid isnt the same as completely ignoring his ability…you can be critical withough being ridiculous and alot of ppl ive read speaking of pouncey just point blank go overboard with the hyperbole of how bad the kid is

I see three things that could help get a truer read as to what we have in Pouncey and that’s him playing a full year under a scheme that better fits his skill set and that’s the ZBS, playing next to DeCastro for a full season, and then add in Munchak to top it all off. Scheme, who you’re playing next to, and Coaching go a long way in making a good player.

he may not be the best center in nfl but how many teams in the nfl have the best center in the nfl ….hes more then just a center for the steelers hes the guy ben trusts hes the guy the line trusts …some times the best player in nfl does not mean you can win you can pick and choose from any type player on a team whos considered their number 1 he alone cant win the game its a team sport and if a team dont trust the guy next to them then whole team suffers..as far as kelvin goes i can say the same thing about him as well …only difference with him is hes trusted to protect ben from getting hit by the line so they can do their job ..every one can say oh hes good hes great thats their opinion on what they see that doesnt mean some one else cant see it diff …so if these 2 guys do there job the rest team can do theres ….some times trust in your fellow player is just as important as talent they go together …there is no team in the nfl that has the best player at every spot you pick and choose people who fit your team and these 2 guys seem to be the steelers fit .

  • Eric MacLaurin

The same number as the number of teams with the highest paid center.

  • Virdin Barzey

People are only calling Pouncey overrated since his first injury. Nobody was claiming that when he was All-pro. I get it. He’s injured again and many doubt he may be back to that All-pro year. I like the kid’s chances.

Which leads me to Pete’s idiotic list. Sorry, if a guy played like a stud, game changer, made pro-bowls, etc. and is now in the twilight of his career, he isn’t overrated. He’s over the hill.

I look at guys being overrated as those who claim to be studs, getting paid like one but never lived up to it. Injury doesn’t make a guy overrated. It make him unfortunate. I stopped reading when Pete claimed Romo was UNDERRATED….lol

He’s dead on. Pouncey CAN be the best center in the league, but as of right now, he is overrated.

  • John

How stupid are we supposed to think the front office is? The team found out last year when Pouncey was hurt how valuable he was. They saw first-hand how the team looked with Pouncey and without. They responded with a huge contract for Pouncey. Unless they are total fools, that ends the inquiry. Prisco’s views are not based on day-to-day insight but on other stuff that fails to account for what is really happening.

  • steelerdre

I agree the jury still out on Pouncey’s ability to stay on the field. He’s been injured the last three years. Until he can play the entire season injury free he will always be listed as overrated.

  • JohnB

I think Beachum is rated just fine (for now).

  • Steel PAul

I guess I don’t know how well-rated Pouncey is nationwide. From what I see on this board, I’d say he’s a bit overrated, but homers can get a little overinflated at times. We get caught up in enjoying the good things about our team.

I don’t think he’s the best, but I think he’s damn good and I’m happy with him.

I was surprised, though, how well both Velasco and Wallace seemed to fill in when Pouncey went out. I’m sure there were many adjustments, including play calls, but it didn’t seem as disasterous as I expected.

  • Aric Brown

In my opinion the most underrated player on the steelers is Heath Miller most overrated right now is Markus Wheaton… kids done nothing.. but lots of people are already crowning him

  • Geoff Cordner

Is it possible for Ben to be underrated? I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves for last year’s offensive turnaround.

  • Weiss Chad

I think Lawrence Timmons is most underrated player on the team.Id probably have to agree with pouncey being overrated ..

  • cp72

I think it he uses overrated for shock value. Prisco says Pouncey is overrated then says he could be second team all pro. Basically he’s saying he doesn’t think Pouncey is the best center in the league, but he might be the 2nd best. I happen to agree Pouncey’s reputation often exceeds his production. He might be the most physically gifted center in the league, but doesn’t always play to the level of his talent.

  • cp72

    Overrated: Pouncey
    Underrated: Antonio Brown

  • Jim McCarley

I would have to say that Ike Taylor has been overrated his entire career, if only by the Steelers. Underrated…Timmons.

  • cp72

I’m getting a feeling Lance Moore is gonna be our #2 receiver.

  • Steelers@2010

It is amazing how so many people, especially Steeler Fans, how they rank this guy as the Best Center in Football. Pouncey had one superb season, his Rookie Season. I know I’m just another fan like most of you are as well, but I think the Steelers should have locked up Cortez Allen and Big Ben prior to giving that money to Pouncey. Besides, why not wait until after the season to see if he can finally sustain a full year without injury? Without a doubt, the guy is not durable at all. I don’t think he has made it through a full season since the Steelers drafted him.

  • 20Stoney

If only Ike could catch the freakin ball half the time it hits him in the hands……..It’s beyond me how a guy with so much athletic ability looks like he is wearing oven mitts when he tries to catch a football.

  • Weiss Chad

Antonio brown was ranked 23rd best player in league. That sounds about right to me

  • Jerry Lynch

I don’t understand why you say Heath Miller is underrated when most pundits consider him to be one of the best at his position? Every year one or two tight ends have better years, but they are not the same year after year. Nobody is “crowning” Markus Wheaton when he really has yet to play. We are hoping he meets his potential and then maybe we CAN “crown” him.

  • WIINGY

Pete Prisco is a douche. I’m sure Munchak would laugh at his analysis.

  • pittsburghjoe

I guess Pete is just figuring out what many Steeler fans already knew.

  • Jim McCarley

he seems to run on his tippy toes all the time….Can he even bend at the waist? he just looks odd out there…to me.
