Report: Steelers Monitoring Situation With Free Agent CB Brandon Flowers

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports the Pittsburgh Steelers are monitoring the situation with former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers following his release last week.

Flowers was scheduled to earn $7.5 million in 2014, so you can bet he will not be willing to sign for peanuts. In fact, I question La Canfora’s report and will be shocked if the Steelers even bring Flowers in for a visit.

So why is Flowers still unsigned? Pat Kirwan of CBS Sports listed several potential reasons on Wednesday. One unidentified position coach told Kirwan, “[Flowers] He tends to blame the coaches when things go bad.”

Flowers missed three games last season with a knee injury and is probably best suited to play inside moving forward as opposed to outside.

If Flowers were willing to play for next to nothing, that would be one thing, but I can’t see that happening. Reports on Wednesday listed Flowers as visiting with the San Diego Chargers.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Matt Manzo

    I hope it’s not Baltimore!!!
Looking back, I know a few of us wanted to draft him, would we still of wanted him after seeing a few years on tape? Attitude and injury aside.

  • steelant

i want him him but dont want him unless ike gets CUT

  • SteelersDepot

Flowers is best served standing around watching and waiting for a starting CB to go down.

  • SteelersDepot

Good luck with that. I wanted a pet elephant when I was 6.

  • Douglas Andrews

He’s gonna want to much money for Pittsburgh. Would be nice but then who’s the odd man out or would they keep all the CB’s.

  • Eric MacLaurin

    Get real!

Are you telling me you would turn down a pet elephant?

  • steelster

He is only 5′ 9″, the steelers don’t need another short cb.

  • Terrence Phelps

    PASS

  • Kevin Gobleck

That’d be one hell of a “take your pet to school day” though

  • rn

Yes?? I miss sarcasm sometimes, but he’s a pro bowler…

  • Steelers@2010

I really don’t see Ike being cut, especially after he took a pay-cut to return to the team for his final year. Haven’t heard too much about Flowers, I say continue to do it the Steelers Way, pay your own first. Lets get Cortez Allen signed.

  • CW

Let them monitor the situation. So long as they don’t overspend to get him, what does it matter?

If he happens to fall for some reason I’d be happy if the Steelers picked him up for the right price even if it made the situation a little more dicey in the short run.

It’s like the situation with Jermichael Finley. If he for some reason were to end up on the Steelers squad for a couple of years at a good price and played well as a number 2 tight end, I’d be fine with the front office working the cap to fit him in right now.

  • Jacob Dixon

    Yes

  • steelant

its all bs unless ike is gone i see no way he is signed

  • moonunit1

What? Why? Honestly, please answer why. Ike Taylor knows the system better than any CB on the roster and is making almost no money this year. If you bring in a guy who doesn’t know the defense, why would you cut your veteran CB who knows the whole difference and took a 5 million dollar pay cut?

  • moonunit1

Why not? Deshea was 5’10 and he was great in our system.

  • Jesse Murray

Was. He isnt near the player he was a few years ago.

  • Matthew Colarossi

Don’t see why we would have to cut Ike to pick him up? Just sign Jason Worilds to a deal that’s not worth 9.75mil a year

  • steelant

this is great sign him then move ike to slot if ike struggles put will gay in

  • Krankor

Yeah, but you could name him “Stampy”!

  • steelant

true matthew but worilds seems like he wants a hefty payday

  • AzheDraven

I dont want him on the whole AFC North, but I dont care if he signs elsewhere or retires.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

You beat me to it. Unless some team overwhelms him with money AND a starting job, he’s better off waiting.

Plus, that way he gets to skip training camp.

  • rn

He made his first and only Pro Bowl last season… So he is a pro bowler.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

I’d rather see the Steelers wait for Michael Roos (OT) to get cut and spend the money on him.

We could definitely use Flowers in the short term. But we’re better off extending Cortez and drafting a legit young CB starter in the long run.

  • JohnB

    we already have a nickleback

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/JohnnyLoose Johnny Loose

I think the Steelers will continue to monitor his situation until another team overpays for his services. No thanks.

  • steelster

that is when we had a much better pass rush, also would rather see that money go towards the cortez allen extension.

  • Matt Manzo

I remember liking him cuz he was pretty tough, but I don’t know anything about his nfl production.

  • Justin Barlow

cant have too many quality DBs… however, if he is slot only at this point then we need to pass… dont want to see him in BMore though. that is very bad for us.

  • Jesse Murray

Brandon Merriweather made 2 pro bowls. The pro bowl isnt a guarantee of performance. Flowers was benched last season. He made based on previous play not last season.

  • Rosco

So hes not a good pick up for us, but we dont want him in Baltimore?

  • Virdin Barzey

Its time to move on from Ike but he’s been great for us so one more year isn’t so bad. Not big on Flowers. Only at the right price. Fact that others are interested, that doesn’t seem possible.

  • Iron Cadet

People are so hung up on height. Look at the guy’s tape. He plays extremely well in zone and would excel in our scheme.

  • steelster

he has an attitude problem, read up on the guy, no thanks.

  • Zach

I would only sign him for the vet minimum (and I’m serious). Since this will never happen, I’d be shocked to see him as a Steeler.

  • Nolrog

Look at the positives though. You would be the fertilizer king of your town!

  • Nolrog

Players that skip training camp always seem to perform very poorly and wind up injured.

  • ATL96STEELER

Roos…you are smart man! Probably will be several suitors if he is cut, but you’d hope Munchak might help steer him our way…who do you rid should that happen?…Gilbert out, move Adams to RT and Roos to LT, and Beech to backup G?

  • http://thereactionblog.com Michael Stickings

Let someone else overpay for him. The Steelers would be smart to keep tabs on the situation, but that’s it.

  • Iron Cadet

I’ve read up on the guy, if the coaches meet with him and like him, then I’ll trust their judgement over people that have never spoken to the guy. burfict had an attitude problem too

  • wdhammer

I’ll bet he ends up in Baltimore .

  • CrazyTerry

Signing Worldis to a deal merely pushes cap money to a future year. He is still getting paid real dollars. Steelers cap problems are not merely restricted to this year. Ike taylor would be real savings as he is overpaid even at his new salary. I don’t care if he is Rooney’s favorite, Colbert did a bad job renegotiating his salary. He should have been paid at least a half Million less.
