Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin knows that offseason practice time is precious and as a result, he’s not letting some nasty weather get in the way of the team’s final mandatory minicamp practice.
When the rains came Thursday, Tomlin had his team work in it for a little while before finally moving operations to the indoor practice facility.
Sans full contact in pads, the morning and afternoon practices during minicamp are structured to mimic what the team will go through during training camp, so at least the younger players will have somewhat of an idea as to what to expect. Having them work a little in the rain also won’t hurt them.
The Steelers are coming off of back-to-back 8-8 seasons and that’s unacceptable. While a few other teams around the league appear to be either canceling or cutting short their final day of minicamp, Tomlin is not having any part of that this year.
Perhaps Tomlin is trying to send the younger players on the team a message about how they need to adapt and work through adversity. Perhaps he’s just preparing them for the few rainy practices that will inevitably take place at Latrobe.
Regardless of Tomlin’s reason, I’m pretty sure that none of the players melted.
