Steelers LB Vince Williams: ‘I Feel Like I’ve Been Here For Several Years’

After spending a lot of his rookie season as a starter once veteran Larry Foote went down injured in the season-opener, second-year linebacker Vince Williams feels like he’s made tremendous strides since then.

“I feel it’s night and day difference right now,” said Williams, who was drafted last year by the Steelers in the sixth-round of the 2013 NFL Draft. “Right now I feel like I’ve been here for several years, actually. So my understanding, I’m really starting to click and understand what I’m talking about.”

In addition to making strides in those areas, Williams also believes he’ll be a better player during his second season because of the confidence he now has in not only the defense, but himself.

“I’m out here playing much, much faster” said Williams. “Last year I used to have to think about things before I did it, but now I understand what I have to do. I see it and I go.”

Currently, Williams is second-team buck linebacker behind Lawrence Timmons and while he’s unlikely to play as much as he did last season baring another injury, he believes he can step right in like he did last year as a rookie. Only this time, he’ll be much more prepared to run the defense.

“I know what I’m doing and I feel confident that the coaches know what I’m doing,” said Williams. “And my teammates, whenever I make calls or corrections, they believe what I’m saying, because they know that I know I’m doing.”

It is so refreshing to know we have young talent at the backup positions inside

I completely agree. I posted yesterday about being excited about our young talent at the backup safety spot as well.

Young and old, W.Allen is not always regarded as a great player, but he’s a more than serviceable backup, able to step in at either position. So, yes between Thomas and Allen I really like our Safety depth as well

True, although PFF would disagree with you…

I disagree with PFF on many occasions

Vince Williams actually kind of reminds me of a “young” Larry Foote. Remember back when Larry was decently quick? He never had long speed, but he was extinctive and a solid tackler. Vince is kind of like that. Both of them are pretty smart. Both of them are somewhat vocal. And they seem to be good team guys.

Great to have a young guy with nearly a whole season of starting experience as a backup. If anything should happen and Vince Williams steps on the field, I won’t have nearly as many questions as I did last year. I think we’re pretty solid at ILB, DL (besides maybe a NT), and S. If they bolster the CB and OLB positions, I think we’re ready for another hardware run. Conversely, If the younger WRs pan out, and we get us a young, solid TE to groom behind Heath, and if Munchak works a small miracle (kidding) w/ our offensive line, we are easily back on top of the AFC North and going deep in the playoffs. I don’t see how this team isn’t heading in the right direction. Very excited as a Steeler fan.

Huge fan of Williams. Hoping this year he makes a highlight reel by blowing a RB up!
