Steelers RB LeGarrette Blount: ‘It’s A Power, Downhill Running Game’

During his first four years in the league, new Pittsburgh Steelers running back LeGarrette Blount has dished out quite a bit of punishment with his powerful running style. Now that he’s with the Steelers, he likes what he’s seen so far out of the offense as far as it matching his running style.

“It’s a power, downhill running game,” Blount said last week.

Whether or not that power, downhill Steelers running game will be successful in 2014 will depend quite a bit on the offensive line that should be revitalized by the return of center Maurkice Pouncey from the serious knee injury that he suffered last year in the season-opener.

“They’re big, they’re physical. They are aggressive,” said Blount, who rushed for 772 yards and seven touchdowns last season with the New England Patriots. “I like the fact that they come downhill and love running power plays and plays that are straight forward without all the running sideways. I love that about them.”

While Blount now seems to be at home with his new teammates and their abilities, he sounds like he still has some work to do in order to master the playbook.

“I am going to be a lot more comfortable with it in the next couple of weeks, but I am getting there.”

Luckily for Blount, he’s been able to lean quite a bit on second-year running back Le’Veon Bell. who he has been hanging out with quite a bit since arriving in Pittsburgh.

“I knew I was going to come here with another guy,” said Blount of Bell. “We hit it off from the beginning. “He knows his playbook a lot better than I do. I ask him a lot of questions, things like that. He has shown me places to eat. I am learning things from him on and off the football field.”
