Steelers S Mike Mitchell Likes How Dick LeBeau Intends On Using Him

New Pittsburgh Steelers safety Mike Mitchell was originally drafted by the Oakland Raiders back in 2009 and since that time he’s already played four different defensive coordinators.

Dick LeBeau will Mitchell’s fifth different defensive coordinator in as many years and he likes what the Hall of Famer currently has planned for him in 2014.

“I love it,” said Mitchell. “I can already see (LeBeau) is using me the way I want to be used. I am getting to play in space a lot and I have also been coming in on some blitzes and timing them up pretty well. I am loving the scheme. I think it fits me great.”

The Steelers made Mitchell their top priority during free agency as they signed the unrestricted free agent to a five-year, $25 million contract to replace Ryan Clark. Mitchell, like his predecessor Clark, comes off as a very intelligent player that should be able to pick up LeBeau’s defense fairly easily.

“I haven’t made any mental errors yet,” Mitchell said in a recent interview. “I pride myself on being a prepared, smart football player so I think I’m just along with everyone else. We’re putting in a good amount of plays and to be able to play them and play them at a high speed I think I am doing a pretty good job.”

According to Mitchell, LeBeau is pleased with what the former third-round draft pick has shown so far during the six OTA practices.

“Coach LeBeau came up and told me I was doing a pretty good job. So I think I am doing a pretty good job,” said Mitchell.

Mitchell, LeBeau and the rest of the Steelers will be back on the field next week as the third set of OTA practices get underway.

Very excited about this signing. Interceptions will definitely go up

The Steelers have made improvements in just about every area of the game. CB still seems light and we could use a good P, but all in all, this will be a better team.

This guy is going to close fast and hit hard, just the way Clark used to do. As well, he is faster and may make a few more plays at the back end and there could also be some extra INT’s. Loving this. Keep in mind that with the added speed we are likely to see more base and nickel and much less quarters as Shazier is fast enough to cover almost anyone. I think that’s why they have thrown him in with the 1’s.

    2nd round pick

Mitchell was a 2nd round pick. #47 overall. Not a big deal. He was seen as a HUGE reach at the time. Hopefully we’ll have a James Farrior bust –> boom situation on our hands.

Oops. Just saw someone else pointed that out.

    Bring the pain!

A very good pass rush and a very good safety can make up for not so great corners. I know people don’t like to hear it and he is one of my favorite Steelers all-time but Polamalu can’t cover like he used to. Unless he does something this year to change it, that and Ike is a little of a concern.

The younger players are going to make this defense dominate or fail. Its a bit concerning because I don’t think we have relied on so many young players in quite a while.

U don’t know what u are talking about champ. TP was one of our brighter spots last year on Defense, him & wreck him Cam. @virdinbarzey:disqus

IF we could get 7 sacks from our secondary this year, that woudl be huge.

I think if you ask TP to cover 20 plays a game, he gets exposed. But asking him to do it the avearge safety amount of times I think you will get a good result. Plus he was being asked to cover monster TEs last year where this year Shazier will take that role on. Which makes the smaller receivers and RBs Troys chore, and he is better at that.
