Steelers Sign Rookie DE Stephon Tuitt

The Pittsburgh Steelers now have all nine of their draft picks under contract as defensive end Stephon Tuitt signed his four-year rookie deal on Wednesday.

Tuitt, who was selected by the Steelers in the second-round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame, likely signed a contract that will total out at around $4.6 million and included a signing bonus somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.672 million.

Tuitt has been working with the Steelers second-team defense during the offseason practices thus far after registering 7.5 sacks and 49 total tackles last season at Notre Dame.

Fantastic! Onward and upward, boys. Let’s get to work!

  • steeltown

    Nice!

Let’s hope he either proves himself worthy of a spot on the first team by the start of the season or the team signs Keisel. Otherwise, ugh.

  • Big White

1st Round Talent at a 2nd Round discount. Nice pick!

  • steelant

i think he needs to start week 1 just look what bell did as a 2nd round pick.

  • Big White

Don’t sleep on Cam Thomas, he may surprise you.

  • joed32

DE is a lot harder to learn than RB according to Heyward and Mitchell. I just hope he gets some playing time early.

  • AzheDraven

So, how much cap space is left?

  • steelant

still this is cam thomas first year in pittsburgh and tuitt first year and tuitt is the more pure DE to me

  • steelant

about 6 million time to extend cortez allen

  • http://thereactionblog.com Michael Stickings

    I hope you’re right, I really do.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

    Does anybody know…

Did the Steelers have the option of signing Tuitt to a 5 year deal? Or does the CBA mandate 4 year contracts for all 2nd rounders?

  • StrengthOfVictory

CBA restricts to a 4-year rookie deal, I believe. (So as to allow RFA and UFA status to occur on a schedule.) Then, at any point, the team can negotiate a contract extension when it’s in the player’s and team’s best interest.

  • steeltown

Even if Thomas starts the regular season at DE, Tuitt will see his share of snaps

  • joed32

I think you’re right in that only 1st rounders get 5 years. Watching the draft they mentioned that when Minnesota traded up to get Bridgewater at the bottom of the 1st.

  • CeeBeast

Every rookie is given a 4-year contract. 1st rounders, however, have a team option for a 5th year. So no, we can’t sign him to a 5yr deal.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

That’s what I thought. And then they eliminated the restricted free agent tag right? Only UFA and transitional tags remain?

  • pkeats86

    And Heyward!

  • Nathaniel Sullivan

I think he meant K. Bell, not le’veon Bell.

  • Nathaniel Sullivan

    I believe it’s around 7.2
