Steelers Sign WR C.J. Goodwin, Waive WR Jasper Collins

On Tuesday, we passed along a report that the Pittsburgh Steelers were going to sign California University wide receiver C.J. Goodwin to their roster and now that transaction has been made official.

As part of that report, I speculated that if Goodwin was ultimately signed that it could possibly come at the expense of undrafted wide receiver Jasper Collins and that wound up being the case. Collins had been sidelined during several of the OTA practices with an undisclosed injury, so he was waived on Tuesday.

Goodwin caught 11 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown in 2013 and reportedly ran a 4.41 second 40-yard-dash at his Pro Day. The Steelers have Goodwin listed at (6-3, 190), but other sites have him at (6-1, 178).

Prior to his one season at California University, Goodwin played at Fairmont State in 2012 and he caught 24 passes for 440 yards and four touchdowns that season.

I liked Collins heading into OTAs, he was very productive at Mount Union but it sure seems like he struggles with injury issues. I think MIA waived him injured before the season started last year.

Goodwin is interesting with nice size, hands and speed, I like how many options we have at WR right now. The cream will rise to the top. I hear J. Brown is turning heads right now.

It’s kind of crazy to think that AB is one of the lesser physically gifted players on the squad right now. We have guys that are taller, faster, and stronger than him, but he’s still No 1.

Steelers never have had a Jasper on the team.

Cal and Fairmont St. have him listed at 6’3″ 190 lb. Not sure where 6’1″ came from.

I was rooting for Collins because he’s from my Alma Mater, the University of Mount Union. Injuries can derail a player though especially when they come from a small school and really need the practice reps. Oh, well, Goodwin is another small school prospect who is waaaay under the radar, and I always like to see guys like that make it. We’ll see!!!! 😀
