No Training Camp Competition In Sight For Steelers K Shaun Suisham

Over the course of the last four weeks of offseason practices, the Pittsburgh Steelers have only carried one place kicker on their 90 man roster, but you have to wonder if veteran Shaun Suisham will soon get someone to share training camp duties with prior to the team reporting to Latrobe.

It’s not like Suisham really needs competition, however, as he’s currently coming off of his best season as a professional. Last year, the Bowling Green product made 30 of the 32 field goals that he attempted and was perfect on all extra points.

Bringing in another kicker wouldn’t be a slight against Suisham. Instead, it would save some wear and tear on his leg. Over the course of the last three preseasons, Suisham has shared kicking duties with Swayze Waters and Danny Hrapmann and he easily beat out both.

When Suisham went undrafted out of college in 2005, he was originally signed by the Steelers to compete in training camp against then-incumbent Jeff Reed. Even though he made his one field goal attempt during the preseason that year, he was released late that August as expected.

Suisham is entering the final year of his current contract in 2014. He has been the Steelers kicker since replacing the aforementioned Reed midway through the 2010 season.

I sure hope they bring in someone, not just for to give Suisham some relief but also in case of injury. I always liked Hrapmann, wish we could bring him back again. I remember that one preseason he went 6 for 6 on FG attempts

  • Plus, he’s Canadian. Always a bonus.

  • I agree. What about that Swayze kid though? He had a boot on him if I remember correctly. Either way, like you stated it’s more for relief and injury concern. Suisham is the man here and he deserves it for now.

Being Canadian isn’t always a bonus. Just look at Canadian bacon, always hated on for not being like our bacon.

Will sushi get his contract extended?

  • steeltown

I sure hope so, especially if he continues to kick well.

  • True enough. Alas. Plus, we have Celine Dion and Bieber, even if both of them live south of the border. They’re the opposite of bonus.

I want him back for next season. But I’m just concerned about two things; +50 yards FG and when he plays against Oakland.

Would hate to have to find another solid place kicker, when we cant even seem to find a decent punter

Maybe Wing is our guy. I would love that. But I’d like Sushi back for another 2-3 years and then draft one on the 4th-7th round. I would like them to bring Kirby Van Der Kamp to compete, he has a cool name to cheer for.

Im rooting for Wing, he’s young and has plenty of upside. He could, in theory, hold down that position for yrs to come if he turns the proverbial corner.
