Maurkice Pouncey Would Be Wise To Learn From This Incident

When an NFL player makes news some time between the end of minicamp and the beginning of training camp, it’s almost never good. Generally, it means that he’s either gotten himself arrested or placed himself in some other sort of trouble. Failing that, headlines are generally reserved for announcements of player suspensions.

Quiet offices with nary a ringing phone are bliss for teams during this period. The silence of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offseason was shattered early yesterday morning, however, at a night club in Miami, in which center Maurkice Pouncey and his twin brother were hosting an annual joint celebration for their birthday.

Reports surfaced a bit later on in the day that two individuals who characterize themselves as socialites claimed to have been assaulted by the Pouncey brothers. The male insinuates that he was harassed for his perceived sexual orientation, while the female claims to have been injured attempting to break up the altercation.

After some initial discrepancy, the Miami Police Department did later confirm that the female alleged victim filed a report on the incident, though they added that the Pounceys have yet to be identified as subjects.

Later in the day, Pro Football Talk cited a source who believes that evidence indicates that Pouncey and his brother were not involved in the incident, but beyond that stated above, we have nothing else to go on.

Regardless of whether or not Maurkice has once again gotten himself into anything untoward, however, perhaps it’s time for him to start considering maintaining a lower public profile going forward, for his own good.

It’s an unfortunate truth for celebrities that there are those who will choose to target them in an effort to gain from the incident, usually financially. Pouncey would be fortunate if that is all this turns out to be.

The fifth-year All-Pro has gotten himself involved in a couple of other situations over his career that cause some to view him in a negative light, seeing him as immature and irresponsible.

His association with former college teammate Aaron Hernandez is well known by now. it was at the same night club a year earlier at the brothers’ last celebration in which the two were scorned for donning caps reading “FREE HERNANDEZ”. Mike Pouncey was also involved in the harassment of former Miami Dolphins teammate Jonathan Martin.

The most recent headline for Maurkice, on the other hand, had been the signing of a new five-year contract extension that makes him the highest-paid center in the league based on annual base salary.

Pouncey had already been viewed as a young leader on this team last year, and that is a title that he has been expanding this offseason, helping to guide the young offensive line along with veteran Ramon Foster and new offensive line coach Mike Munchak.

Part of being a leader is leading through example, and that goes for both on and off the field.

There’s certainly nothing wrong with celebrating your birthday, nor are athletes forbidden from attending night clubs. But there’s a certain amount of risk involved when celebrities let their guard down, placing them in a vulnerable position of getting involved in an altercation, such as the one that two victims claim occurred early yesterday morning.

As they grow older and mature, many athletes find that the rewards of the night life are not worth the risks for a person of their stature. A night of partying is not worth putting your career in jeopardy. Hopefully Pouncey comes to this realization soon, regardless of whether or not he was responsible for any wrongdoing in this incident.

It seems like the only time Maurkice makes bad decisions is with his brother. I know they are twins, but Maurkice needs to be the mature adult here. He also needs to reassess these birthday celebrations. Hopefully, nothing comes of this incident.

These are big parties, someone will always get drunk, get in a fight or get arrested.

    Time to grow up.

So what makes this incident so much different than any of the other one’s? I guess what happened to his team mates does not even register on the radar. 1) Could he not have learned from his brothers involvement in the Incognito case? 2) Could he not have learned from the Free Hernandez incident? 3) Could he not have leaned from the Chris Rainey incident. 4) Could he not have learned from the Adam’s stabbing? This guy does not have the mental capacity to learn.

  • pittsburghjoe

Maybe he is training to appear in the next Hangover movie. All that is needed is Mike Tyson , a hotel room and a few barn yard animals.

  • Steelers58

Perhaps when learning from an incident. You might have to teach it in x and o’s

  • Jason Vancil

Guys like Maurkice don’t tend to learn anything. Should not have committed long term to this guy. And his on field reputation doesn’t match his play.

  • RW

I have to believe that Mike is a big source of this idiocracy.

  • walter mason

When you are exceptional athletes like the Pounceys and Hernendez, you can stay up all night drinking and partying for a few years but eventually age and the party lifestyle catches up with you and if Maurkice continues on this path we will undoubtably see a degradation in his play and it should be a concern. I agree Mike may be an influence as he never even apologized for supporting a gangland style mass murderer.

I think the whole twitter thing after the Denver playoff loss was pretty telling as to Maurkice’s thought processes. I’m paraphrasing because it was 2 years ago, but it was something like “I’m a Steeler, what do you do for a living? You’re a loser.” Attitude of entitlement.

    Amen Matthew. Amen.

    Ironical?

The Rooney’s reward Pouncey with this blessed contract and this happens. Regardless if there was involvement with the brothers, it’s a slap in the face to the Rooney’s and the organization, imo.
Printing up flyers and hosting a bday at club = trouble. Your exposing yourself to strangers who might have motive.
Be smart…. Have a backyard bbq with your closest friends and celebrate in the privacy of a residence.

Oh to be Young and Stupid. We ALL go through this phase in our lives. What the Pouncy twins have yet to realize is they are now very wealthy celebrity atheletes that can no longer mingle with the masses when alcohol and gold diggers are around. Doing so just greatly heightens the risk of damage to their public image, reputation, wealth and legal liabilities.

As Bob Seger sings in the last line of the song…Beautiful Loser… “YOU JUST CAN’T HAVE IT ALL!”

  • Steelers12328882

    Yes, dude. Quite ironical!

  • Matt Manzo

If I signed a fat contract and my brother lived in Miami I’d be throwing a big party too! It sounds like the mistake was printing the flyers and the guest list. You’ve got to be way more careful with the guest list. “Socialities from Miami” that’s asking for some dramatic reality TV!

  • pittsburghjoe

Yeah, small birthday party at home with Wally and June Cleaver. Maybe they can invite a few friends over for pizza and ice cream. Bobbing for apples would be nice too.

  • ApexSteel

Other than the free Hernendez “incident” (He wore a hat to support his friend who he believes is innocent, but I forgot athletes can’t have opinions) they have absolutely NOTHING to do with him and they aren’t even close to being similar to this situation. What does he need to learn? Don’t have a birthday party and if a drunk gay male is being belligerent don’t be in the vicinity?

  • pittsburghjoe

Learn?? How about shut the party down before 4:20 AM. Let me guess, his factory worker friends all worked the 3-11 shift and the party could not get started until midnight, right?

  • walter mason

LOL OK OK although its not smart, a huge publicized bash once a year may not be the worst thing he could do but does anyone know how often he parties late at night at the club scene? Is this a regular habit? Just curious.

  • ApexSteel

It’s a club… How would he go about telling a business to stop conducting business?

  • walter mason

At least one killing allegedly happened immediately after leaving the bar with the Pounceys. Thank God they are not involved.

  • steelerdre

Maybe the Steelers should have done there homework on this guy before drafting him…I hope this contract extension doesn’t come back to bite them in the butt. I’m sure the Steelers put a clause in his contract to protect themselves against this type of negative behavior.

  • Steelers12328882

Oh yeah, I’m sure no one here went out and partied when they were 24. LOL this whole thing is so ridiculous. He did nothing wrong. It’s so crazy how fans put players on a pedestal.

  • Jide Sobamowo

Well looks like the Rooney’s will may have to plant stealth representatives at any offseason parties these two try to through in the future. Too big of an investment to allow him to try to police himself at least at this point in his life.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/JohnnyLoose Johnny Loose

As long as what he does doesn’t affect his play on the field I’ll be quiet. He’s now the highest paid center in the league, so his play needs to reflect that. It’s his life so it’s not up to us to try and make his decisions for him. What he needs to realize though, is that he’s not only representing himself, he is representing the Pittsburgh Steelers. Steeler Nation and especially the younger fans look up to these players to a degree they couldn’t even fathom. It’s always better to see a player show appreciation for the opportunity they have, rather than only think about themselves. I really hope Pouncey stays on the right track and does the best he can in his profession. I think he will.

Single men in their twenties, athletes during the off season….a birthday party where there is an altercation or some gets assaulted. A simple disagreement can be classified as an altercation, while an assault may be nothing more than someone gets pushed or grabbed. It’s funny how this happens every day, all day long and no one knows anything about it or cares, until it’s an athlete/celebrity. It’s time we, as fans, stop looking for things to criticize celebrities for and these bums trying to get rich off some BS alleged incident need to be jailed for extortion.

I did too thats why I wasnt an NFL player
