Steelers 2014 Pre Training Camp Roster Polls: Will NT Hebron Fangupo Make The Final 53?

The Pittsburgh Steelers will report to Latrobe for training camp on Friday, so I thought we would continue to spend these last several days talking about a few players that many believe will have a decent shot at making the final 53 man roster. Basically, these are players that we can’t quite consider locks, but do consider as being on the bubble.

After reading the recap of the player that we highlight, you can cast your vote as to whether or not you think that player will make the final 53 man roster. Each poll will run for three days.

The eleventh player up in this series is third-year nose tackle Hebron Fangupo.

2013 Season Recap:

Fangupo, who was originally signed off of waivers from the Seattle Seahawks by the Steelers in December of 2012, made the final 53 man roster out of training camp last season after beating out former fourth-round draft pick Alameda Ta’amu in training camp. However, despite making the roster, Fangupo only dressed for six games last season as Al Woods was the primary backup to starting nose tackle Steve McLendon on the defensive line. The Brigham Young product played all of 13 snaps on defense in 2013 and was credited with one assisted tackle.

2014 Outlook:

After losing Woods to the Tennessee Titans during the offseason, the Steelers signed San Diego Chargers free agent defensive lineman Cam Thomas to presumably fill his role. As of right now, Thomas is slated to be one of the Steelers two starting defensive ends and he will presumably also back up McLendon at the nose tackle position. Being as the Steelers will more than likely want to keep one more big-bodied defensive tackle on their 53 man roster this year, Fangupo will have to beat out rookie sixth-round draft pick Daniel McCullers for that spot during training camp. McCullers is very raw, however, so Fangupo’s experience and knowledge of the defense likely gives him the upper hand in that battle as the team heads into Latrobe.

One factor that might shuffle everything up is whether Keisel comes back for another year or not, that would give more flexibility at the DE position and truly allow Cam Thomas to be that backup NT and swing DLineman. In which case they really wouldn’t need Fang as he would be inactive on game days.

The other factor of course is McCullers, if he shows any promise in preseason he might win that last spot

  • Big White

Thomas will play DE unless he’s needed at NT. I don’t think Thomas will play NT unless in an emergency situation. Out of all the supposed “bubble” guys we’ve looked at here recently, to me Fangupo is as much a lock as any.

  • srdan

I think this one is between McCullers and FAngupo. I have nothing noteworthy to go off of, except my gut feeling. Fangupo ends up with the short end of that stick if you ask me.

  • Jacque Strappe

In the event that Thomas was forced into duty at nose, Tuitt will be next man up at DE. I have a feeling that McCullers will be PS and Fangupo makes the 53.

  • cencalsteeler

Fang has had plenty of time to show his qualities. I’m hoping McCullers unseats him proving the draft pick was not a waste and the position is upgraded.

  • Lil Smitty

I don’t see Keisel coming back except for an injury replacement. That would lead me to believe that Fangupo will make the roster unless McCullers shows some skill in Preseason. I have also heard talk about McCullers working at DE.

  • Toddy Bravo

Obviously, I think Cam Thomas will be an emergency NT, but I think the coaches have made it pretty clear that he will be playing DE primarily. Therefore, if we keep a backup NT, I don’t think he is the guy. It’s a battle between Fangupo and McCullers. If anyone thinks we’re going to keep a raw rookie (McCullers) as our backup NT over an older guy who knows the system (Fangupo), you don’t know how the Steelers operate.

The other option is we keep only McClendon as the starter and Thomas as the emergency, which would be very risky IMO.

  • Matt Manzo

Exactly! I’m hoping most of our back ups get upgraded this year. Carter, Fang, Garvin, Golden. But that means guys like HJones, Zumwalt, Mcullers, Richardson need to tear it up in the preseason!
I’d like to see Mcullers tried at DE and Garvin snaps at Saftey!

No 2 old for such little experience not good little to no upside and most likely morman he shouldn’t have made it over taamu last yr

  • joed32

He only entered the league 2 years ago in 2012 and he’s 24. Came out late because he’s a Morman and went on a mission. I don’t think he makes it either but not because of age.

  • NW86

My thoughts exactly. I’m hoping they find another option besides Thomas starting at DE. Whether that’s Keisel, someone else, or Tuitt picks it up more quickly than expected. If that’s the case, I see Thomas as the swing backup, and then they could have McCullers on the practice squad. There’s really no need for 3 NT’s on the 53-man roster.

  • Ben Anderson

Thomas, McClendon, Heyward, Tuitt, Arnfelt,…… and then Fangupo and McCullers fighting for one roster spot. I don’t know how to predict this race.
It could come down to this question: will McCullers get through waivers and even be available to sign to the Practice Squad? If you don’t think he will, you have to keep him and hope he develops. He’s too good a prospect, on paper, to expose to another team.
Keisel coming back doesn’t necessarily affect anything other than Arnfelt’s roster spot. But, Arnfelt has two years left in PS eligibility anyway.

  • wdhammer

Id’ park McCullers big can in the middle. teach him to sit and clog.

I agree as I also think we drafted McCullers for ST blocking duty and if he shows anything in preseason(imo at DE), anything at all, and we wouldn’t be able to hide that little guy on the PS at all, so I hope to see him on the 53. Between he and Dri and Blake and Wing, I think our special teams this year have a chance to be really very special…and I can’t wait to watch! Go Steelers!

  • Skinny Merlino

Uh no he’s 29 idk where u got ur info from but u are very wrong

  • dgh57

I think maybe after drafting Shazier and knowing they had Spence on the roster as two undersized ILBs they saw McCullers there in the 6th rd. as a future plugger in the middle of the DL to help keep blockers off of them so they can do their thing. I agree, as I think we’ve improved in all 3 phases of the game and can’t wait for the season to start.

  • joed32

Just poor arithmetic, sorry about that. I saw 1985 as his BD and came up with 24 instead of 29.
