Steelers 2014 Pre Training Camp Roster Polls: Will WR Derek Moye Make The Final 53?

The Pittsburgh Steelers won’t begin training camp for two more weeks, so I thought we would spend this week talking about a few players that many believe will have a decent shot at making the final 53 man roster. Basically, these are players that we can’t quite consider locks, but do consider as being on the bubble.

After reading the recap of the player that we highlight, you can cast your vote as to whether or not you think that player will make the final 53 man roster. Each poll will run for three days.

The fourth player up in this series is wide receiver Derek Moye.

2013 Season Recap:

Moye surprised several people last year when he made the Steelers 53 man roster out of training camp. In order to get that roster spot, he had to beat out Justin Brown, a sixth-round draft pick and former Penn State teammate of his. As far as Moye’s contributions on offense last season for the Steelers, they were few as he only dressed for seven games and played 53 total snaps. He did catch two passes for 20 yards and a touchdown in his limited playing time. More importantly is the fact that Moye barely played on special teams during the games he was active for. We have him down as playing on just four special teams plays in total.

2014 Outlook:

Moye really has his work cut out for him again this year in training camp as he not only has to beat out Brown again for a roster spot, but Darrius Heyward-Bey as well. The fact that Moye played so little last year on special teams during the games that he dressed for is perhaps the most concerning thing right now. As a fourth or fifth wide receiver this year, special teams play will be a must.

Moye is history! To me competition is greater this year than last year.

  • steeltown

I remember reading that Moye was working closely with Coach Danny Smith on special teams responsibilities, which is good, but it is still going to be tough for him to make the club this year.

I’ll say no, he does not make the 53man roster this year, especially if he still has some PS eligibility.

  • Kurt Williams

Antonio Brown, Markus Wheaton, Lance Moore, Martavis Bryant and Justin Brown. No Derek Moye this year.

  • cencalsteeler

Moye’s strength is his height. We now have that with Bryant. Other than the preseason catch and the run down from behind, I don’t see his play jumping out at me. But, training camps around the corner, so we’ll see.

  • Crowned

Absolutely not. I can’t believe the poll results.

  • patrick Mayfield

He’s an outer bubble guy to me this year so I said no.

  • Spencer Krick

I’ll pose another question. If Moye is cut do you think he catches on somewhere else?

  • ApexSteel

Probably not unless J Brown gets injured.

  • joed32

I agree that they may only carry 5 + Archer.

  • Since when is Derek Moye a rookie LB? lol Anyway, I reall hope this kid makes the team. I’ve been a strong supporter of Moye ever since I first saw him play with the team. If he doesn’t make the active roster, I hope he will agree to join the practice squad. Chances are, all of our starting WRs won’t stay completely healthy all year long and Moye could be activated from the practice squad in their place.

  • Scot Hickerson

No Moye this year. Bryant makes Moye expendable. Justin B. beats him out. Justin is a better route runner and more of a possession reciever and gives an added demention. If they carry more than 5 they go with DHB.

Everything will depend upon what every receiver not named Antonio Brown or Lance Moore does when it really counts, when they line up against real competition. Matavius Bryant probably, but not necessarily, gets a rookie pass here, and there are, of course, lots of expectations re: Marcus Wheaton’s progress.

Things have a way of changing when there’s real opposition on the other side of the ball, and all the players mentioned are talented enough to help the Steelers, Derek Moye included.

    Let the games begin!
