Steelers 2014 Pre Training Camp Roster Polls: Will WR Justin Brown Make The Final 53?

The Pittsburgh Steelers won’t begin training camp for two more weeks, so I thought we would spend this week talking about a few players that many believe will have a decent shot at making the final 53 man roster. Basically, these are players that we can’t quite consider locks, but do consider as being on the bubble.

After reading the recap of the player that we highlight, you can cast your vote as to whether or not you think that player will make the final 53 man roster. Each poll will run for three days.

The sixth player up in this series is second-year wide receiver Justin Brown.

2013 Season Recap:

Brown, the Steelers first of two sixth-round draft picks last year, failed to beat out Derek Moye for a spot on the 53 man roster as a rookie and as a result, he spent the entire season on the practice squad. With all of the juggling that normally takes place during a season as far as the practice squad goes, it says a lot that the Oklahoma product was never once released from the eight man unit.

2014 Outlook:

Brown has received quite a few accolades so far this offseason and he will once again be battling Moye for a spot on the final 53 man roster. In addition to Moye, veteran Darrius Heyward-Bey was also added during the offseason and figures to push both of the youngsters.

According to the reports, Brown was asked to play all three wide receiver spots during several OTA practices whenever Markus Wheaton was limited with an undisclosed injury. In addition, like Moye, he has been working closely with special teams coach Danny Smith during the offseason in order to learn what he’ll have to show on his units during the preseason to better strengthen his worth to the team.

It’s my hope that he makes the roster because between DHB, Moye, and JB at least J. Brown has the most punt return experience and capability. It would be good to have another guy on the roster both to relieve our #1 WR of having to return punts and as a backup to Archer in case of injury. We may see him get his chance as a PR this preseason.

I said this last year, I thought JB had that last spot until the last few weeks of pre season. I think the entire year with the play book and on the practice squad seized the moment for Moye over Brown in those final weeks.

The upside of Brown now that he has a better grip on the playbook is also his size 6’3″ he has a better nfl body than Moye and he already has better hands and runs better routes than Bey. A guy that will go across the middle and move the chains.

On top of that is his special teams experience in college as well as a return for a td. I think the Steelers found another gem in the sixth round and we are just starting to see what Justins potential might be.

I’m very excited to see what brown can bring to the table this year. All these compliments from roethlisberger and Mann ,I can’t help but wonder how good this kid has gotten.Brown, spence, and Blake and Wheaton are four guys I’m really hoping takes the next step forward.Cant wait to see first four picks as well.I can’t help but think moye,DhB ,and carter don’t make this roster. This season will tell a lot about what this team has going forward. This should be the most exciting pre season I can remember in years.

  • Weiss Chad

    Well said

  • cencalsteeler

Agree. We all know the Steelers like multipositional players. That’s an advantage JB has. Also, glad you hit on body types. Sending Moye across the middle would remind me of everytime I held my breath when Rainey got the ball.

  • Matt Manzo

His ability to cover and return on special teams will tip the scales this year! He’s one of those developmental guys that I hope we stick with.

  • I hope Moye beats him out again.

  • Aric Brown

Steelers carry 5 WR at an absolute max… AB, Wheaton, and Lance Moore are locks and I believe Bryant finds a way on the squad as well that leaves 1 spot for Moye, Brown, or DHB… or they could choose to use Dri as the #5

  • srdan

I agree. But dri doesn’t count as the one

At 8-8 for two years straight, players on the bubble should be nervous I.E. Moye! Think Brown will be given an opportunity to earn the spot because he is on the rise. DHB can only earn a spot if he scores 3 or more exciting touchdowns in the preseason. Think Steelers are trying to go with a youth movement to create big plays on offense and to avoid them on D

  • After hearing his name more than Moye’s or DHB’s it seems like he has the edge right now. I went ahead and voted yes, he does make the roster. Would be nice to have Moye on the practice squad if he were eligible. I think we’ll know without a doubt once we see them in camp/preseason action.

  • I disagree. Moye is 6’5″ and around 215lbs. Although he’s really not a kick returner, I still like his skill set and he can bulk up just a bit more. Ben needs all the taller WRs he can get. He likes tall WRs and he likes Moye. They practiced together during the off-season so they should have developed somewhat of a rapport by now. Keep Derek Moye, keep Darrius Heyward-Bey and lose Justin Brown. Dri Archer will do fine returning kicks as well as Antonio Brown will.

  • Milliken Steeler

Moye has had three years to get thicker and still has a very slim body. He has zero return experience and as far as height goes, Justin is 6’3″. Out of the Wide Receivers, that makes him the second tallest guy.

I understand your point on Moye however, I think Justin has more of an upside and the better ability to get open and move the chains.

We will see here very soon. I do agree that Bey is probably going to be one of the odd men out though.

  • steeltown

    I think he does.

  • SteveM2

FYI, Derek Moye had extensive punt return experience in high school, and also a bit more at PSU.

  • Milliken Steeler

Very little. Brown had 71 returns and a TD. In FOUR years Moye had 4 returns period. Brown was used consistently at Penn State and Oklahoma as a return man.

I understand you trying to make a point however, 1 return a year really wouldn’t be qualified as experience especially versus 71 returns.

  • SteveM2

You said zero, Millliken, so don’t try running away from that.

  • Milliken Steeler

Seriously Steve? lol 4 returns in four years equates to zero experience. Not to be confused with how close 4 and 71 are though. Okay, let training camp begin…enough of this:)

  • Aric Brown

I dont think he does either… i think its DHB

  • One of the best WRs (if not the best WR) the Steelers ever had was John Stallworth. He was a tall slender body, kind of like Moye. I know I said he could bulk up just a bit more, but I don’t always agree with the whole ‘he needs to bulk-up’ theory. Could he use a few more pounds? Maybe. The kid is not afraid to go over the middle and he goes after the ball no matter how many defensive players are about to smash him into the ground. Wes Welker is a little punk and look what he did when he was with the Cheatriots. It’s all about talent and toughness no matter how big (or small) you are. Whatever happens, I hope we keep Moye.
