LB James Harrison Not Expected To Sign With Cardinals

Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison is not expected to sign with the Arizona Cardinals after visiting with them on Friday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

According to a Friday report by the Associated Press, Harrison met with Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians, who said the 36-year-old linebackers is “in good shape”.

Harrison played in 15 regular season games last year with Cincinnati Bengals, but was released this past March. The former undrafted free agent soon made it known following being let go by the Bengals that he wanted to return to Pittsburgh in 2014 to close out his career.

The Steelers currently look set at the outside linebacker position headed into the 2014 regular season, so Harrison more than likely would be on the short list of players to look at should injuries strike

Why not replace Carter with Harrison? I think we’d all be more comfortable with OLB depth if we switched those two. Carter will be gone after the season anyway, why not give Deebo a chance to provide veteran leadership/mentorship/presence and quality depth. And to officially retire as a steeler to boot.

  • James Miles

He must be washed up if Pittsburgh West doesn’t want him!

  • Bradys_Dad

I think that a whole lot of us feel that way. Carter just isn’t the right fit in our system and Lord knows we could use Deebo’s Leadership and attitude. I bet he’d be willing to sign a 2 year deal much like Keisel’s (3 mil for 2 years knowing that the 2nd year much more than likely will never come to fruition). It’s a hair above the Vet min and makes it worthwhile for a Vet to put his body through one more year of hell.

  • steelster

Pittsburgh west is a better team than Pittsburgh east. I guess he may end up on the east squad.

We are not set with Carter! Harrison coming back to fit into a rotation would be way better than Carter. Jack Ham would be better than Carter right now!

  • joed32

Is he willing to be a back up? I’m not sure about him being a mentor, he acts like a grouch and we have Porter as a mentor. If James is willing to just be a backup then fine, but if he insists on being a starter then no.

  • steelster

Nice to hear someone say this. He may be a locker room distraction and bad mouth teammates.

  • Jacque Strappe

Has he EVER been that kind of teammate? Not to mention the relationship he has with Lebeau. Anyone who would argue that he’s not an upgrade over Carter needs a lobotomy.

  • steelster

    You’re missing the point.

  • steeltown

Exactly, they’ll both be gone next year regardless, it’s not like we’d be losing a young promising player..

  • steeltown

He wasn’t a main starter for Cinci

  • Kevin Artis

Harrison doesn’t play special teams. I would like to have Harrison back as well because I think JJ isn’t quite ready yet and give us an insurance policy. But at 36 years old I wonder how much he has left.

  • steeltown

That’s the only downside IMO, not playing special teams

  • Jason

I think we’re all neglecting the fact that he still probably demands more $ than he’s worth

  • Jollyrob68

I’m sure it was a ploy to try and get the Steelers to sign him.

  • Jacque Strappe

What is the point? There’s nothing that would give anyone pause about James. Heck, even the Bengals went on about what a good teammate he was. He’s an upgrade from what we have. That’s all that matters to me.

  • Dan

    Worked for Keisel.

  • steelster

My point is he may disrupt team chemistry and he can’t play special teams. Since garvin is a swing lb, why not make him the backup olb and cut carter.

  • mrwirez

James Harrison can only blame James Harrison. He walked, and is now unemployed. He would be in his final year…. IF he made the team.

  • Charles Mullins

It is not about cutting carter it is about upgrading the OLBs. Until the last game JJ had showed no signs of having a break out year. Timmons took 3-4 years to get it and it has taken JW just as long to get it. No reason for JJ to be expected to be ready just yet. Harrison is an injury risk because of his age, but he should still be in competiton to be the best OLB we have if they sign him.

  • Phillip Dssturk Dobrensky

He was out of his element in Cincinnati at 4 3. He’s was never a distraction in th burg. He is an upgrade to Carter at any level.

  • Phillip Dssturk Dobrensky

    I hope they do.

  • James Miles

You don’t know that West is better than East but we shall soon find out. I am willing to bet they are NOT!! Let the season begin

  • Phillip Dssturk Dobrensky

James made a calculated error. He didn’t want what Pittsburgh offered and ended up with less with Cincinnati. Let him return it will be good for us.

  • steelster

I’m not sure he’s as good as moat’s right now. He should retire and go out with some dignity

  • frednash

The reason Harrison is not here?

Tomlin has no way to control the beast

    Bill Cowher couldn’t

    Marvin didn’t

    Only Roger did..

  • steelster

The cards were much better last year. They have lost some key defensive players this year but are still a good team.

  • DoctorNoah

Dramatic. But silly. Harrison is a good guy and not some crazy, out of control person. Goodell only made him consider retirement out of frustration.

  • Leon Mcnair

  • Leon Mcnair

True they need to release carter and sign Harrison and let him and jones split

  • BlackNGold

He used to play special teams for us. Its not really a foreign concept to him

  • Leon Mcnair

If u think the cardinals are better than go cheer for them

  • steelster

Why can’t i say a team might be better than the steelers?

  • blackandgoldBullion

Cards had a great D last year and if their offense could have scored a few more points they had a chance of winning a Super Bowl. The were a better team than the Steelers last year and will probably continue to be this year as well.

Now don’t tell me who I should route for, because I’ve been cheering for the Steelers for 45 years and will continue to do so until the day I die.

  • Reese Dare

Well said Bullion. As a Steeler’s Fan that lives in Phoenix..I can attest that the Cardinals were a better team last season. I expect them to hit 10 wins this year even while competing in a stellar division. My Steelers though..I’m just hoping the preseason was a joke or else we’re in for a looooong season.

  • Tanner Blackman

Sign Pryor cut Landry Sign James cut Carter and see what our team will look like then

  • blackandgoldBullion

I felt for the Cards last year. Suspension, injuries and still the D was stellar. I get the sneaking suspicion that their O will improve this year, but will the D hold up with the injuries? It’s going to be tough. The only thing going for them is the post Super Bowl effect for the Seahawks. And it might be real tough for the 49ers to continue to be this good, when you get so close but can’t get over the hump, there is usually a big letdown. We shall see.

  • Smashmouth

i believe that between harrisons on the field intensity and joey porter coaching up our up and coming linebackers the defense would have prime examples of playing D the steeler way so why not cut carter i honestly believe it would be a win win for the team

  • Matt Manzo

    Yes! Please!

  • gene mann

Total agree Carter does not rush the passer and cant set the edge

  • gene mann

sorry but have enough guys to play ST and looked like the Beard played well @ 36

  • gene mann

why not even brink him in for a tryout Carter we know is nothing and Harrison could be used and be effective as a Part time starter

  • Tammie Sherrell Hill

Why not replace carter with anybody that’s the millilion dollar ?

  • All set at the OLB position? I’d take James Harrison over Chris Carter any day. I know James has had his share of injuries, but his back is healed and from the workout videos I’ve watched, he looks to be 100%.

  • William Weaver

Cut Landry jones and sign Terrell Pryor!!

  • Rufus Benard

Harrison chose not to sign with the Cards the Cards wanted to sign him. The Steelers are idiots for not bringing him back. He would instantly become our best pass rusher at OLB, yes better than Worlds. Worlds is terribly over rated.

  • Jones

You say all this based on what tape, again?

  • Meaningsx

    That old man strength though.

  • Geoff Cordner

    Does Carter play ST?

  • Geoff Cordner

Here here! Being a fan means being able to say your team isn’t as good as another team. Being a homer is always thinking your team is the best.

  • blackandgoldBullion

The scary thing is that he would instantly provide more pressure than any other LB they have. Also he would thoroughly embarrass all the youngsters in the weight room thus providing a great example. The young guys would realize how hard they need to work to become great. The problem is that the young guys also need to get in there and play and learn. What a conundrum.
