Panthers QB Cam Newton Expected To Miss Steelers Game With Rib Injury

It doesn’t look like the Pittsburgh Steelers will facing Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in the preseason finale Thursday night at Heinz Field after all.

According to Steve Reed of the Associated Press, Newton has a hairline fracture in his ribs and thus won’t be playing against the Steelers this week. Panthers head coach Ron Rivera thinks Newton will play in the Panthers regular-season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, however, according to Reed.

With Newton now likely to sit Thursday night, Panthers backup quarterback Derek Anderson will likely start against the Steelers. So far in the three games that he has played during the preseason, Anderson is 14-of-22 passing for 234 and two touchdowns.

The Steelers will play the Panthers on the road this season as the two teams will square off in Week 3.

I dont know if thats good or bad for the steelers. Imagine if anderson makes our D look bad, gulp!

  • ApexSteel

Ah the defense really needed that test.

  • pat

I think regardless of Cam playing or not we would still run a pretty vanilla playbook offense and defense being that we play them again on the road in week 3 when it counts

  • steeltown

I always remember that one year in Cleveland when Anderson threw for 5TDs in one game vs Cincinnati, think there was nearly 100pts scored in that game

  • Kevin Artis

for our d Derek Anderson is still a test.

  • Ike Evans

Not really my concern but…..what is Carolina doing? They dont have a strong offensive line or weapons around Cam..I mean, he has Cotch who is super solid but other then that…a rookie and tiquan underwood lol brutal

  • steeltown

    They just cut Underwood

  • Ike Evans

    Lmao….even worse

  • Aric Brown

Great news for my fantasy team I just love starting out the year with an Ailing quarterback

  • Aric Brown

The way I see it with our without Cam the Panthers offense is sub-par at best… the only benefits for testing our defense COULD be stopping there run, but now with Cam out I expect them to load the box

  • Aric Brown

I think in the absence of Cam they will probably run it a bit more to figure out there ever confusing RB pecking order.. which could still prove to be a good test for our run D… I didn’t expect the pass D to get tested too much by Carolinas passing “attack”

  • Aric Brown

Clevelands last playoff quarterback if I’m not mistaken.. the 10-6 browns won the division that year I believe on a tie breaker over the 10-6 steelers

  • 2443scott

he might be out but anderson knows the steeler def he played them enough more then cam has so it be a bigger test with him then cam at qb…

  • steeltown

I think we still took 1st place in the Division that year

  • Aric Brown

Ya just checked looks like they lost @ pittsburgh the last time they were in the playoffs in the Wild Card round

  • Jason

Yeah took a big comeback to win 36-33. Arians was Cleveland O coordinator

  • gdeuce

    are you a new fan?

  • Aric Brown

Because I don’t precisely remember the 2002 season?
