Roethlisberger Expecting To Play Entire First Half Against Eagles

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a short week to prepare for their Thursday night game against the Philadelphia Eagles but quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is readying himself to play the entire first half, according to Scott Brown of

Roethlisberger wll likely be surrounded by the rest of the first-team offense on the road against the Eagles as the third preseason game is generally used as a tune-up for the regular season.

I the third preseason game last year against the Kansas City Chiefs, Roethlisberger played the entire first half before giving way to backup Bruce Gradkowski in the second half. Roethlisberger was 13-of-19 against the Chiefs in that game for 166 yards and a touchdown pass to running back Jonathan Dwyer.

The Steelers worked on their no-huddle offense this past Saturday night against the Buffalo Bills, so it will be interesting to see if they utilize it some on the road this week against the Eagles. According to Brown, Roethlisberger would like to get at least one no-huddle series on road under his belt.

Ben seems to have a high level of dedication this year

I don’t like it. The guy was pretty frickin’ sharp Saturday and there is absolutely no reason to risk what could be a great season. The only reason I can imagine is that they want the like of DHB and others to get a chance to show what they can do ala first team talent. If Mike Adams is on the field with Ben late into the 2nd quarter………accident waiting to happen.

I’m with you. 2 series and he’s done if I’m steering the ship.

  • ApexSteel

It’s the third preseason game. The entire first team offense will play the first half. They’ve protected him great the past two games and they need this game to try put it all together before the games actually matter.

The ghost of past injuries always hovers over out team. If BB is going to get hurt, he’s going to get hurt. That is called Karma. In the other hand, Nirvana is what we call 7th heavens. Lets think of Nirvana as our Karma. POSITIVE is the word.

Then you haven seen football the last 7 years or so. Every third preseason game is treated as a real game. there is game planning and starters are in the entire first half, sometimes more. The last preseason game the starters might play one series if any. The third is the most important preseason game.

Like the previous post mentioned, it would be nice to see what the WR’s and RB’s can do with the first team O-line and Ben in there. It kind of gives them an honest chance to see what they can accomplish. It would be nice, but the first stringers also want to work on their timing. What to do? What to do? That’s the conundrum.

Can’t wait for this game. Hope there’s a bit more concentration on the running game. I’d love to see 20 combined carries for Bell and Blount.

  • William Weaver

Waste of time if Landry jones plays any in the second half. If we need 3 QB’s on the 53 then I vote for anyone other then! Who doesn’t want that pick back now?

  • Matt Manzo

The dream would’ve been to take Shark with that pick, some stud w/ Sharks pick. Have two 3rd rounders this last draft, plus one after sending Sanders to the Pats! That would’ve been sick!

  • steeltown

In hindsight, maybe, but he’s still in his 2nd preseason. The picks I want back are the Limas Sweed pick, the Mike Adams pick and the Curtis Brown pick… I don’t fret much over 4th Rd and later

  • pat

I hoping the new wrs get more playing time with Ben. Sit AB after the first quarter let Bryant DHB and Brown play some with Ben

  • frednash

let bb throw to the other wideouts tight ends and running backs
you need to see them with the firstet team to be able to grade them
you cant worry about bb getting hurt
like Isaias says live in a postive frame of mind
dont be afraid of what if!

I want to see Justin Brown get more reps with the ones this Thursday. Perhaps line him up with Archer/Wheaton/AB on one side and let him block for that screen but also pass to him from there so defense knows he isn’t just there to block. I’d really like to see the offense go full steam ahead for a series or two by mixing in the no-huddle with the run game. I really don’t think the lack of running game this past Saturday was a sign of things to come. I think it was a side effect of them working more on the no-huddle passing attack. They (first team) seemed to focus on the run more in the first game and the no-huddle in the second game. I want to see them bring the two together this week before they hand it over to the 2s and 3s.
Overall I like the improvement I do see from one week to the next. Time to tune up for the Browns in week one and get this season going.

  • joed32

Yep, it’s been that way for a long time and every team does it.

  • srdan

    I’ll be therrrrr!

  • William Weaver

A lot of talent 4th round and later.

  • steeltown

Definitely, I wont argue that but the % that you hit on your picks goes way down once you reach the mid-late Rds, you’d like to hit on them all of course, but you sure as hell better hit on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Rds

  • CodeNameJerk

First game they wanted to establish the run, second game the no huddle passing attack. I suspect they’re try and put both together Thursday. And It would be nice to see guys like Justin Brown get some reps with the first team, you’ll never figure out what he can do with Lindsey Jones throwing to him.

  • Gautama Om

I agree. ONE extra quarter of football is not going to significantly increase risk of injury when compared to, say, how many quarters he played last year (64 quarters) without any serious injury.

  • Alan Felicia

And, Nirvana was an awesome band!
Seriously, can’t believe how people are surprised that the first team plays the entire half Every 3rd Preseason Game. Here’s another news flash: the 1st Team almost never plays in every 4th Preseason Game! LOL!
