Mike Tomlin Currently Has No Plans To Sign Another Punter

Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers placed veteran punter Adam Podlesh on the Reserve/Did Not Report list and after practice head coach Mike Tomlin was asked whether or not he’d be able to compete for the job at some point.

“It is what it is. Right now he’s on that list and his status will remain there until we hear otherwise,” said Tomlin of Podlesh. “Right now we’re working with Brad [Wing] and like the work that he’s doing.”

Tomlin was then asked if he was going to bring in another punter to compete against Wing.

“Not as we stand here right now, no,” replied Tomlin. “Not that I’m opposed to it, but not as we stand here right now.”

By the sound of things, Brad Wing will be given the opportunity to rebound uncontested Saturday night in the Steelers second preseason game against the Buffalo Bills after an uneven showing in the first game against the New York Giants.

Do other teams have this hard of a time finding a punter?!

I was born in the ‘burgh but now live in metro Philly. I watched Wing when he was with the Eagles a couple years back.
Overall, he was pretty good – superior to anything the Steelers had as a P last year. I think his average dropped in the Giants game due to some ‘pooch’ or short field punts, so I don’t think those are a concern; although I heard he DID have one stinker.
Overall, I think he will be an improvement over last year, so that may be why Tomlin is not bringing anyone else in (or else there are not a lot of punters on the open market, which seems hard to believe).

Might as well just let AB punt.

Agreed his performance on Sat was average but like you said those pooch punts 2 of them if i remember correctly dipped that average quite a bit. I did like his net average on his punts. It will be interesting to see what he does this Sat.

Sounds as if they are content w wing as their punter.

There will be about 32 more on the market in a few weeks.

I think they’ll give him this week/weekend to continue to build upon what he’s done so far. If he struggles in the next game, they’ll bring someone else in to compete next week IMO

Imo this guy is ok but definitely not good enough not to have competition
