Steelers LB Sean Spence Getting First-Team Reps Monday With Ryan Shazier Sidelined

It’s been a long road back for Pittsburgh Steelers third-year linebacker Sean Spence, but it looks like all of the speed bumps have now been cleared.

With starting rookie inside linebacker Ryan Shazier sitting out Monday’s practice with an injury suffered late in Sunday’s practice, Spence is the one that is receiving the first-team reps alongside Lawrence Timmons.

This is also the Steelers sixth padded training camp practice in a row and the Miami product hasn’t missed one of them.

Spence missed the first two seasons of his NFL career because of a serious knee injury that he suffered during the Steelers final preseason game of his rookie season. The nerve damage suffered during that injury had several in the Steelers organization wondering if he would ever play again.

The Steelers will play their first preseason game of the 2014 season Saturday night against the New York Giants and Spence should be able to make his triumphant return to the field. It should be an exciting moment for him.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

I know they move a lot of people around in camp and the line-ups change sometimes day to day, but THIS IS AWESOME! Way to go Spence!

Nice. I was just discussing this on Shazier’s injury post about wether or not Spence was ready to come in as the Mack incase Shazier is ever injured. Real nice cushion we have at ILB with Spence and Williams at both spots.

    I’m pulling for Sean Spence.

This kids a baller!!Gotta figure out how to get him on field

  • Weiss Chad

IMO if it was our four best lbs on the field not going by inside or outside just our four best, this kid would be on the field with shazier,Timmons ,and worilds .

  • Addison

Shazier/Spense the future ILB after Timmons? Fastest defense in the league!

  • ApexSteel

    Not that good.

I asked this yesterday after the injury about who the next man up was, and was told it was Williams, but I think my gut was right. The ideal fit behind Shazier is Spence. Timmons has moved over to the spot last year played by Foote/Wilson/Williams/Garvin, and the next man up there will be Williams, but I truly believe that Spence is a better fit for Shazier’s spot. His game is the most similar and allows DL to not have to change much to function.

always knew he would be back

  • Jones

I’m really pulling for him, but the real question is how did he look out there?

  • Jason

Based on what? I’m pulling for this kid to make a comeback as much as anyone but people act as though he was a can’t miss draft pick. He was a third rounder which doesn’t mean he can’t blossom into something special but we’ve never seen him play a down of meaningful NFL football.

  • Jason

Let’s wait until one of them makes their first NFL tackle before we trust the future to them.

Yeah no doubt. That’s the deal. They committed to moving Timmons over to Buck, but if you bring in Williams you have to put him at Buck and Timmons back at Mack. The question becomes is Spence capable of coming in as 2nd team Mack with Timmons and being just as good or better as a Timmons/Williams combo. Probably a little too early still, but at least he’s this far along and I’m sure the coaches are getting a good look at that grouping now.

I don’t know about top 4, but definitely top 5. My good friend is a huge Hurricanes fan, and I watch a lot of games and Spence was the best player on the field a lot of times with that defense. He was a 3rd rounder strictly because of his size. If he was taller he woulda been a late 1st/2nd round guy.

  • walter mason

Has he impressed anyone besides actually playing football again?

  • Lewis

I don’t know for sure either, but what I do feel is if Spence is up to pre-injury speed, his style and attributes fit right in. Shazier, Timmons, Spence. Those are some pretty dang athletic ILBs. Williams is good too, but physically I feel Spence is more like those other two I mentioned.

  • Weiss Chad

I think he will suprise you.Maybe I’m going by his college tape to much and all the hype about him before he got hurt.Adding in what the steelers must think of him to hold onto him for two yrs when it looked almost certain he wouldn’t make his way back. This kid just always seems to be around the ball. The fact that he got the call today to start also says something.Maybe I’m drinking the kool aid too much idk.Its a mixture of college tape, hype, and reading the tea leaves, listening to what coaches had to say about him..He has a high football iq .

  • Carlos

Couldn‘t be happier, this kid has earned every second on that uniform, he truly represents the best of this organization and this sport. #Spence

  • Labrat0116

Arthur Moates ain’t no sloach either!

He’s very underrated! Watch and see!

  • Weiss Chad

Tell me again how he’s not that good!!!

  • ApexSteel

Ok he’s not. Not even close to being one of the top 4 LBs on the team.
