Steelers Not Expected To Play QB Ben Roethlisberger Against Panthers

You likely won’t have to worry about Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger getting injured in the preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers as the veteran said Monday he’s not expecting to play Thursday night, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

So far during the preseason, Roethlisberger is 24-of-37 passing for 331 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in the three games he has played in.

With Roethlisberger likely to sit out Thursday night, we could see a heavy dose of third-string quarterback Landry Jones, who has not looked sharp in his limited playing time during the preseason. It is unknown if backup Bruce Gradkowski will start Thursday night during the Panthers.

The Panthers will also rest their starting quarterback Thursday night at Heinz Field as Cam Newton is currently trying to recover from a rib injury.

If it wasn’t for the WR depth issues (not knowing who should REALLY stick or not)…i’d say play Landry the entire game. We know what we have with Gradkowski.

  • Crowned

I’m ready to see who wants it more, Justin brown or DHB?

  • AzheDraven

I want both. Maybe I’d kick Landry off to fit DHB and JBrown

  • PA2AK

Would be good with this. These are the WR depth issues I’m talking about. If we play Landry the entire game…will it really be a good judge of the WR depth?

  • srdan

    i use to trust buchette

  • srdan

im pulling for dhb. Brown hasn’t shown me anything. But I didnt go to Latrobe.

  • T R

Playing Landry Jones, will not help Justin or DHB win roster spots. .hell it might make them lose they spots.. ugh @ Landry

  • steeltown

I don’t know how I feel about this.. normally I would be in agreement this close to the regular season, at the very least Gradkowski should get a few series

  • sweetleb

come on ed, yir better than that.

  • Jeff

If Ben isn’t playing, I would rather Gradkowski take the majority of the snaps in the game… It’s already apparent what we have in Landry Jones, which is a dud, and I’d rather get Bruce as many live reps as possible in case we actually need him during the regular season.

  • steeltown

Agreed. Not to mention with Grad in there it means more quality snaps for the WRs, RBs and Offense as a whole

  • afrazier9

Why not get a look at brandon kay . I know it’s kind of meaningless but really it isn’t you know one thing i hate is we always are trying to fit a round peg into a square whole because we don’t want to admit we bought the wrong peg (L.Jones, C. Carter, Z. Hood) all case of the round peg. We have nothing to loose by looking at this kid over Jones who is by almeans one of the worst picks i have seen for so many reason not only did we not need a qb but a waste of pick when we have so many more wholes case in point CB. Dave what do you think?

  • Steelers12328882

He will be cut tomorrow. Most likely, anyways.

  • PA2AK

we still need to get some more looks at the WRs…that’s why.

  • Steelers12328882

I’m definitely in the minority here, but I want to see Landry start or at least play the majority of the game. This is Gradkowski’s 9th year. I don’t need to see him anymore, and just because he’s better doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll help anyone win a job. There’s only 3 players on offense I care about anyways; Blanchflower, DHB and Justin Brown. The rest of the game all I want to see is the defense play, so who cares if our offense sucks.

  • afrazier9

but with jones playing will we really get a look?

  • srdan

We are likely to get a look at our receivers tackling ability with Jones throwing teh ball.

  • cencalsteeler

Your post definitely made me chuckle, there. It’s make it or break it time for Landry, let’s see what you got!

  • SteelerFanInMD

After last week’s poor showing by the whole team, I would like to see all of the starters get some work in this game. They can’t afford to start the season like they did last year (remember 0-4?) or they will be edged out of a playoff spot again.

  • PA2AK

If that’s your concern…why advocate for Kay? You’re right, Jones won’t give us a good look. I’m almost leaning toward playing Gradkowski all game just so we can weed out which WR needs to stay and cut Jones outright.

  • PA2AK

So far they aren’t and it will be very unlikely to start the same way….
Starting RB Out. Starting TE Out. 2nd TE Out. Lose Starting C and captain. Lose Starting LB. Lose RB. I’m not a fan of crying ‘injuries’, but let’s not forget how last season REALLY started.

  • Leon Mcnair

True and plus dhb is a vet let brown go back to the ps

  • WilliamSekinger

The way Landry Jones has been playing, I’d be afraid to put Gradkowski in with the 1s. I mean, if he gets hurt, Landry becomes the #2 guy! Just play Landry the first half and Kay the second if he doesn’t get cut on Tuesday.

  • 2443scott

i see no need to play ben or off…….but def sure needs another good look at from starters to 2nd stringers

  • Bradys_Dad

Do you think he’d be a good candidate for the PS ? Especially if we only keep 2 QBs ? I really think that Landry has worn out his welcome and it’d be a wasted roster slot to hold on to him.

  • PA2AK

    haha good point!

  • Still_JPDQ

I can’t see any scenario where the benefits would outweigh the risks of playing Ben in this last game. By all accounts, he had a bad game last week. It happens. Historically, it’s rare he has two bad games back to back, so I’ve no concerns at all about him being ready to play when it counts.

Gradkowski – Hmm. Someone made a good point below (in jest or not) about knowing that Bruce is the No. 2 guy, but if he gets hurt, we have Jones or Kay as our No. 2? I’d be content to play Jones and Kay exclusively to see if one can make a definitive step to justify being No. 3.

  • Steel PAul

I expect the team will also sit a large number of starters as well. That’s too bad. The team isn’t ready. They could really use another game to prepare.

I know it’s a meaningless game. But practices and scrimmages are meaningless as far as records go too. They’re necessary to get better though.

Even Ben could use more time with the offense. He looked pretty off against Philly. But more than anything, this defense has a LOT of work to do.

I say play them for a half and get some more work in!

  • Steelers12328882

Have no idea. Never seen him take a snap.

  • Tammie Sherrell Hill

Just play grad first qtr to see which wr is worth keeping then play kay 2nd and third to solidify getting rid of jones THEN let jones play fouth qtr after so he can try and save his job after seeing kay play
