Steelers Film Room: LB Jarvis Jones Registers Sack Against Giants

Pittsburgh Steelers second-year linebacker Jarvis Jones only managed one quarterback sack during his rookie season and it goes without saying that number needs to improve drastically in 2014. During the Saturday night preseason opener against the New York Giants, Jones notched his first sack of 2014 against backup left tackle Charles Brown.

Jones talked about the first quarter sack of Giants quarterback Eli Manning after the game.

“The tackle jumped outside and gave me the inside,” Jones said, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “He gave me room to work on the inside and I took the inside and got up field.”

While we aren’t privy to All-22 camera angles during the preseason, we do have a few animated gifs from the broadcast and, along with a few screen grabs so you can see what happened on the play.

At the snap, Brown does jump outside a bit and while he does get his hands up right away, his right foot is not firmly set when Jones counters inside. Jones does a good job of using his hands in order to keep Brown’s hands off of him. This forces the gate to open just enough for Jones to get through.

Jones has his eyes in the Giants backfield the entire time and while he initially falls for the play-action fake to the running back, he quickly changes his direction in order to get after Manning.

Manning nearly sidesteps Jones, but the former first-round draft pick is able to get just enough of the Giants quarterback right ankle to bring him down to finish the sack.

We hate to emphasize that Brown is not a starter, but regardless, it’s great technique that Jones used on the play and hopefully we see this continue throughout the rest pf the preseason and into 2014.

The Steelers will host the Buffalo Bills Saturday night at Heinz Field and they will also scrimmage them twice later this week leading up to the game. It is unknown whether or not Bills starting left tackle Cordy Glenn will play after being activated off of the Non-Football Illness list Saturday. Should he be unable to play Saturday night, Jones could see a heavy dose of rookie seventh-round pick Seantrel Henderson. Should that wind up being his opponent, Jones will be expected to school the Miami product.

There’s good pressure from the entire line on this play. Worilds gets held by 84 on a double team (hooks his arm to avoid getting beat), and 91 collapses the pocket as Jones is getting through.

  • Kurt Williams

Jones sure has quickness and beat him with his hands, good to see Tuitt with penetration as well.

  • 20Stoney

Nice to see an inside counter move from Jarvis!

Watch the arm extension of Tuitt and subsequent push back. Ziggy who?

  • blackandgoldBullion

The safety comes flying in to screw up Manning’s first read. It’s a pick-6 if he throws it. So Eli holds on and looks elsewhere, but it’s too late. Everyone does their job up front either hanging in their against double teams, or getting to the QB, Jones and Tuitt. Let’s hope this is a sign of things to come for the future of this D.

  • nicolaisim

Great observation. Mitchell looks real fast on that play.

  • dgh57

Jones and Tuitt were both just given 12 snaps in this first game so it’s at least encouraging to see both doing excellent jobs on this play!

  • WilliamSekinger

I really like the fact that Jones waits until he is up on the tackle before countering inside. A move to the inside any earlier would have likely allowed the tackle to adjust.

  • steeltown

I love this play, Tuitt gets late penetration and shows some quickness and Jarvis shows off some strength in his hands but slapping away the OTs hands, if he can consistently do this it will help greatly as he has good short area quickness

  • blackandgoldBullion

Yup. He smelled something and acted immediately, like Polamalu does sometimes.

  • Code Warrior

Absolutely. That’s what I took away from this play as well. If the coverage can take away the first read and the rush gets home before the second, it’s gonna be a nice season. Nice to see an inside move (and a successful one at that) from JJ. I believe in Coach Peezy!

  • Jacque Strappe

JJ is gonna be solid this season. But I think Tuitt is gonna be a star.

  • 2443scott

well he got as many now as he had all last season thats a improvement already maybe haveing joey there is showing the signs already of a influence …i was surprised though of the weakness in middle of the def …..

  • Steve

Jones need to be cautious taking the inside move. He did that a few times last year and they ran outside, right around him.

  • keth Naab

it’s not a starter, but you know what? I’ll take it. Hopefully he can build on this. It wasn’t a gimme sack, he beat the OT. I’m happy with that. Of course, he’s a 1st rounder, one would hope he could do this, but it’s something, and right now, that’s what we need from JJones.

  • keth Naab

yes, he gave up his gap on a few run plays quite often, but it does seem that he didn’t really make his inside move until the play-action fake was completed

  • keth Naab

we’ve been saying “Ziggy who” for a few years now. 😛 The real test will be if we start saying “Brett Who” and then we know we’ve hit a grand slam when we say “Aaron who?”

  • keth Naab

great catch, upon rewatching, that’s exactly what happened, great perspective!

  • Steve

Noticed the game is on NFL network again this afternoon.

  • Steve

If Eli gets around Jones Tuitt got him.

  • Crowned

Tuitt looked really good at the POA and with penetration all night to me, one play he almost had the runningback 2-3 yards behind the LOS. I really want to see him get some more first team reps over Cam Thomas, although admittedly Cam looked really good himself. I’m just ready to see Tuitt takeover the world.

  • Steve

If Eli got around Jones he had nice yardage.

  • Ike Evans

If eli got around jj tuitt wouldve got him

  • wdhammer

don’t get excited, a second string bum got beat by jones. looks lost still. a bust is in the works..

  • lost? What jarvis did there was nice.. Dude tried to get his hands on him, he slapped his arms to the opposite direction creating awesome separation / space to run through.. Soooo.. I dunno guy.. don’t value your opinion anyway.

  • Good catch. Definitely looks like a well executed cover 3

  • wdhammer

you got a long wait son .

  • well in the words of brethren Maynard ‘ who are you to wave your finger, so full of it.’

  • wdhammer

I just call them as I see them . Javis has to do more .1 sack isn’t getting it . 1 a year . I hope he improves but i’m not counting on it ..

  • Alex B

Charles Brown won’t make the Giants? Son, are you high?

  • completely agree but that goes for everybody my friend, everybody.
