Steelers Rookie Stephon Tuitt Shows He Can Move It Against Bills

During the Pittsburgh Steelers 2014 training camp, both head coach Mike Tomlin and defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau praised rookie defensive end Stephon Tuitt for always running to the football. Saturday night in the preseason win over the Buffalo Bills, the Notre Dame product showed why he is worthy of that praise.

On a 3rd and 27 pass play early in the second quarter, Tuitt showed just how well he can move for a player of his size as he raced nearly 30 yards up the field to tackle tight end Scott Chandler after he eluded rookie linebacker Ryan Shazier following a catch.

You can see two different angles of the play below.

Tuitt was reportedly dogged by a hernia and foot problem in 2013 and that is probably what ultimately led to him falling completely out of the first round and into the hands of the Steelers in the second round.

“The big thing was the hernia that he had,” said Steelers defensive line coach John Mitchell following the selection of Tuitt back in May. “He gained weight. If you go back and look at him as a sophomore, he played around 308 to 310. Last year he played around 330 to 335. He was carrying that extra weight with the foot and the hernia, so he didn’t play well. He didn’t play up to his ability.”

As you can clearly tell, Tuitt is no longer hampered by either of those injuries.

Tuitt finished the game against the Bills with three total tackles and a quarterback hurry and played 33 snaps.

I can’t see how Tuitt doesn’t win the starting job before the end of the season. He’s a beast

Wow, Steelers were so lucky to get this guy in the 2nd. What a draft class so far!

  • steeltown

My man Tuitt, glad he’s on our Team

  • Douglas Andrews

Good Hustle big guy! Small things like that will help him win a starting job this year

The great thing is we don’t “need” Tuitt to play every snap this year. We should be able to get a nice rotation at DE (Heyward, Thomas, Tuitt, Mauro, etc). That keeps them all fresh and gives them all experience.

Unless of course two of them get hurt… oh wait… I wasn’t supposed to say that.

That’s why I certainly hope they keep someone like N.Williams or Arnfelt on the PS

  • Aric Brown

    Do it Tuitt

Before the draft I said he was going to be our first round pick. Playing the way he is, it would have been a good pick. Nonetheless, I like the way the cards fell lol.

Amazing how things are shaping up — DL, ILB and S positions were big question marks heading into the offseason and they seem to be relatively deep now. My main concern is the CB and OL depth, more specifically at T. These are the two positions we cannot afford injuries.

If Blake doesn’t start making plays, during games, I bet we sign one of the other teams cuts, before the season starts.

It’s hard to get around tuitt

Was nice hustle by Tuitt. Was it just me or did the Steelers miss a lot of tackles Saturday night?
