Steelers Waive Six More Players Tuesday Afternoon

The Pittsburgh Steelers have finally trimmed their roster down to the league-mandated 75 players as six more players were waived Tuesday afternoon.

Offensive lineman Chris Elkins, running back Tauren Poole, long snapper Luke Ingram, offensive lineman Emmanuel McCray, defensive end Brian Arfelt, and  nose tackle Hebron Fangupo have all been waived.

Earlier on Tuesday the team waived nine players as running back Jordan Hall, running back Miguel Maysonet, wide receiver C.J. Goodwin, wide receiver Kashif Moore, tight end Eric Waters, safety Jordan Dangerfield, cornerback Devin Smith, cornerback Lew Toler, and linebacker Vic So’oto were all let go.

The Steelers will play the Carolina Panthers Thursday night in their preseason finale at Heinz Field and they’ll then have to trim their roster down to 53 players by this time next Saturday.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • joed32

Looking good for McCullers and one of the DEs.

  • AzheDraven

    Bryce over Ingram? Wow.
    Also, another wow for Arnfelt.

  • joed32

Warren might still make it back for opening day. The snapper might be Suisham’s call.

  • 2443scott

will this now make the ones who made it be better in the last preseason game because they made it past the first round of cuts ….i wasnt to sure hebron would be cut on the first cut down ….i thought dangerfield might of also not have been cut on first cut…

  • T R

Well that was a quick on for Luke Ingram. I guess uhm Landry Jones will long snap, well maybe not.. Brice McCain to long snap till Greg Warren is back? Wow who would thunk Guy Whimper would out live so may OLinesman…

  • Ben Saluri

    What happened w/ Arnfelt?

  • steeltown

    LS Bryce Davis

  • T R

oops thats what i mean. Bryce Davis, not Brice McCain.. my bad..

  • steeltown

Somewhat surprised about Ingram, though he’d make it over Davis and what the h@ll happened to Arnfelt this offseason, never would’ve guessed.

Fangupo being released says a lot about how they view McCullers

  • steeltown

Yea I thought Ingram would make it over Davis, but shows what I know. I still think they value Davis’ TE ability

  • T R

guess Bryce Davis is also the back up TE… not sure if you want to chance him on TE if he only LS on deck thou.

  • steeltown

Said the same thing to you, ha!

  • T R

well as fast as they got Luke Ingram to training camp in latrode the day the signed and i watch him walk on field. they may have Ingram stuffed in a locker for save keeping.

  • Lucus Rodriguez

so does this mean the team carries just two TEs? Will Johnson can be used as a TE and so can Bryce Davis

  • Superdriller316

    92 is avalible again!!!!

  • steeltown

Im surprised recently acquired Graham Pocic and Dayonne Nunley aren’t on this list

  • joed32

I am too, but 22 more cuts on Saturday.

  • richheddleson

I think they cut the practice squad among the first cuts for some reason. Maybe so they can clear waivers, and then be added to the PS in 5 days, 8/31. So’oto, Arnfelt, Fangupo, Devon Smith, Dangerfield, Poole, Maysonet, Moore, Waters, & Elkins. These are all names that have been mentioned for the PS by many here. Would like to see if the they did this with last year’s PS.

  • Henry

They didn’t and haven’t done so since 2012 with Jamie McCoy.

  • Bradys_Dad

I’m hoping that Mauro gets a lot time Thursday night. This kid has potential – not ready yet – but potential.

  • Taylor20

Houston going to make it through as our PS RB this year?

  • Zack

Seems pretty obvious they don’t want to keep more than one DE on the practice squad and they like Mauro more than Arnfelt, so they wanted to give him a chance to catch on somewhere else. They might still put him on there if he doesn’t catch elsewhere, but it seems like a gesture of goodwill more than anything.

  • Big White

Isiah Green survives another round of cuts. Steelers must like him a lot more than some of his detractors here.

  • ApexSteel

    B B B B BUT ARNFELT’S POTENTIAL!!!

  • Taylor20

Seems like they made a lot of the harder cuts today, some easier ones to come. At this point we still have Brendon Kay on the squad I believe

  • Taylor20

I agree. Seems like some of these may have been courtesy cuts today

  • 20Stoney

I keep hearing that, but don’t know that I agree with that strategy. What do you do when you let a guy go so he can catch on, and someone you planned on keeping blows out his knee on Thursday? You might wish you kept that guy on the roster as long as possible.

  • James Rogers

The next round of cuts is due Saturday at 4 p.m. E.T., not next Tuesday.

  • NW86

Some interesting cuts today for sure. Arnfelt, Ingram, and Fangupo, on top of Waters, Dangerfield, and So’oto.
Not sure if Ingram’s cut means they actually think Warren will be back for the opener or if they like Davis better than Ingram. My guess is the latter, because Warren definitely isn’t playing Thursday so apparently they are comfortable enough to roll with Davis as long as necessary.

  • cencalsteeler

That’s who I’m rooting for. Talented kid!

  • Shannon Stephenson

I felt Poole had a good shot at making the roster if he could have stayed healthy. Like Dave says “Can’t make the roster in the hot tub.”

  • Addison

Glad they kept Fangupo last year instead ta’amu.

  • sweetleb

could be third true rb on the 53.

  • frednash

He’ll be starting at the end of the season !

    Go Big Dan..

  • Tammie Sherrell Hill

How can they like mauro better than arnfelt (which he is) BUT don’t like nobody better than carter

  • SteelersDepot

CB Devin Smith was waived injured so he will likely revert back to IR after clearing waivers.

  • CW

Might want to really see who’s more worthwhile as a backup quarterback on the practice squad, Kay or Jones or that sack of potatoes that someone left in the dorms after training camp.

  • Ike Evans

Brett Kiesel and Josh Mauro happend….shoot, Mauro still might get cut…either him or nick williams

  • GoSteelerz

I can’t begin to describe how disappointed I am in how we do things. Most of these guys barely had an opportunity to play and show what they can or can’t do. Instead we keep Carter and Will Allen… smh This is why we’re 8-8 and getting worse, we bring guys in and then don’t give them much opportunity to show what they can do… It seems that most of the time the practice squad guys are not taken from the first cuts and about 5 of these cuts I would have wanted on our practice squad. I remember when we had the 3rd string DB’s out there. Ventrone and Dangerfield at safety Toler and Green at CB. This unit forced 2 coverage sacks, and was part of the overall 3rd unit that won the game against the Bills, and they don’t get more opportunities?!?! But other than Green (who got other opportunities and didn’t look good at all), these guys have hardly played… And they keep Green, who we’ve already established from this preseason and all of last year’s practice squad time, we should know what he can’t do… So they just signed Nunley and they think he’s better than Smith and Toler? So’oto has made more plays in this one preseason time with us than Carter has the whole time he’s been here (and that includes the fact that So’oto went up against 2nd and 3rd stringers, because so did Carter), and we keep Carter and cut So’oto… This is why we are declining, we aren’t willing to take a risk. People forget that Chuck Noll’s first year he went 1-13. But he was wiling to take risks and evaluate talent and eventually build a winner… But no we stagnate and decline. If we are going to keep guys like Carter and Will Allen and cut our potential who we’ve barely even had a chance to evaluate, we deserve what we get…

  • 2443scott

maybe so ..but the big man mccullers is so raw and letting hebron go must mean hes done more then hebron has so far this season .

  • gene mann

Arnfelt the camp pick last season is out now on the first round of cuts

  • gene mann

so we have 2 UDFA DL still on the Roster Hemer and Mauro

  • gene mann

I am shocked this Houston Kid that last signing at rb is still on the roster

  • Toddy Bravo

The only thing I can’t understand is why you’re not in the front office yet, or at the very least on the coaching staff. You seem to have it all figured out.

  • GoSteelerz

Sometimes I wish I was!!!! LOL No, I don’t have it all figured out by any means, it’s just when you keep seeing the same things, and they aren’t adjusting, and we’ve been declining… Sometimes people get stuck in a mentality and don’t make the necessary adjustments. It seems we are in danger of that.

  • Toddy Bravo

I like him. When we brought him in I went and watched all the tape on Youtube I could find and came away fairly impressed with his size and physical running style, moreso than Poole, Maysonet, etc. He only had about 700-800 yds in each of his 3 seasons at Indiana, but he averaged 5+ yds/carry (6.7 yds/carry his last year). He also catches the ball out of the backfield very well and has kick return experience (not that it matters much anymore).

  • connfyoozed .

And so might the punter. Wing is holding for him now, isn’t he? I can’t help but think that it’s not just having different long snappers that is helping to cause Shaun to struggle. Plus, Wing isn’t exactly punting all that well.

  • connfyoozed .

The impression I have gotten from reading articles elsewhere is that neither Johnson or Davis is good enough of a TE to play it all that often. Plus, most teams don’t like having their LS play all that much outside of snapping, because if he gets hurt… you get James Harrison. I would think there will be a 3rd TE. If Blanchflower has a good game Thursday, it could be him: if not, it’s Palmer. I don’t think Paulson has a prayer of sticking around.

  • Toddy Bravo

Well bro, I respect your enthusiasm and well thought out response, but we’ll have to disagree on a lot of it. I’m certainly not going to give up on Carter if the coaches aren’t. I saw identical fan reactions to often-cut James Harrison, before he became Defensive MVP, and Jason Worilds, before he broke out and looked like an all-pro last year. People were calling for their heads the same way you and many others are doing with Carter. I’ve just learned to trust the Rooneys and our staff. They’ve brought home more hardware than any other team, so they’ll always get the benefit of the doubt from me.

So’oto was a shocker though. I liked his potential for sure.

  • connfyoozed .

I have to think that Nick Williams has an edge over Josh Mauro, but only because Williams is built more like a “prototypical” 3-4 end. Mauro might be a nice practice squad stash, though.

  • Toddy Bravo

Before the draft, I was screaming for the Steelers to draft Mauro around the 5th round, which is about where he was projected by the “experts.” I guess that means the experts and I can spot talent, but not as good as we think. lol.

  • Tammie Sherrell Hill

I agree with everything goSteelerz said and i wanted to write the same thing but he beat me to it and I would have kept dangerfield in place of will allen but carter/adams /paulson/ Landry jones and will Allen should not be on this team if they plan on being better than 8/8 so oto dangerfield are upgrades imo and waters to ps plus how does a guyy like carter/zumwalt still playing and so oto isn’t makes me a die hard Steelers fan for over 30 yrs question their insight

  • Doni609

Doesn’t take much to figure out the Tomlin ‘clusterfark’.

  • Jake Miller

Mauro is just as “prototypical” as Williams and he has regularly been playing a string ahead of Williams. Edge: Mauro.

  • keth naab

i think Mauro makes the 53, Williams to the practice squad

  • Doni609

Dangerfield and So’Oto in the initial cuts, you’ve got to be kidding me! This is how we’re going to build a winning squad???? Tomlin and Colbert are twin ‘dipsticks’.

  • keth naab

Ta’amu was pretty decent last season for AZ. Apparently he earned equal snaps with Dan Williams as a rotation NT and did well.

  • connfyoozed .

I believe you, as I haven’t been able to see much game or camp action for myself. I was under the impression that Mauro was lighter than the typical 3-4 end, more in the 280 range than 300.

  • connfyoozed .

Devin Smith was actually waived-injured, apparently, meaning that if no one claims him he would go to IR. So, if the Steelers decided to keep Smith around, they would not have to use a practice squad spot for him.

  • Craig M

But you have to remember that we had numerous OL injuries that affected our run game and TOP, TP was hurt, we lacked or changed coaches at OC, STs, Tomlin’s clock management sucked, Miller was hurt, punting wasn’t a real plus- it distorts all our stats or assumptions. And the cuts/ player movements haven’t played out yet, lets wait another week and then I’ll probably be yelling w/ you- just saying.

  • connfyoozed .

I had hopes for Poole based on seeing him with Panthers in last year’s camp and with Tennessee Vols. He wasn’t healthy enough to show anything. I hear lots of good things from fans about Houston, though.

  • connfyoozed .

Tammie: from what I had read in previous weeks, Carter had been having a great camp, playing like someone who knows his job is on the line. If that’s the case, great: if it isn’t, I agree with you, find someone else.

  • connfyoozed .

He reminds me of Chidi Iwouma (remember him?). You might be in trouble if he has to play CB, but he does enough well on special teams to hang around anyways.

  • connfyoozed .

Agreed. Poole was with Saints in 2012 camp and Panthers in 2013 camp, looked good in both, but had misfortune of being on 2 rosters which were very deep at tailback.

  • connfyoozed .

Just a reminder, folks: So’oto has been cut by 5 other NFL teams before Pittsburgh; Dangerfield was cut by Buffalo last year and I don’t think ever appeared on a practice squad during the year. They were both interesting players, but they are just 2 examples of guys who might have looked like world-beaters in short spurts, but might not really have a future in the league. Every team’s fans are scratching their heads about some cuts right now.

  • Michael Parker

The So’to cut is troubling to me. Carter should of been the courtesy cut. He’s terrible, the worst 3-4 OLB in Steeler history. He cant get to the qb and he’s walked all over the field in the run game. Smh

  • blackandgoldBullion

I agree for the most part, but then I would have been in full rebuild mode last year. Carter again? SMH.

  • GoSteelerz

Perhaps we agree more than we disagree, because I was in favor of holding on to Harrison and Worilds. The difference is that those guys showed improvement whereas Carter has been given multiple opportunities and he hasn’t. The guys that I’m talking about may not be worthy of the roster or practice squad, but at least they should have enough chances to prove it either way. I noticed the same lack of improvement in Curtis Brown and it took them waaaay too long to let him go, but they finally did. Like you I usually defer to the opinion of the organization because they have 6 Lombardi trophies. It’s just that seeing the trend of how we’ve been struggling lately, I think one reason is how we’ve gotten in the habit of sticking with players we know, even when they aren’t up to par.

  • Jake Miller

I could easily see this happening. This almost locks Mauro onto the squad in my opinion. No other 6th DL has played ahead of him with any regularity.

  • http://www.facebook.com/STEELMANIAC STEEL MANIAC

I thought we would have kept Toler and So’oto, but this list looks pretty good to me.

  • joed32

I honestly did not notice Dangerfield while watching the games, what did he do to cause so many to think he would make the 53? I did notice Ventrone and thought he played pretty well and Shamarko was very good.

  • cencalsteeler

One thing that troubles me is how preseason is approached. Here we are in week 4, and historically Ben doesn’t play along with some other star players. I think it should be the opposite. Play these young unknown guys the first few weeks to evaluate talent. As we get into week 3, the starters come in and they start to see more time through the last preseason game. Week 4 should be a prerequisite and a warm up game to the regular season.
Weeks 1-2 scrubs, evaluate talent, make roster cuts
Weeks 3-4 infuse starters and tune up to roll in to week 1 of regular season. (should be firing on all cylinders and have rhythm heading into regular season).

  • Addison

Right and Mike Adams fails a drug test and lies in court, but that’s ok cause he’s a 2nd round pick and someone doesn’t want to look foolish. Swallow your pride already

  • GoSteelerz

It’s no secret that I liked Toler, his college highlight film (13 minutes of it!) was about the most impressive I’ve seen. I expected some growing pains on going up a couple levels to the pros, but I thought he was worth giving more reps and more game time to show whether or not he was worth the 53 or the practice squad. He made one of the best plays on a ball ANY of our DBs have made in the preseason, just didn’t come up with the pick. He made a couple bad plays but also was big on the coverage that forced two sacks. I thought he was worth more looks than a mere 18 defensive snaps. We already know a lot more about Green and many of our starters. Why Toler didn’t get more opportunities in practice as well as games I don’t know… And he’s not alone in that department this preseason…
