The Terrible Podcast – Talking Steelers Roster Cuts, Analytics, Tomlin Presser & More Episode

Season 5, Episode 10 of The Terrible Podcast is now up and David Todd and I start this show off by talking about the first round of roster cuts made Tuesday by the Pittsburgh Steelers. We go player by player and talk about why they were waived and it what it might mean for several other players still on the roster bubble heading into the preseason finale Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers.

After talking about the recent transactions, David and I move on to talk about several of the things that head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday during his press conference. This means that we discuss the comments that he made about punter Brad Wing in addition to wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey. We also discuss what Tomlin had to say about his use of football analytics and this turns into a good discussion about the work that Pro Football Focus and Football Outsiders both do.

Third-string quarterback Landry Jones will certainly be one player to watch closely Thursday night so we talk about his current status headed into that game along with several other players we will have a close eye on.

We also talk about the recent comments made by team president Art Rooney II concerning all of the defensive penalties being called during the preseason. Will these decline once the regular season starts?

As always, several other smaller talking points are mixed in throughout the show that are not highlighted here.

Thanks for listening and don’t forget to call or email with questions or comments and please pass us along to your friends!

A couple years ago there was a situation where Ben was out. Leftwich was starting and got hurt. We were down to our last QB.

I believe that situation made a deep impression on Tomlin. And he will not go into another season without 3 QBs. Especially because you can activate a 3rd QB on game day as a “freebee”.

I hate it. But Landry Jones IS making this team.

I would tend to agree but I think he has to show something tomorrow night to justify it.

    Thank you sir.

I think all of us (including myself) would LOVE to see Jones show some improvement. But there is a reason most QBs never make it in the NFL.

You have to throw extremely accurately and your brain has to process information very quickly. Sadly, I don’t see the slightest hint out of either of those in Jones.

The problem is our front office wanted to stick with Jones over Hoyer (I believe out of pride) and now we are stuck with no better options at QB for at least another year.

I think regardless of how bad Jones stinks it up tomorrow night, he’s on the 53. Unfortunately.

If he does, then it is a probably a big mistake. If they need 3qb’s, then it should be 2 retread veterans. We gain NOTHING by having young QB’s in waiting who can’t play. I’d rather have Charlie Batch back than know that my 3rd qb is Landry Jones…unless he SHOWS something for once.
