Steelers Name Roethlisberger, Polamalu, Golden, Suisham As 2014 Team Captains

The Pittsburgh Steelers have now named their team captains for the 2014 season and they include a few first-timers.

As expected, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is the offensive captain and it marks the sixth time that he’s had the honor bestowed on him.

On defense, safety Troy Polamalu will be a captain for the first time during his long career. Last season, safety Ryan Clark and defensive end Brett Keisel served as co-captains of the defense.

On special teams, third-year safety Robert Golden and kicker Shaun Suisham. Like Polamalu, it will be the first time that either have served a team in that capacity.

The Steelers will open their 2014 season this coming Sunday at Heinz Field against the Cleveland Browns.

Absolutely love that Troy’s the Defensive Captain

  • treeher

Probably in his final year too

  • Madi

True or not, that gets a downvote from me. 🙁

  • steeltown

Not so sure, he’s only 33yrs old, I could easily see him playing at 34yrs, guess we’ll see

  • Brian Miller

Maybe now that Suisham is a team captain and he has a new contract he can actually make a kick…

  • Pete Johnson

Robert Golden? Are you serious? Lord help us all. I mean the first person that comes to mind when I think of who is going to lead this team to the promised land, is a special teamer and probably 50’some guy on the roster. Not to mention Suisham, or Troy who obv wanted no part of it if this is the 1st time in what 10 years he is captain? Just shows the complete void of vet leadership and entrenched voices.

Way to go Troy!!! I’m a bit surprised at co-captains for special teams. I guess that means Golden won’t be getting cut anytime soon.

  • pat

Well aren’t you just all about the negatives every team has a special teams captain so please explain the problem with us having one

  • Steelers12328882

uhhh, you need a special teams player to be captain of special teams lol.

  • letownia

I am super psyched too. Call me an optimist but I think this will have a really good effect on our defense. The fact that he was shouting on the sidelines during the philly game (and made a pick), gets me really excited!!

i could agree or disagree with any of the choices but the team picked their guys as captains …its there locker room and they have a right to pick who they wanted with out a comment from me to be for or against who they picked….i just hope that they can come together as a team and build a strong bond ….it will be a long season so congrats to all the captains .

  • Madi

Golden’s one of our best special teamers. So is Suisham (minus this last preseason).

  • SfSteeler

yeah, baby…three cheers for a full 16 game season for Troy…

  • You must be clueless or you like to eat feet because your is in your mouth.

Each phase of the ball gets a captain. Ben for offense, Troy for defense, and Suisham and Golden for special teams. Each guy was voted for by his peers and all are good picks if you ask me.

  • Didn’t see all the other comments.

  • Steelers@2010

Man, your skin better be thick if you’re going to post a comment on here. LMAO! I will say this, it’s definitely a change; I just hope they start off better than what they have in previous years. If they accomplish that, I could care less who the Captains were. It could be Mean Joe, Terry Bradshaw and a few others from the 70’s. Mike Tomlin’s Crew always seem to start out of the gate slow.

I just hope that in the next few days the Steelers Brass comes to their collective senses and gets a better prospect for our third QB. The odds are against losing two QB s in one game, but as Steeler fans we have seen that before. It does happen. They have to see what we all do and Landry Jones should not even be in the NFL.

  • Louis Goetz

And why on earth would you use any level of intelligence to address that comment?

  • Slab

I think most Steeler’s fans will recognize who has a better feel for the Steelers- Pete Johnson or the actual team.
