The Terrible Podcast – Talking Steelers Defensive Problems, Possible Solutions, Stats & More Episode

terriblepodcast

Season 5, Episode 18 of The Terrible Podcast is now up and with David Todd currently unable to participate due to the passing of his father Monday morning, Alex Kozora joins me on short notice to talk more about the Pittsburgh Steelers 1-1 start following their Thursday night loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Alex and I talk more about what we saw in the game Thursday night with most of the discussion being about the Steelers defense. We throw some crazy stats at you and also tell you what we would do personnel-wise on defense moving forward.

The Steelers offense also gets a little bit of our attention and we discuss what the possible return of wide receiver Lance Moore to the lineup might mean. We also talk about the less-than-stellar game that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had against the Ravens.

We close out the show by taking a quick look ahead at the Carolina Panthers, who the Steelers will play Sunday night.

As always, several other smaller talking points are mixed in throughout the show that are not highlighted here. We ask that you please keep David and his family in your prayers.

Thanks for listening and don’t forget to call or email with questions or comments and please pass us along to your friends!

I completely agree Bryan.. LDE Heyward, McLendon, Keisel RDE should be your base line receiving the majority of the snaps, then when rotating Tuitt in at LDE you move Heyward over to RDE

  • Shea Fahr

I just got home and am currently listening to it…you ruined the ending HA. But I agree as well.

  • steeltown

Sorry, Bryan voiced what I’ve been thinking over the weekend regarding Tuitt (and Keisel) rotating in without taking snaps from Heyward.. and in turn relegating Cam Thomas to backup duty

  • Shea Fahr

I as well. Watching Cam Thomas the first 2 weeks has had me really scratching my head why they even brought him in. They expected Hood to go but I do not think they expected Woods to go. Too bad but at least Tuitt looks like he could be the real deal by year 2.5/3

    Hello Alex and Dave

Dave thanks for explaining how to defend the outside zone run . I also think that Keisel does a great job at defending the outside zone run . I see him working down the line laterally and he avoids getting turn by the offensive line men .
Justin Brown – I would throw him back into the fire and see how he responds against the panthers . J Brown needs SWAGGER . What do I mean by SWAGGER ? Confidence . J Brown needs to get over the drop pass in the Ravens game and rebound against the Panthers . I think teams are going to defend Antonio Brown and J brown could be another option for ben .

Lance Moore – I think he can contribute , if he stays healthy the rest of the season .
Martavis Bryant – He can contribute in the RED ZONE .

    Go Steeler’s

  • My condolences to David Todd. I knew when Dave Bryan opened up the pod cast, D. Todd’s family lost a cancer battle. Any time we loose someone its a sad day… I will keep your family in my thoughts.

Good discussion, but I can’t help but notice a contradiction. On one hand, you say there’s no need for change of DC or scheme but then you go through to explain why players are being used out of position/too much/not enough in obvious ways. Isn’t it up to the DC to know these things and use a scheme that fits the talent (or lack thereof) at his disposal?

It just sounds so pathetic that they won’t make changes but continue to push ahead.

  • Jacque Strappe

    Totally agree.

  • MC

I’ve never been one to jump on the coaches for any lack of production but i think i big part of the problems lie there.
After watching hard knocks and seeing how much the positional coaches have an impact on players, maybe these guys aren’t getting the right hands on coaching… i mean its evident on game day they have shown up unprepared many times as of late, i would think Tomlin is largely at fault there.
But then again, i don’t really know what it is, but i know a lot of these players on the roster have played better in the past, so why are they collectively screwin up now? I find myself looking at Tomlin for that…

  • Rick

    Sorry for your loss David.

  • Andrew Grigsby

So sorry for your loss David, your family is in my prayers.

Once the game slows down for Shazier, look out!

  • SfSteeler

    all my best dave…

  • Tammie Sherrell Hill

Same thing I was trying to get across in another post I also would get Spence more snaps if shazier continues to struggle getting off blocks and have shamarko play more if Mitchell keeps missing tackles and last but not least it can’t hurt to get mccullers a helmet just in case our dl continues to get manhandled

  • steeltown

Agreed. I’d rather have McCullers dress than BW Webb at this point, considering all of our DBs are healthy

  • Craig M

Looking at extremes for better perception. If you were to eliminate your RB and load up on WRs you’ll have open receivers but your QB will be looking straight up at the sky from no blocking. If you have one receiver and everyone one else blocking you’ll have a QB waiting all day for the receiver to get open, typical Mexican stand-off. If you have two backs w/ good hands, Dbl. TE set, both w. good hands and a WR you have five receivers whom all can block. The Off. scheme we used w/ the Ravens may just as well been the old Off. scheme we switched from that put Ben in so much danger. If our OC came up w/ that he should not go drinking the night before the game, if Ben had a lot to do w/ that he should maybe leave his designs at home, Me I tend to think it was Tomlin at the design control and I think it was dismal, unimaginative, narrow minded and seemed to leave little to development in case of failure. Just my thoughts and it sure is neat sitting here judging others but that’s part of being a fan.
