Report: Steelers To Hold Regular Practice Friday Instead Of Walkthrough

Being as the Pittsburgh Steelers will play the Baltimore Ravens Saturday night, one could easily speculate that Friday’s practice would be a walkthrough. However, that won’t be the case according to Aditi Kinkhabwala of the NFL Network.

At the conclusion of Thursdays practice, Steelers safety Mike Mitchell told Kinkhabwala that Friday’s practice wouldn’t be a walkthrough. When she acted surprised with his answer, veteran cornerback William Gay yelled the reason why the team would have a regular practice Friday instead.

“It’s Ravens week,” Gay said.

It’s unknown if the Ravens will practice fully Friday as they might just choose to hold a morning walkthrough prior to them flying to Pittsburgh. Will the extra day of practice give the Steelers an advantage? We’ll see.

The weather is supposed to be nasty Saturday night as forecast are currently calling for it to be rainy and cold during the game.

The Steelers are likely to be without the services of starting running back Le’Veon Bell for the game Saturday night and yet they’re still favored by three points over the Ravens.

Whatever help them win the game on Saturday night I’m in for it, like they said practice makes perfect.

  • steelmann58

    totally agree

  • Shooter McGavin

    Practice makes perfect.

Obviously this decision is about much more than just one player (as I assume specific offensive plays and defensive schemes—perhaps even tricks plays?—will be smoothed out in preparation for Baltimore), but I can’t help but think Friday’s session is also one more opportunity for Bell to practice if he’s up to it.

I think the likelihood of him suiting up is only maybe 25-30%, but if reports are correct that he’s feeling good and giving his knee the right mix of rest and conditioning up to this point in the week, he may want to see what a full practice feels like. A Friday practice certainly falls under Tomlin “leaving the light on” for Bell.

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s Ravens week.

  • michaelinchains

I expect to see Leveon used as a decoy Sat. Pitts big uglys playin there best ball recently,i see Ben carving up the 2ndary

  • Steelers12328882

Actually the rain is going to bring some warmth with it. Should be mid 40’s by game time.

  • cp72

I see what your saying, but I wouldn’t have anymore than a walk through. It’s late in the season and everyone is probably a little dinged up. You also habe a greater risk for a freak injury.

  • turtlefart1

Good decision imo. Keep the guys on their toes. The veterans who need rest will surely get it throughout the week. As they should say….PERFECT practice makes perfect.

  • 2winz

I’ve been saying that I’ve been expecting more wide receiver end-arounds and gadget plays this game.

  • SteveM2

More practice is what separates Antonio Brown from his peers; it couldn’t hurt anyone else, either. GO, STEELERS!

  • Lil Smitty

At this point in the season, I don’t think they hold full contact practices or tackle. Hopefully, no one will twist a knee. I think getting the RBs enough practice with the first stringers is critical.

  • Jones

I hope Tuitt and Worilds practice their Upshaw impression to show Flacco.

  • ND_Steel

I’m still ticked the NFL stuck it to our #3 seeded Steelers. First moving them to the flex game on Sunday night for ratings, giving us less time to prep compared to all other playoff teams. Then not getting rewarded for winning the three seed with a Sunday game. Instead, we are on a short week trying to squeeze in one more practice. I hope not, but I see us wearing down as the game goes on.

  • Josh Gustad

Keeping the intensity high all week. I like it as long as there isn’t any injuries. Get Harris some extra reps. I fully expect for Leveon to sit this week and hopefully he has something to return to next week. I don’t know about you all but I’m ready for WWIII.

  • ApexSteel

Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but that doesn’t sound good. It sounds like they had a bad couple of days of practice.

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

I’m thinking more of it’s the playoffs and this team have a lot of new faces and like gay said its ravens week

  • steeltown

Exactly, in fact the amount of ‘full contact’ padded practices in a season is ridiculously low thanks to the new CBA. It’s not even one a week I think now. I am all for extra practice considering Harris, Archer and Tate could all be seeing some playing time

  • steeltown

Maybe, or they want all of the practice time they can get with Harris and Tate

  • StrengthOfVictory

Disagree. I think it’s more to do with preparing on another level. Sure, there are also moving parts like Harris and Tate that you want to be sure have all the reps they can get, but playoffs is the time to pull out all the stops. Have trick plays in your back pocket…coverage schemes…blitz packages…anything and everything you might want/need.

The Steelers don’t want this to be their last game of the season, so they have to prepare as though this is their last shot. Because in single elimination, it is. Every time.

  • Steelers@2010

It can only help, it looks like Bell will not be able to go. So, it looks as though Josh Harris and Dri Archer will be used tomorrow night. I just heard on ESPN that Tomlin will split carries between Troy and Allen. Say it isn’t so! Please! You know, if Tomlin starts Troy it will completely be out of respect. The past two weeks their secondary has really build some good chemistry. Imagine if those two CB’s that have been starting as of late were 2″ taller? Troy is a future Hall of Famer, it has been a pleasure watching him and Ike. However, this is the playoffs! Lose and you’re done.

  • pittfan

this being ravens week notwithstanding, harris and dri and even tate needs reps badly. hopefully they put in some hitting too, these guys are gonna get banged on, they need to get acclimated
