Steelers T Alejandro Villanueva Excused From Rookie Minicamp

If you are like me, you were hoping to hear some positive news this weekend about Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Alejandro Villanueva during the annual rookie minicamp, but according to reports, the former Army captain was excused for the session so that he could get married.

Villanueva, who was signed last year to the Steelers practice squad after he was released by the Philadelphia Eagles during their final round of roster cuts, spent the entire 2014 season on the team’s practice squad. He made the move to the offensive side of the football with the Steelers after playing defensive end with the Eagles.

Being as Villanueva isn’t taking part in the rookie minicamp, that means we’re unlikely to hear about his progress until the team reconvenes in a few more weeks for their first of three OTA sessions.

Villanueva, who is already 26-years-old, will likely be given the opportunity to win the backup swing tackle during the offseason. That will mean that he’ll likely have to beat out fellow tackle Mike Adams, who was drafted in the second-round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. In his first three season with the Steelers, Adams has played 1372 snaps and has made 20 starts.

Damn you, Alejandro. Get your priorities straight, lol!!

Why would he organise his wedding around the start of OTAs? There may be a number of reasons why he needed to do it now, but without knowing more it seems like an odd decision for a guy trying to fight his way in

Maybe his wife wanted to marry on May. Girls like crazy stuff and you cant say no to a girl. lol

  • The Notorious TOM

Maybe the date has significance to him or his wife or something. Or maybe that’s the only time they could book a specific venue.

”Are you saying that your sportsball is more important than our *LOVE*??! You are unbelievable!!!”

    ”B-but… I…”

Not to be a jerk, but I’m a little annoyed by this. It’s not like the rookie mini camp hasn’t been scheduled for months. And it’s not like he doesn’t need the work. Does he want to be on this team or not? He can blow his money on a wedding another time.

  • Nwall2

Let the guy do what he wants. Yes he’s only hurting himself and his chances to make the team, but it’s his decision. I also think a veteran can get married whenever the hell he wants.

  • NinjaMountie

Okay, I think people might be looking at this a little wrong. This guy isn’t an idiot. He’s a rather intelligent individual that understands how things work.
Maybe…just maybe…he felt confident enough to schedule a wedding during the workouts. I’m certain this has been known for a while, and I’m sure as a military man, he ran it by the staff first. Maybe…just maybe he was told his place on the team is a little more solid than some think it is.

He fought in Afghanistan, he can do whatever he damn well pleases, lol.

The bride always controls the wedding stuff…Most men are just along for the ride…

  • HiVul

Blow his money on a wedding? Really?

  • gdeuce

    blow his money?

  • Smashmouth

Well it’s not the end of the world and i wish him and his new bride well . i honestly think he will move into adam’s slot this year anyway

There’s an article on the Steelers website about LT Walton that Dave just tweeted. In it it says that Chickillo really wanted to be there for the open of camp but Coach Mike talked him into attending his graduation instead because it would mean so much to him. Coach’s probably had a similar talk with Alejandro concerning his wedding.

I gotta say, there are some silly comments on this thread. You usually have to book many wedding venues a year in advance. Last year at this time he had no idea what he would be doing now. In fact, last year the draft was happening on this weekend so they probably thought this would be early enough to avoid conflict with any NFL activities he might have, if was even on a roster.
Besides, this is basically rookie orientation, and he already knows the staff and the facility. Voluntary OTA’s don’t even start for another week or two. Let the man get married. This is a non-story folks.

I loved this guy when he first tried out with the Eagles. Glad Steelers gave him a chance to learn grow and get better he is awesome human being and a true credit to this country. Hope to see him in regular season on field play soon.

No way he beats out Mike Adams anyway.
