While several members of the Pittsburgh Steelers front office and coaching staff were in Texas Wednesday observing Baylor’s pro day, tight end coach James Daniel was present and accounted for at the Virginia Tech pro day.
According to Andy Bitter of the Roanoke Times, Daniel spent some time Wednesday with Virginia Tech tight end Ryan Malleck, who caught 62 total passes for 658 yards and 4 touchdowns during his college career.
“That’d be awesome,” said Malleck when asked about the Steelers potentially looking for another tight end now that veteran Heath Miller has retired. “I really like the way he [Miller] played the game the last 11 years. I think my game is similar to his and his style, being able to run block and catch the ball down the field.”
Malleck, who measured in at the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine at 6044, 247-pounds, chose not to tun while in Indianapolis. He did, however, register a 34.5-inch vertical jump and a 10’1″ broad jump at the combine in addition to doing 18 reps on the bench.
Malleck is considered a late-round draft prospect this year in a very top-heavy tight end draft class. He could very well wind up going undrafted.
Edge-rusher Dadi Nicolas and cornerback Kendall Fuller were the big draws Wednesday at the Virginia Tech pro day but as of right now there are no reports of any other members of the Steelers coaching staff being in attendance to observe or talk to either one of those players. Fuller, by the way, was unable to workout on Wednesday as he’s still recovering from a knee surgery that cost him most of the 2015 season.
