The Terrible Podcast – Talking Steelers Complete Draft Recap, Gradkowski Re-signing & More

Season 6, Episode 108 of The Terrible Podcast is now up and in this Monday show, David Todd and I spend a lot of time recapping the Pittsburgh Steelers 2016 draft in addition to talking about several of the undrafted free agents that they signed Saturday night.

In addition to talking about the new Steelers players, David and I also discuss the team’s recent decision to re-sign veteran quarterback Bruce Gradkowski. This leads to us discussing whether or not Gradkowski will eventually wind up beating out Landry Jones for the No. 2 spot behind starter Ben Roethlisberger.

The Steelers need to make a decision on outside linebacker Jarvis Jones on Monday as it relates to picking up his fifth-year option so David and I discuss that topic one last time as well. We also discuss whether or not Jones should be considered a bust at this point and how he ranks as far as other first round selections go during the last 15 years.

As always, several other smaller talking points are mixed in throughout the show that are not highlighted here in this post.

Love the podcast. But I have to respectfully disagree on Artie Burns 2016 playing time.

You guys act like he’s barely going to see the field this year, and I just think that is extremely pessimistic.

Tomlin did not draft him in the 1st round (reaching a little at that) to sit him on the bench. Raw or not, he is going play. Bud Dupree was just as raw as Burns (zero pass rush moves) and he played a ton his rookie year.

The first half of the season, the Steelers will rotate Artie Burns in on 4-5 WR sets. Somewhere during the 2nd half of the season he will overtake Ross Cockrell on the depth chart. And by playoff time, our 3 starting CB’s will be: Gay + Golson + Burns.

    Just my opinion.

Great Podcast but i’m not sure I agree with you about Artie Burns playing time.

After Gay and Cockrell who else does he have to beat to be the 3rd corner or spell one of them? Golson has never played an NFL snap and Doran Grant couldn’t even make an NFL roster that literally had the worst cornerback in the NFL as one of its starters (Blake). On a team with a horrible secondary he doesn’t need a year or two to develop, he would be an upgrade now over Blake. Were gonna have 3 corners on the field about 60% of the time right? Unless I am forgetting another corner on our roster i’m just not sure how he does not contribute consistently throughout the season.

Burns will contribute much more than either of you think.

Dave & Dave What are your thoughts on having Dave T come back on the show and give a rundown on the Steelers’ draft picks and his thoughts on how they fit our system

  • jsteeler

Dave Te’ was on the Ike Taylor show (Triblive) on Tuesday. He had Burns ranked as the 5th best corner player # 58 overall on his board. Thought all the first 3 Steelers players were reaches. Overall gave them a C. but he thought the 7th rounder Matakevich was a steal. I think Colbert & Tomlin picks this year were to fill the needs of the 2016 scheme. Height, Speed and the ability to bump & cover man to man and tackle the catch was the most important aspects of those drafted. Hargraves, mostly for penetration and stopping the draw on 3rd downs. All drafted this 2016 will probably be on Special teams except Hargraves (DT/DE) and Hawkins (OT). Spence, Blake, & Garvin will have to be replaced. Great podcast. We all have opinions. We will not know anything until a year or two or three from now. I still think if Mr burns can contribute more than Blake did last year it is a win. Robert golden did admirably last year and gives Sean Davis time to learn. Hargraves has to be better than Cam Thomas. Travis Feeney & Tyler Matakevich should be ST Aces and find their way on the field on Defense in special packages. I like the upgrades.
