No Sunday Waivers Claims Made By Steelers

The league has now processed waivers for Sunday and according to the official report the Pittsburgh Steelers did not claim a player.

While the Steelers didn’t claim a player off waivers on Sunday, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they didn’t at least try to as they could have been beaten out by another team who was higher in the order.

Below is a list of all the the players who were claimed off waivers on Sunday. As you can see, all of the Steelers players who were waived on Saturday went unclaimed.

The Steelers are now in the process of putting together their initial 10-man practice squad.

  • Michael Martin

Well, there are still a lot of options available out there. Kalan Reed, Alex Carter, or Charles Gaines would make me happy. Put Grant on PS if possible.

  • LucasY59

Wow, Alex Carter went unclaimed, hope they at least add him to the PS

  • toonasteel

Fenney just got signed to the PS per Jeremy Fowler. As expected. Interested as to see who else will comprise the PS

  • I’ve a question re how this works. I assume the Steelers couldn’t [or wouldn’t] claim multiple players at one position–in case their first choice[s] was awarded to another team]–lest they be awarded more than they needed or wanted…or does the league allow claims to be made contingent on whether the team is first awarded someone they prioritize at that position? If not–and say [for example] the Steelers tried to get Darryl roberts but failed–could they place a claim now on their next highest-rated CB and be awarded him immediately…or would the NFL award the player tomorrow based on any claims that might arrive today?

  • blackandgoldBullion

Corey Lemonier was cut and I am amazed as he did some good things. Wow. Still some talent out there.

  • connfyoozed .

The Ravens gave up on 2 higher draft picks from recent years, Arthur Brown and Terrence Brooks, and both got claimed.

  • Jonas

Eric Kush is the tanktop guy from Hard Knocks?

  • Maurice Bang

C.J. Goodwin made Atlanta’s 53 as a CB. What does this say about the Steelers ability, or more correctly their inability, to judge talent? A 6 foot 3 corner is rare. Carnel Lake let one slip through his fingers….

  • Michael Martin

Someone in the personnel decision making chain is a big time liability.

  • Michael Martin

I was a huge Goodwin fan. Even suggested that we try him as a CB on several occasions. He had top end SPARQ athleticism, was very raw and came with a recommendation from Mel Blount….Mel freaking Blount.

  • Jeff Papiernik

I think Gaines can play the slot

  • Matt Manzo

Cleveland got Boddy-Calhoun. Wasn’t he Eric Murrays CB partner?

And I think Arthur Brown will do better in Jacksonvilles D.

  • Michael Martin

Me too! I actually had him at the top of my mid-round CB wish list in that years draft. Him and Steven Nelson. I wouldn’t mind a bigger more physical guy either if they were made to get in the WR’s face and jack him up in the first five yards. Just sick of Zone guys that can’t tackle playing ten yards off the line.

  • John Noh

Have to think this is why the Steelers chose to trade for Gilbert instead of fighting the long odds of singing him off the waivers, given their low position.

  • Jeff Papiernik

He wasn’t added to the practice squad though

  • Jaybird

Absolutely. He never would have gotten to us.

  • Michael Martin

Gaines? No. The Browns are cleaning house again. Their trash FO/wnership is insisting the players are the problem again.

  • dennisdoubleday

Let’s see him actually do something before we get all up in arms.

  • Michael Martin

We should be able to place Golson on IR and make some kind of roster move very soon. Grant, Reed, Gaines…Carter?

  • Michael Conrad

Steelers could start a defense with 7 first round picks and 3 second rounders and a third in Hargrave.

  • Jaybird

I honestly believe this team is going to be a mini dynasty – 2 superbowls in the next 2-4 years.

  • Jaybird

Let’s see how CJ plays first before we blame Lake. CJ may wind being the worst corner in the league. Or the Falcons secondary may be so bad that he made the roster that way.

  • Michael Martin

lol, dupree to IR and steven johnson gets his spot.

  • Michael Martin

He was brought in as a WR for us, so we can’t really blame Lake or anyone but we can squint suspiciously and shake our heads in disgust while thinking about Hojo and Mauro.

  • John Noh

Fudge. Is he qualified to return this year? That must have been a nasty groin injury.

  • Jaybird

Think positive – look at the other two guys they DID convert- AV from DE to Left tackle, and Rosie Nix from LB to fullback.

  • dennisdoubleday

He is qualified. Can’t return both Golson and Dupree, though, so Golson is probably missing the year AGAIN.

  • Michael Martin

We better trade one of those ILB’s…For a CB, a LT or a TE.

  • Jaybird

Even though I knew you were joking , I still went and Googled Bud Dupree to see if he was put on IR! Wheww!

  • Michael Martin

    It isn’t a joke.

  • John Noh

Yes, I always thought the talk of possibly coming back in November was a lot of hooey.

  • Jaybird

When I first heard the name I thought it was Phillip Gaines from Rice. Another tall lanky speed outside guy. I couldn’t figure out why everyone wanted him after we got Gilbert? I gotta be honest I know nothing about Charles though.

  • Jaybird

    I ain’t googling it again.

  • Jaybird

Holly sh*t he is on IR ! Holly sh*t

  • steelmann58

    disater news for the steelers

  • Maurice Bang

That’s fair…my point is that the Black & Gold didn’t see a CB in him and then he makes an NFL roster, while many CB’s they draft (Dorin Grant for example) never make a roster….

  • StarSpangledSteeler

You beat me to it. Lemonier might be a good addition with Dupree down.

  • Redmond Barry

I kinda wonder, since they’re putting Dupree on IR-DFR, why didn’t they place Golson on the PUP list along with Green and clear an extra roster spot?

  • Dustin Chaussard

I dont really like the idea but I think they might try n carry him on the roster eventhough he is injured and have him dress when healthy.

  • Denny

Can only go on PUP before training camp starts. After it starts, PUP no longer an option.

  • Redmond Barry

    Damn… would’ve been a good option there.

  • LucasY59

Mel Blount didnt see a CB in him, and he was the one who vouched for him as a WR

  • LucasY59

still think its crazy Blount didnt pick up that he could play CB, I trusted his input on a WR because I would think a CB of his caliber would recognize a good WR, but to not see the CB potential in him? (and both were/are similarly (rare) sized CBs as well…)

  • LucasY59

    too bad Clowns claimed him

  • LucasY59

I think they could put a claim on all players, and then dependent on who is actually available based on claim position they could choose to sign the player (and with your hypothetical if two players they wanted both cleared up to them they could choose the one they prefer between the two and then let the other go on though the rest of the waiver process) the real trick is since they are so far back in the waiver rankings they have no clue who will make it to their claim (most of the players they mightve actually wanted didnt make it that far)

  • Michael Martin

I don’t know. There were a lot of fans that suggested he get a shot at CB because he was sooo raw and matched Mel Blount for height and athleticism. I was one of them. He high pointed the ball sooo nicely in training camp that offseason. Even safety would have been worth a look.

Blount is from Atlanta, He probably put in a good word for the kid with the Falcons and the Falcons actually listened. I don’t have a lot of faith in our people that are making the decisions when it comes to our Corners. Haven’t been very impressed with them for a number of years and each year it just gets worse. We will see, I hope they turn it around and Burns and Gilbert don’t turn out being first round busts.

  • LucasY59

not that it matters (since they didnt make it to the Steelers spot to claim) I wouldve picked up

Corey Lemonier (or Tyrone Holmes) especially with Dupree being out at least half the season

Darryl Roberts (even with the trade for Gilbert I am not comfortable with the CB depth) they are holding out hope that Golson returns but I dont think he has enough experience to contribute if he does, and it will take a bit of time to get back to football shape after he heals as well, at best I would think he is late season depth that only gets used if someone gets hurt

Pierre Desir (I think he could be an interesting S/CB good length/size and as a Safety would have +Coverage skills (-Coverage for a CB) but with subpackages a guy like him could be useful, I like Dangerfield for his attitude, work ethic, and ST contribution, but dont think he should play on D, so I wouldve bumped him to PS if they couldve claimed Desir) Davis playing slot also makes me want one more S that can play on D, Thomas might be able to? but like I said I dont think Dangerfield should

Alex Carter (the one guy they couldve had since he cleared all the way to the lions PS) Zach Sanchez also cleared to the Panthers PS and might be a better option since they need a slot guy, but I prefer Carter (looking at him pre draft he seemed like a perfect zone scheme CB for the Steelers) Charles Gaines is one more name and I believe he is still floating out there available (Montell Garner is as well…)

with Golson an automatic Inactive I think they need one more CB/DB (with nickel skills would be a plus, but Gay might move inside now that they have Gilbert/Burns) S.Johnson getting brought back after Dupree went to IR was a head scratcher, OLB or CB seem like much bigger priorities than a 6th ILB)

PS correct answer to one of the friday night 5 ?s = 33 (I said “about 30 (one per team) maybe a few less” guess I shouldve said a few more…)

  • Rocksolid20

Get rid of Golson , can’t last two consecutive practices

  • LucasY59

one more thing about Atlanta is that Dan Quinn really likes big CB/DBs (and probably knows what to look for to find the guys with size that can play in his system and how to develop them)

I wouldve loved for them to have been able to keep/find CJ as a CB (last yr having him instead of Blake wouldve been really nice) I think having a big guy that can match up with the freak WRs in the league would be an asset (even if its just one guy that doesnt fit the scheme) having some versatility is good (the last few yrs it was rare to have a CB that was 6′, most were 5’9″)

Goodwin is only 190lbs so I dont think he could be a Safety, but think him being able to high point would be useful for sure (again my point about having one guy that can match up with the big WRs outside or in the RZ)

I really hope the team can finally turn around the CB situation, and Burns/Gilbert give them as much physical gifts as they could ask for on the outside, both have great speed/length for the position, so I am cautiously optimistic, there is definitely potential (the problem is they have technique issues that need to be improved and are both inexperienced/unproven, with the teams recent track record of developing CBs I am not as confident as I would like to be)

  • Michael Martin

They without a doubt have technique issues. I am with you 100% about wanting some bigger more physical corners. Sometimes it is good to just jack up the WR and QB’s timing early on in the play. That can throw the route off just enough for the pass rush to get home or make the QB do something foolish. Glad we have moved on from our Lollipop guild of 5 guys under 5′ 10″. That said, Burns, Gilbert and Cockrell are all pretty soft in that first five yards. I am definitely not as confident as I would like to feel regarding our secondary, but I do have a little bit of hope for these guys because our front seven has the potential to be a serious force and that can help our non tackling secondary out a LOT.

  • Maurice Bang

I don’t think Mel watched him work every day in practice, either, so he really wasn’t in a position to project Goodwin to another position. Again, my point is the Steelers seem have trouble identifying CB talent. I am frustrated that CB play has been the weak link on defense for years and desperately want them to turn it around….
