Steelers Open As 5.5-Point Road Favorites Over Eagles

Even though it won’t be considered a marquee matchup Monday night, the game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Chicago Bears will certainly be one that fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers might just want to tune in for.

The Eagles will host the Steelers next Sunday and even though Philadelphia has yet to play their Week 2 game, Pittsburgh opened as a 5.5-point road favorite.

Eagles rookie quarterback Carson Wentz will make his second career start Monday night against the Bears. In his NFL debut win in Week 1 over the Cleveland Browns, Wentz completed 22 of 37 pass attempts in the game for 278 yards and 2 touchdowns. While he was sacked twice by the Browns defense in that game, he didn’t throw an interception.

It will be interesting to see how Wentz fares Monday night against the Bears, who lost their 2016 regular season opener to the Houston Texans. In that game the Bears defense allowed Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler to complete 22 of his 35 pass attempts for 231 yards and 2 touchdowns while intercepting him just once.

in case you’re curious, it looks like the Monday night game will start with the Bears being favored by 3-points at home over the Eagles.

Are you ready for some more Week 2 football? I know I am as I look forward to seeing how the Eagles and Wentz play Monday night in Chicago.

  • Jaybird

Rookie quarterback on a short week – the Steelers better pound the Eagles this week. This is the week we get some sacks and turnovers.

  • PaeperCup

Helps that we didn’t come out of that Bengals game beat to heck.

  • Jason

Odd that they put out a line prior to the Eagles game tonight. 5.5 sounds about right.

  • Nunya

Is anyone watching this young gun slinger from the Eagles? Man, he is very impressive. He looks like vintage Kurt Warner with the placement of his passes and calmness under pressure.

  • Michael Martin

Wentz is looking pretty good for a Rook. I see why the Browns passed on him. Would have been a shame to feed him through the Factory of Sadness’ ol’ QB Grinder.

  • Michael Martin

Think he is a little tougher on the move.

  • Michael Martin

It is very early though to make any decent judgments.

  • Nunya

No it’s not. I said he looks like Kurt and he absolutely has today so far and actually did last week as well. Whether he remains consistent remains to be seen. But, we play him next week so I’m just concerned with right now. And right now, he looks a helluva lot better than what we have played so far.

  • Nunya

    True.

  • Michael Martin

Yep. That is why I am watching too. He looks real good, especially when staring down an impending sack/hit.

  • Michael Martin

My other concern is the tradition we have of losing in Philly. Not sure LeBeau’s ability to unnerve and confuse Rooks applies to Butler and Wentz but I hope it will translate. So far though, Kid doesn’t look easy to shake up or like he has much fear at all. Guess we can hope for confusing him. I am going to judge our pass rush against what I am seeing from the Bears tonight.

  • Michael Martin

Charlie Whitehurst volunteering at the Factory of Sadness.

  • Thomas

Even though we are 0-8 @ PHI, I have a strong feeling this will be a blowout. Like, 30-6 blowout. Ben and Brown are going to play lights out after a mediocre game in bad weather, and our second string D shut down their O in preseason. I have faith.

  • Thomas

He is impressive but his OL is not doing him favors. Heyward, Tuitt, McCullers, and Hargrave are going to eat him alive.

  • Thomas

I still say that they should either bring back Manzeil in a blaze of glory or bring Vick to the Dawg Pound. lol.

  • Michael Martin

Jacoby Glenn is mugging the bears WR’s. Looking like 70’s rules in Chicago tonight.

  • Michael Martin

Those four will never see the field at the same time. Unfortunately.

  • Michael Martin

Fearless. Honestly, it might be a flaw in his game. His QB coach needs to talk to him about running like that.

  • Xclewsive

AB and Big Ben should redeem himself this week.

  • Shane Mitchell

Looks more like a young Ben to me than Warner.

  • Steel Your Face

Wentz hasn’t thrown a bad ball all night. Sure be pissed of they don’t game plan for him this week. Dave y Dave best recognize!

  • Mister Wirez

Bonus… Philly kicker looks like he just pulled a hammy on x-pt.

Edit: now he just missed an x-pt on this one.

  • Michael Martin

The Destroyer!! Gonna take crybabies job right now.

  • Mister Wirez

Lol.. yep browns only take the bad ones.

  • Shane Mitchell

That line is going to shrink in a hurry, Eagles defense can get quick pressure and cause turnovers, and Wentz doesnt play like a rookie QB at all.

  • Michael Martin

    Nevermind…lol Langford blew it.

  • Michael Martin

Yep, wrong to use talented QB to fuel the dumpster fire.

  • Michael Martin

Jesus, the grim reaper just killed the Bears season. They pretty much lost their whole secondary and now Eddie Goldman.

  • jsteeler

Eagles-29 Bears- 14 The Rookie Carson Wentz look good. No interceptions or Turnovers. Phily is 2-0 Wentz ran the no huddle with ease. 17-36 for 184 yds 1 TD. Sproles did what he does. Spread option reads, catching out of the backfield etc. and Back up T.E. Celek took over for Ertz and they didn’t miss a beat. Jordan Matthews, Eagles WR’s dropped a TD pass but the group together were serviceable. The Eagles Defense looked good. Knocked Cutler out of the game after and almost pick 6 and then back up Brian Hoyer came in and played like a back up. This should be an awesome game.

  • T3xassteelers

We are seriously 0-8 in Philly…..???

  • Steve Johnson

This will not be an easy victory. Somebody forgot to tell Wentz he’s a Rookie QB. The toughest test yet for the Steelers young secondary. The Eagles O/C is locking his chops.

  • Jon Crissinger

    One can hope

  • Jim Schwartz always brings a good defense.

  • Mrs Bighead

Time to put these Pigeons in their place

  • Mrs Bighead

Yep. He’s played Cleveland and the Bears…two sorry teams

  • MC

Gotta have Shazier shut down Celek and make sure Sproles and Matthews don’t do too much damage coming out of the backfield, especially on screens.

  • NinjaMountie

We have some bad matchups this week. I’m worried about this game. Wentz looks to be the real deal. He’s also pretty darn mobile and can hurt us running. I’m not overly confident in our chances but believe we can beat this team if we correct some deficiencies we’ve displayed this season.

  • NinjaMountie

21 of 34 for 190yds and 1TD with 0ints. Don’t want to ding his completion percentage that much…he’s done great for a rookie. 🙂

  • Paddy

    Haven’t won there since Oct 24 1965.

  • dhorst88

I am expecting Philly to throw at ease. I think Cousins is only average and the rain played a bigger role than most of the media is telling. Therefore, our defense gave the illusion of being better than they are. I am concerned for this game because the highlights of Wentz’s throws look a lot like what Dalton did in garbage time…dink and dunk with a few medium length throws peppered in.

I think we still win, but not buying a blowout. 31-24

  • David Paul

Wentz checking all the boxes in his first two games, but they’re keeping things safe for him. 6.6 YPA is way off of what Ben did as a rookie, but otherwise he has a running game and defense and has yet to play from behind. That should change Sunday. Offense needs to click early and often to put them in comeback mode.

  • David Paul

Kurt Warner didn’t average 6.6 YPA and didn’t play every game against teams that will be fighting for the 1st overall draft pick next Spring.

Let’s see how he looks when he isn’t playing with a lead.

  • David Paul

Really? The Bengals allowed 7 sacks a week before we got 1, because Dalton’s scramble ended at the line of scrimmage. The Steelers’ pass rush is non-existent right now.

  • PompeyGoat

Line’s down to 4 (at least here in the UK), what’s the weather forecast? Think that really cramped Ben’s style last week, if it’s fine I fancy us to cover any sensible line.

  • David Paul

Ben averaged 8.9 YPA as a rookie. So far, Carson averages 6.6.

  • David Paul

We have one player from the last time we played there in 2008, and he’s the best quarterback in the league now.

  • David Paul

They’re played two abysmal secondaries and defenses and he’s completing 60% with 6.6 YPA. Too early to anoint the kie – things are going to get a lot harder.

  • David Paul

Uh, no – in fact this will be the easiest test for the Steelers’ secondary. The Eagles don’t have weapons to compare to Washington and Cincinnati.

Steelers just beat two division winners, Eagles just beat two teams that will pick in the top 5 in the draft.

  • David Paul

This is the first time in the history of this site that anyone has fancied anything.

    Cheerio, guv’ner!

  • Bradys_Dad

    Brilliant !

  • The Tony

No we didn’t get enough sacks but Dalton was beat to hell against the steelers Sunday.

  • NinjaMountie

I wasn’t intending to anoint him, which is why I used the phrase “…for a rookie.”
That being said, I’m not worried about them because of their personnel as much as their scheme. Did you see how well he distributed the ball around? I wouldn’t write this game in the win column yet. We have played two previous Div winners…and gave up oodles of yards in the process. Philly has a chance to be a solid team. Don’t overlook them.

  • H.K. northern cali

Game will be alot harder than people think.

  • David Paul

Not overlooking them, just think Wentz played two perfect teams to ease into the NFL. Things get much tougher on Sunday. Ben and AB won’t have a 2nd bad game in a row, and if the Steelers get up big I expect Wentz to struggle.

  • NYCSteelCurtain

Not too worried about the RBs, we’ll take care of that. Sproles maybe out of the backfield but doesn’t seem like Wentz is using them too much. More of slants and come-back routes.

  • NYCSteelCurtain

100% agree, a lot more afraid of Cincy and Washington.

  • Jeff Papiernik

Steelers own rookie QBs. Just go ask RG3.

  • Scott N.

If they make through this game without multiple sacks against Ben I will be impressed. They usually have a hard time with the Eagles Dline.

  • Scott N.

Agreed. I wish they would mix it up and put them all on the field just to mix it up and see what they can do.

  • T3xassteelers

    Just saw that.. that’s insane!!!!

  • Nunya

Young Ben could move and hit targets but he didn’t hit them in stride this young. It’s early but this kid is one of the best rookie QBs I have seen in a long time.
